I found the FBA and BIP resources and slides extremely valuable. I enjoyed refreshing my mind about LRE and due process. The accommodations vs. modification information and 504 information was valuable too. This course applies directly to my role and I have learned new information. I have printed materials from this course and will refer to the slides as needed.An advocate is a voice for the student, parents and their needs. They are knowledgeable in the area they are advocating and give expert advice. Someone who participates with the team and helps meet student needs. Anyone on the IEP team can advocate for the student or perhaps I should say everyone on the IEP should advocate for the student.It is important to know the programs, contacts, and resources available through the district. One strategy is to visit programs around the district. Find out where and what kind of programs your students will be transitioning to when they leave elementary or middle school. I toured programs a couple of years ago and it was a valuable experience because now I can share with parents the options that are available, and as a team, we can determine what is appropriate. Week 02 – week 02 discussion – the oil refining case

Scenario:
A few years ago, the top executive of a large oil refining company (based in New York) was convicted of financial statement fraud. One of the issues in the case involved the way the company accounted for its oil inventories. In particular, the company would purchase crude oil from exploration companies and then process the oil into finished oil products, such as jet fuel, diesel fuel, and so forth. Because of the ready market for these finished products, the company would record its oil inventory at the selling prices of the finished products less the cost to refine the oil (instead of at cost) as soon as it purchased or discovered the crude oil. In addition to the fraud in the case, the type of accounting was questioned because it allowed the company to recognize profit before the actual sale (and even refining) of the oil. This method was even attested to by one of the large CPA firms.
Questions:
If you were the judge in this case, would you be critical of this accounting practice? Why or why not?
