The practicalities of transitioning from transaction to relational libraries : a case study of libraries uses during the russia/ukraine conflict

Introduction:

  • Library is not only about the books anymore, but the people
  • Modern libraries are shifting from transactional to relational services
  • A shift in practicalities also bring a shift in the librarians roles
  • These practicalities will be shown through what libraries are doing/did during the Russia/Ukraine conflict

Examples:

Helping refugees-

  • Providing shelter and places to be,
  • Language cafe’s,
  • IT and homework help for kids,
  • A gateway to a new country and system-Many libraries are offering assistance and guidance both personal and via online resources to help Ukrainian refugees get as good a start as possible in the new place and system.
  • Collecting valid information resources about the conflict-Libraries are collecting and promoting valid information and facts about the conflict and the background and are also pointing out sources of obvious misinformation.
  • Raising awareness, engagement and creating debate-A war and conflict is far more complex than the daily headlines and key figures on refugees, casualties etc. As a democratic and trustworthy cornerstone in the community, libraries are a great platform for raising awareness, engagement and debate about something, that is difficult and has many facets and aspects to uncover in order to understand and help.
  • Connecting with the local community-Libraries are about community and I’m thrilled to see libraries create programs that aims at connecting Ukrainians with the local community; Board game nights, dinners, reading clubs, LEGO programs for kids and a lot of great, free and wholehearted programs that helps people connect.

Background and significance :

  • Libraries has always been means in creating stronger communities and a better world and across the world libraries are playing an active role in the conflict helping those in need.
  • Libraries have transformed into a meeting place-The library is no longer defined by the number of books it has on its shelves, but rather it is now about being a living space for the users.-the libraries have always been good at being aligned with what people want and people do not want only lending services
  • libraries are being engaged in the conflict helping victims, refugees and securing knowledge and information about the war
  • The role of the relational librarian (Relational competence + Competences and skills: LIS education vs needs in the professional field-Formal education is one side of librarianship, professional practice is another)

Literature review :

Up to you

Research design and methodologies :

Up to you but.. Would prefer any of the below

  • descriptive research,
  • analytical research
  • Comparative analysis(Comperison of LIS education: Competences and skills: LIS education vs needs in the professional field-Formal education is one side of librarianship, professional practice is another)
  • Case study (libraries actions during the russian/ukraine war compared to the usual lending services libraries are known for)

Conclusion :

With regards to the conclusion it is supposed to help the reader in udnerstanding why the research should matter to them, it should be a synthesis of key points instead of continuing to mention new examples
