Post a description of one or more of your professional goals. Explain a certification provided by a professional organization that would be of interest to you.

Discussion: Professional Development and Certification

Consider the following scenario:

Isabel recently earned certifications offered by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and the American Organization of Nurse Executives for nurse managers and leaders. She was especially proud of this accomplishment and was confident it would serve her well as she continued her career. At a conference last week, she had found herself talking with a colleague about certification. To her surprise, her colleague suggested that she look into certification through the Project Management Institute. It had not occurred to Isabel that she might need or want that type of certification, but upon further reflection she could see how important it was to be able to manage projects effectively. She wondered how pursuing this type of certification might further her professional development and lead to new opportunities down the road. At the very least, she decided it was worth exploring further.

As you are aware, numerous nursing organizations offer opportunities for professional development, community service, and information gathering. There are also many certifications you can obtain through professional societies or organizations. Certifications recognize an individual’s specialty area knowledge and skills and can lead to professional empowerment. By obtaining certifications, you can help improve your quality of practice and increase your earning potential.

In this Discussion, you consider development opportunities afforded through professional associations and examine how earning certifications can advance your career.

To prepare:

Reflect on your professional goals. These goals may relate to the practicum professional development objectives you established in Week 1 (Document Attached), but you are encouraged to take a broader view of what you would like to accomplish in the immediate future, as well as five or 15 years from now. Identify at least one goal that is especially important to you.

Think about the benefits of becoming involved in professional organizations and obtaining certifications.

If you already have a specialty or clinical certification, reflect on how this has impacted the achievement of your professional goals thus far.

Review information about two or more of the professional organizations listed in the Learning Resources. Consider the following questions:

As you explore each organization’s website, review the mission, vision, and value statements. Also examine the strategic plan, if possible. How do these align with your interests and your professional goals?

Investigate whether the organization offers networking opportunities with fellow professionals. Is there a local or regional chapter you could join?

What are the potential benefits of obtaining a certification through each organization? Examine the criteria for certification.

Evaluate your readiness and desire to become certified through each organization. What hesitations, if any, do you have?

How and why might this certification be useful to you and/or enhance your professional development?

Post a description of one or more of your professional goals. Explain a certification provided by a professional organization that would be of interest to you. Explain how and why this additional certification would be useful to you and/or enhance your professional development. Evaluate your readiness to obtain this certification, noting any reservations you may have.

Read a selection of your colleagues’ responses.

Respond to at least two of your colleagues on two different days, using one or more of the following approaches:

Ask a probing question, substantiated with additional background information, evidence, or research.

Share an insight from having read your colleagues’ postings, synthesizing the information to provide new perspectives.

Validate an idea with your own experience and additional research.

Thoroughly examine how Hawthorne’s short story is an exemplification of Aristotelian Virtue Ethics.

Write and submit an essay of 900-1100 substantive (thoughtful, insightful) and well written words on ONLY ONE of the following topics:

1.  The focus of Unit 5 is Deontology, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t see competing schools of ethics within Bierce’s short story “A Horseman in the Sky,” which appears in chapter five.  Ethics is about dilemmas and choices, often at competition with one another for resolution.  Situate this story within a few competing ethical theories.  Integrate at least two other readings from this chapter and/or prior chapters.

OR

2. Thoroughly examine how Hawthorne’s short story is an exemplification of Aristotelian Virtue Ethics.  (Do not neglect the Aristotelian part and be sure to integrate at least two other readings from the unit).

Based on your reading of the above, has your view of what constitutes the term “civic engagement” changed or expanded? Explain why, either yes or no, and use at least two specific examples.

Step One: Read below about what the term “civic engagement” means.
Civic engagement means working to make a difference in one’s community and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in a community, through political and non-political processes. Civic participation encompasses a wide range of formal and informal activities.
Some examples: Voting; volunteering; participating in group activities; attending meetings to get educated on matters of local, town or school governance; rallying or protesting; and even community gardening. Some are individual activities that benefit society (e.g., voting) or group activities that benefit either the group members (e.g., recreational soccer teams) or society (e.g., volunteer organizations). In addition to the direct benefit that civic engagement provides to the community, it can also produce secondary health benefits for participants, such as contributing to a feeling of belonging or purpose and increasing knowledge of issues.

Question One: Based on your reading of the above, has your view of what constitutes the term “civic engagement” changed or expanded? Explain why, either yes or no, and use at least two specific examples.

Step Two: Check out “Democracy 76: The Bucket List for Involved Citizens” at https://www.wethepurple.org/democracy-76-things. Read over the “bucket list” at this link. The list is organized under five headings: “Stay Informed,” “Vote,” “Participate,” “Help Others,” and “Get Social.”

Question Two: Describe any of your own civic engagement activities that you have engaged in up to this point. Be specific. It doesn’t have to be big. Or if you’ve done nothing on the “bucket list,” choose someone you know who has done civic engagement and describe, being specific, what they’ve done.

Question Three: Choose one item under each of the five headings on the “bucket list” that you have never done but might be interested in exploring further. List the heading and the activity under it. Also, explain the steps you would take to get involved or learn more about how to start engaging in that activity. For example, if you want to attend a local school board meeting, look online and find the URL for its website and when they typically meet. Also, what types of decisions do they make that affect our lives? Or, if you want to volunteer for an organization, find its URL and who coordinates volunteers, and what you have to do in order to become a volunteer. Be specific for each of the five activities you list, using examples and including URLs and names if that’s part of the necessary research to learn more about an activity and get participation in that activity off the ground.

What are the behavioral consequences of the way budgets are being used in the scenario above?

Overview:

Your case study looks Halston and Stokes, a venture capital firm. Answer all questions posed completely.

Case Study:

Granger Stokes, the managing partner of the venture capital firm of Halston and Stokes, was dissatisfied with the top management of PrimeDrive, a manufacturer of computer disk drives. Halston and Stokes had invested $20 million in PrimeDrive, and the return on their investment had been below expectations for several years. In a tense meeting of the board of directors of PrimeDrive, Stokes exercised his firm’s rights as the major equity investor in PrimeDrive and fired PrimeDrive’s chief executive officer (CEO). He then quickly moved to have the board of directors of PrimeDrive appoints himself as the new CEO.

Stokes prided himself on his hard-driving management style. At the first management meeting, he asked two of the managers to stand and fired them on the spot, just to show everyone who was in control of the company. At the budget review meeting that followed, he ripped up the departmental budgets that had been submitted for his review and yelled at the managers for their “wimpy, do nothing targets.” He then ordered everyone to submit new budgets calling for at least a 40% increase in sales volume and announced that he would not accept excuses for results that fell below budget.

Keri Kalani, an accountant working for the production manager at PrimeDrive, discovered toward the end of the year that her boss had not been scrapping defective disk drives that had been returned by customers. Instead, he had been shipping them in new cartons to other customers to avoid booking losses. Quality control had deteriorated during the year as a result of the push for increased volume, and returns of defective disk drives were running as high as 15% of the new drives shipped. When she confronted her boss with her discovery, he told her to mind her own business. And then, to justify his actions, he said, “All of us managers are finding ways to hit Stokes’s targets.
