General Guidance
Keep in mind this is a Heritage Essay, not a history paper. Ensure the topic requested can be expounded to cover the evolution of that topic. I will screen and provide information on approval or disapproval. Students will choose a current policy, process, procedure, custom, event, equipment, ship, etc., and write an essay on the background, evolution, and importance of the topic to military heritage. It may not be a topic the student
previously researched, published, or presented. Many students think this essay is a history paper. That is incorrect. This assignment is designed for you to select a
topic, state the factual accounts surrounding the origins of the topic, and explain how the subject has evolved to become a part of current operations. Consider using the below guidance to develop the three main points for this paper:
Main Point 1 (Background) – State the factual account of the ship, station, battle, individual, custom, policy, process, procedure, or historical event surrounding the topic. This main point should cover all the information that a reader requires to increase awareness and establish a clear origin of the topic. Explain concepts, terms, theories, or ideas that may be unfamiliar and need an additional explanation for a clear foundation of understanding.
Main Point 2: (Evolution) – Explain how the topic has evolved. Changes, modifications, additions, process adjustments, program creations, or any progress that resulted from a specific event. Ensure to maintain a proper sequence of events/changes to effectively explain how the topic becomes a part of or impacts current operations.
Main Point 3: (Importance) – Explain why this topic is an important part of military heritage and current operations.
For example, the seat belts that we use today. The first seat belt was created in 1885, but the United States did not start the uproar for seatbelts until the 1930s. It was not until 1954 that car racing required seat belts. Testing, accidents, deaths, and studies conducted have resulted in what we have today as current safety/seat belts and laws. Started from something – explanation/evolutions – current operations.
