School Nurse Experience & Writing Activity

 

PURPOSE: School nursing is a specialized practice for practicing nurses that is essential in promoting and protecting students’ health. The purpose of this experience is to expose you to the many aspects of school nursing and to understand the roles and responsibilities school nurse’s entail. After completion of this assignment, you will have a better understanding of the importance of school nurses and some of the issues they may encounter throughout their profession.

 

OUTCOMES:

The student will:

• Understand the role and responsibilities of the school nurse.
• Learn the importance of vision, dental, and other screenings within the role of the school nurse.
• Identify common health conditions of the school-aged child including acute and chronic.
• Become familiar with medications commonly administered by the school nurse – this includes prescribed medications and as needed / emergent medications.
• Develop a general understanding of the special needs of students including psychosocial, behavioral, cultural, and economic issues.
• Understand the required documentation for student nurses and the components of student health records.
• Become familiar with the appropriate treatment of school-yard injuries and emergencies within the scope of practice of a school nurse.
• Understand the importance of educating students, parents and staff on health promotion and prevention in school-aged children.

 

Reflective Paper Writing Assignment

Use the following guidelines to ensure your submitted assignment includes all the required content and follows the 7^th edition APA formatting guidelines.

 

Content:

• Use online resources to research the role of a school nurse. What are some roles of the school nurse? What is the minimum degree required to be a school nurse? What is the average salary of a school nurse in your region?
• Choose an issue or topic that may interest you regarding school nursing. Discuss why the issue is important, how it impacts the students, and the nurse’s role in addressing your chosen issue/topic. Use at least 2 peer-reviewed references to support or expand your discussion on your chosen issue/topic. Using APA format, be sure to include in-text citations and references.
  • Issues/Topics may include but not limited to: Communication and language barriers, promoting healthy lifestyle habits, immunizations / vaccinations, allergies, school-yard injuries, hearing/vision screenings, managing student health records, etc.
• Lastly, reflect on any feelings or impressions you may have formed after researching the role of a school nurse. Is this something you may want to pursue in the future or is school nursing not for you?
