Humanities Test-Out 02 – Visual Art

Competency
Develop a vocabulary for criticizing, evaluating, and describing works of art.

For this assessment task, you are asked to act as an art critic and analyze a series of works. When art critics discuss art, they describe art works in terms of style and medium. Art critics interpret meanings of art and make judgements of a work’s validity to the importance of a piece in the larger context of art history and culture. Art critics also evaluate art in the context of aesthetics.

Please watch the presentation below as a refresher on this deliverable’s content. The presentation will not tell you everything you need to know to pass this test-out, but it should serve as a refresher.

What are the main characteristics of the Elizabethan stage (or theater)?

Write a 250-word (minimum) essay one of the following topics. There are two topics for this Module because there is no Discussion Assignment because of the Final Exam.

What are the main characteristics of the Elizabethan stage (or theater)? Identify the ways in which Shakespeare can be compared to a contemporary “Movie Star” or “Rock Star.” Cite examples supporting your answers to both questions.

Provide an example of a situation where you encountered (or an example on television or friend/family experienced, etc.) hate speech or loaded language. Describe that situation fully since I wasn’t there with details of nonverbal communication signals, was it hate speech or loaded language (specify which and why), and other details. How did that language impact you/the person?

What could improve that verbal communication within that situation? Provide an analysis of the situation with what we learned this week through readings/textbook.

After sharing and analyzing the situation consider these statements from the textbook:

Chapter 3, “there is no intrinsic meaning in phenomena but that humans actively construct meanings and attach values”.

Chapter 4, “language is powerful and that values inherent in the words we use shape our perceptions and those of others.”

Do these two statements contradict or correlate to each other? What things have we learned this far that help support your answer? How does these statements relate back to the situation with hate speech or loaded language?

For this week’s discussion post I chose to talk about the Cotton Eyed Joe dance.  The cotton eyed joe originated before the Civil War with the slaves.  It soon became a very popular southern square dance.  I personally danced to this song at every party growing up because it is very easy to learn and do.  There are only a few steps in the entire dance that are repeated through the whole song.  It is a fast tempo with lots of kicking and movement of the feet.  This dance uses a lot of space and energy as every time the chorus of the song comes on you move and face a different direction to do the dance.  I think this dance will move on to future generations because it is very fun and easy to dance to! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ovq0YTMGk1A

I chose the cupid shuffle because this is a dance I’m very familiar and comfortable with and it goes way back to my elementary school days and even throughout middle school, I remember certain parties we had in the gym where this dance was very popular during those days. Some of the movements used in this dance are space and energy because your moving, turning different directions, kicking, swaying, and all that uses space and energy because you have to memorize this dance on what step you’re taking next. The cupid shuffle came out in 2007 and it originated in Lafayette, Louisiana. I personally used to dance this dance during any party when it came on and so did everyone else because it’s a freestyle solo dance and it’s fun. I think the cupid shuffle can be still danced today because the old is gold and the newer generations may enjoy it and the older generations will always jam to it whenever it comes on.

Additional Guidelines for Writing Essay Three

Below is information that can help you to think about who the essay is supposed to communicate with, how to do the Essay Three Assignment and what the assignment should look like.

Audience and Purpose

Your readers are people who hold standard views about ethnicity, identity, and culture.  Your goal is to move readers from what they already believe before they started reading your paper to what you want them to believe by the end of the paper.

Process

Important Note: Since this is the last paper of the semester, you will not be able to revise your paper for a better grade.

Structure (you must submit an outline with your essay)

Using one of the templates for “Introducing standard views” found on page 23 of They Say/I Say, your paper should also begin with an introduction that 1) describes the problem you see with the standard view and 2) ends with your thesis statement.

The next set of paragraphs should make your own case, supporting your thesis statement, using the moves from They Say, I Say. These paragraphs must have topic sentences and use specific ideas from all your reading.

The second-to-last paragraph is where you will present your naysayer — both explaining the naysayer’s position and your explaining your answer to the objection. See Chapter 7 of They Say. I Say for more on how to use the naysayer.

The paper will then end with a conclusion that makes clear an answer to the question “so what?”
