Assignment 1: The Sociological Viewpoint Toward Social Problems Presentation (Due Week 2)

Overview
One of the most crucial components to this course concerns addressing social problems in society from a sociological viewpoint as opposed to a strictly policy-oriented, psychological, or criminal justice viewpoint. Although many different viewpoints in social science are valid and have a lot of importance, it is equally important for us to understand how sociology looks at the nature of social problems in society today. This presentation will enable us to explore why certain social problems seem to be regarded as more significant than others. Our job will be in defining the sociological viewpoint, and choosing one social problem that we think is of high importance. We will build upon the topic we choose in this presentation for our second and third assignments.
Instructions
For this assignment, you will put together a presentation. It is suggested that you use Prezi as it is a great way to integrate text, images, and video in a moving, spatially organized format. Go to:  https://prezi.com/ and set up a new account (it is totally free).
Next, go to this page to view instructions on how to create a Prezi:   https://prezi.com/support/
You may also view some example Prezis here:   https://prezi.com/explore/staff-picks/
You may also use PowerPoint or use another program, such as Keynote, YouTube, etc.  Please attach, embed, or provide a link to your presentation to submit it for grading.
Your Presentation must do the following:
1)    Explain how the sociological approach toward social problems differs from other approaches. You must integrate the course text in your answer.
2)    Next, using one social problem that exists in society, explain how the sociological imagination allows us to connect a personal trouble with a societal problem.
3)    What might be one strategy that could help to reduce or eliminate this social problem?
4)    Define two concepts from our text that relate to your chosen social problem and analyze how these concepts help us better understand the social problem you are discussing.
5)    Define two sociological theories/perspectives from our text that relate to your chosen social problem and analyze how these theories help us better understand the social problem you are discussing.

Your presentation should utilize sound critical thought and it should include appropriate APA in-text citations and full APA references at the end.

The structure of the Presentation must include the following:
— TITLE SLIDE/SECTION,
— BODY OF PRESENTATION WITH SUBHEADINGS
— REFERENCE SLIDE/SECTION.

 Description
Description:
You are the crime analyst in a small to medium city. Your department is still using the pushpin type system of crime mapping. This is a very rudimentary style of mapping. In fact, one may have more than one crime in the same block on one day. The assignment will consist of two parts: a mapping assignment and a paper assignment. The assignments will be submitted as separate documents.
1. Mapping Assignment Portion
Download Weekend Crime Reports. You are to map each crime reported over the weekend in 2 separate Excel tabs. One map is to plot the time reported, and the other will map the specific crime.
Complete your 2 maps using the Plotting Map Template given below..
Download Plotting Map Template.
Mapping Guidelines

The crime plotting example shows the crimes.
When it asks for a cluster, you would look for a certain crime and decide if there is a cluster and in what section of the town it would be located.
When it pertains to suggestions to the chief for shifts, you do this by time.
The time plotting example shows the same crimes by shift.

Central Avenue splits the town into a north and south area. Although the West section of Central Avenue holds industrial buildings, it then travels east and has mostly businesses (shops, bars, and so on).
The northeast section of town is the downtown harbor area in which people of higher means are living.
The southeast section of town contains people of less than normal monetary means.
The northwest section of town is a median-income area but has gangs.
The southwest section of town has more of a residential feel.
The west section at Central Avenue holds industrial buildings.

Please add your file to the assignment submission section of the classroom.

Paper Assignment Portion

Your chief is asking for an analysis of the crime over the weekend. He has been receiving complaints from citizens that their area is not being covered to combat crime. He would like answers to the specific questions listed below. In a 2-page paper, answer the following questions:

Is there an excess of suspicious person reports in one area? If so, why do you think that may be happening?
Is there a lack of suspicious person reports in one area? If so, why do you think that may be happening?
Is there a certain time for burglaries? If so, why do you think that may be happening? Is there a cluster for the following:

Homicides
Burglaries
Robberies
Carjacking reports
Domestic reports
Home invasions
Driving under the influence

Are domestics related to one area? Why or why not?
The chief needs to allocate his officers to certain areas. At what day and time would he increase patrol car activity and in what area?
Give reasons to your chief as to why it would be advantageous to the department to have a computer-generated mapping system.

Modern portfolio theory (mpt) | Business & Finance homework help

EXERCISE 4Creating a hyperbola:One of the salient features of Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) is the phenomenon of putting twostocks together such that the resulting portfolio has a lower standard deviation (lower risk) thaneither of the component stocks. This is the magic of diversification and this exercise illustratesthe phenomenon graphically.1) Overview: Given the pps data of two firms* from your portfolio file of last week you will useExcel to create the hyperbola that would result from plotting the risk/return profile of a set of fiveportfolios, each comprised of the two stocks as the dollar mix goes from 100% of the dollars instock A and 0% in stock B, to 0% in Stock A and 100% in stock B.* Note: For Spring 2014, stock A= GE & stock B=GOOG.2) You will begin by generating data for these five portfolios. The data will be risk and return, where risk is the standard deviation (population) of the daily returns of the portfolio and returns isthe total annual (or 12 month) return.3) The dollar mix of the five portfolios that you plot will be:Portfolio 1: 100% stock A and 0% stock BPortfolio 2: 75% stock A and 25% stock BPortfolio 3: 50% stock A and 50% stock BPortfolio 4: 25% stock A and 75% stock BPortfolio 5: 0% stock A and 100% stock B
4) Start by creating 5 separate portfolios in a new sheet (or “tab”) [Rename the tab “hyperbola”]in your portfolio file with the two firms mentioned above (stockA and stockB). Each of the fivenew portfolios will have the three tiers (pps, mkt value, daily returns) and each portfolio will havethree columns (the total portfolio, stockA , stockB). There will be a total of 15 new columns.See also the screenshot called “hyperbola snapshot” available on the Moodle webpage.5) Populate tier1 of stock A and stock B with the original pps data found in sheet1. Do this fivetimes, that is, once for each of the five portfolios.6) Calculate the “normalized number of shares” for stockA and stockB using =10000/ averagepps . Enter “number of share” data for both stocks in each of the five portfolios such thatportfolio1 has 100% of the normalized number of shares for stockA and 0% of the normalizednumber of shares for stockB. Portfolio2 has a 75% and 25% mix, and so on for the other threeportfolios.7) Using the same logic and formulas as in the main sheet, calculate the Market Values (Tier2)and Daily Returns (Tier3) for all 5 portfolios in the hyperbola tab.8) Calculate the Standard Deviation (of the population using =STDEVP ) of the Daily Returns ofeach of the 5 portfolios. Put these in a row below tier 3.9) Calculate the Total Return (top to bottom of Tier2) for each of the 5 portfolios using (last dayfirst day)/first day. Put these in a row below the STDEVP.10) Build and new little block of data (see again “hyperbola snapshot”) in which you display thestd deviations and total returns of the five portfolios. For each of the cells you can simply
reference the appropriate cell above. For example, use “=B766” [I’m don’t the actual rownumber] to display “.01857” as calculated in a previous cell.11) Chart the stdevp and totalK of the 5 portfolios. Use “scatter with data points connected bysmooth lines”.12) Optional: Modify the two axis so as to exaggerate the curve. Chart Tools>Layout >Axis. That is, by moving the borders closer to the actual curve, the curve will become morepronounced.

Week 4 individual assignment groups, teams, and conflicts part i and

Individual Assignment: Groups, Teams, and Conflicts

Part I: Team Strategy Plan

You are part of a group of newly hired team superintendents with Riordan Manufacturing. Your group was hired to lead new teams and begin production of the newly designed CardiCare Valve heart valves. This will be at the organization’s Pontiac, MI, location that is currently manufacturing custom plastic parts. Many of the production employees are current employees from other divisions, and the company expects to hire some new employees.

Resources: Riordan Manufacturing Virtual Organization, and University of Phoenix Material: Team Strategy Plan

Review the Riordan Manufacturing intranet site and the Human Resource section under Demographics, Employees, Employee Files, and Reports.

Prepare a plan to create the teams. Address the following in your plan:

·         Identify various strategies available to build teams.

·         What challenges or barriers may happen?

·         How will the best strategy be determined?

·         What measures will you use to determine if the team is operating successfully

Part II: Conflict Management Plan

While developing the teams, the management group finds that there is currently some internal conflict among two of the employees chosen for this project. David Nguyen has spoken to his current manager twice regarding his feelings that James Deal is intentionally creating problems on the production line, which is causing David to miss his quality checks. James insists that he has no idea what David is referring to and does not understand why David is trying to cause problem. James now goes to his own superintendent because he feels David is spreading rumors that he is looking for other work. David advises his own manager that he is not sure why James thinks this because he has never said anything like that.

Before the new teams are formed, the management group knows they must resolve this issue so that the new production teams can operate smoothly. Both James and David are good employees with positive performance reviews, and they were chosen for the new project because of this reason.

Resources: Riordan Manufacturing Virtual Organization, and University of Phoenix Material: Conflict Management Plan

Create a Conflict Management Plan for the conflict between David and James. In this plan, include the following:

·         The various conflict management strategies

·         The strengths and weaknesses of each

·         Considerations for selecting a strategy

·         Alternate strategies

·         Possible challenges

Response to lincoln, matwyshyn, and harris

1. The Guardian’s Kevin Lincoln asks readers to consider the increasingly permeable boundaries between our devices and ourselves.  He begins with a thought experiment:
“…where do you end? Not your body, but you, the nebulous identity you think of as your “self”. Does it end at the limits of your physical form? Or does it include your voice, which can now be heard as far as outer space; your personal and behavioral data, which is spread out across the impossibly broad plane known as digital space; and your active online personas, which probably encompass dozens of different social media networks, text message conversations, and email exchanges?”
How do you respond to Lincoln’s provocation?  How do you understand your identity in an era of increasingly digital relations?  Where do the boundaries of your “self” begin and end?
2. Lincoln also makes the case that we each have a distinctly reciprocal relationship with our phones, involving an active give-and-take: these devices not only facilitate our access to the world, they also facilitate the world’s access to us.  Along those lines, he considers the power dynamics involved in such a relationship, especially when our “extended selves” are largely managed by what he calls the “big five” (Apple, Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, Meta (Facebook), and Amazon).  How does Lincoln, along with scholars like Moira Weigel, suggest we might limit the influence these companies have on individual consumers?
3. Andrea Matwshyn considers the evolving “platformization” of the body and its legal implications.   According to Matwyshyn, what is the “Internet of Bodies” (IoB) and why should we care about it?  What specific IoB applications stood out to you from this article?  Matwyshyn describes several legal challenges that the IoB raises.  Select one specific legal concern from this article and discuss.  What issue did you select and why?  (please note: You do not need to read the entire article.  Please focus on pages 77 – 129).
4. Harris describes a situation in which technology implanted in the body has obsolete and unsupported. While this is common for digital technologies, it take vastly more complex issues when they tech is implanted into a human body different. How do you think should be responsible for helping these customers? What regulatory policies do you think would need to be in place to make sure that it does not happen again?
Your response must be at least 350 words (total, all answers combined).  Please see the response guide here.

The sharp corporations projected | Business & Finance homework help

(Preparation of a cash budget) The Sharp Corporations projectedsales for the first eight months of 2011 are as follows:January $89,000 May $300,000February $120,500 June 269,000March $134,500 July 224,100April 240,900 August 150,500Of Sharp’s sales, 10 percent is for cash, another 60 percent is collected in the month following the sale, and 30 percent is collected in the second month following the sale. November and December sales for 2013 were $219,900 and $175,300 respectively. Sharpe purchases its raw materials two months in advance of its sales equal to 60 percent of their final sales price. The supplier is paid one month after it makes delivery. For example, purchases for April sales are made in February and payment is made in March. In addition, Sharp pays $10,000 per month for rent and $19,800 each month for other expenditures. Tax preparation of $21,600 are made each quarter, beginning in March. The company’s cash balance at December 31, 2013, was $21,500; a minimum balance of $15,000 must be maintained at all times. Assume that any short-term financing needed to maintain the cash balance is paid off in the month following the month of financing if sufficient funds are available. Interest on short-term loans (12 percent) is paid monthly. Borrowing to meet estimated monthly cash needs takes place at the beginning of the month. Thus, if in the month of April the firm expects to have a need for an additional $60,360, these funds would be borrowed at the beginning of April of April with interest of $604 (i.e., 12% x 1/12 x$62,080) owed for April being paid at the beginning of May.a. INestments Week 12
W12-Financial Advisor’s Investment Case
Vanessa Avoletta is a very successful self- employed freelance writer of romantic novels. She has a reputation for writing rapidly and is able to complete at least four books a year, which net after expenses $ 25,000 to $ 50,000 per book per year. With this much income, Avoletta is concerned with both sheltering income from taxes and planning for retirement. Currently she is 40 years old, is divorced, and has a child who is entering high school. Avoletta anticipates sending the child to a quality college to pursue a degree in computer sciences. While Avoletta is intelligent and well in-formed, she knows very little about finance and investments other than general background material she has used in her novels.
Since she does not plan to write prolifically into the indefinite future, she has decided to obtain your help in financial planning. At your first meeting, you suggested that Avoletta establish a tax- sheltered retirement plan and consider making a gift to her child, perhaps inthe form of future royalties from a book in progress. Both of these ideas intrigued Avoletta, who thought that funds were saved, invested to accumulate over time, and then transferred to heirs after death. While Avoletta wanted to pursue both ideas, she thought approaching one at a time made more sense and decided to work on the retirement plan first. She asked you for several alternative courses of action, and you offered the following possibilities.1. An IRA with a bank with the funds deposited in a variable- rate account.
2. A self- directed Keogh account with a major brokerage firm.
3. A Keogh account with a major mutual fund.
4. An account with a brokerage firm to accumulate common stocks with substantial growth potential but little current income.
Avoletta could not immediately grasp the implications of these alternatives and asked you to clarify several points:
1. What assets would be owned under each alternative?
2. What are the current and future tax obligations associated with each choice?
3. What amount of control would she have over the assets in the accounts?
4. How much personal supervision would be required?
How would you reply to each question? Which course( s) of action would you suggest that she pursue? Finally, how would each of the following alter your advice?
1. Avoletta has a record of poor health.
2. Avoletta would like to write less and perhaps teach creative writing at a local college.
3. Avoletta has expensive tastes and finds saving to be difficult.
