Publication Review/Analysis
What to do.
For this project, dig deeper into authoritative publications in your field (Cybersecurity, Information and Computer Technology).
In Project 1, the focus was on comparing the form, structure, style, and other features of authoritative texts to popular and trade publications. (Project 1 is attached if needed as a reference)
For this project, the focus will be more on the content and consistency of the authoritative texts to determine more directly what the standards of authoritative publications are.
• Select two authoritative publications in your discipline (may re-use any authoritative sources from Project 1 if you choose).
• Google the most prestigious journals in the field of Cybersecurity, Information and Computer Technology, if you are having trouble deciding on journals to review.
• From there, use the library database to locate and download the most recent issue available. (East Carolina University).
o This means you’ll need to download a bunch of articles that make up an edition or issue. If available, also collect statements from the editors/introductory remarks.
• From there, skim through (don’t read word for word) each of the articles.
• Take notes about the major ideas or themes that appear to be consistent in that edition.
• The review should compare the two publications around the following questions: (Please clearly cover information addressing each question)
o – What are the major topics and research questions being addressed in the journal issues under consideration?
o – What research methodologies are employed to investigate those questions?
o – Does your discipline emphasize qualitative or quantitative research designs?
o – How are research results presented and explained?
o – Does the publication favor individual authorship or collaboration?
• Sources. Again, select two publications. Find the most recent issue or edition that the library has access to. (East Carolina University)
o If that’s issue volume 5, issue 2, download every article that appears in that issue (depending on the journal, this may range from a few to about a dozen individual articles).
o You should skim each of these articles, but cite 2-3 from each publication, for a total of 4-6 cited articles in your review.
Audience. This review will be addressed to an audience that may or may not be well-versed in this discipline (Cybersecurity, Information and Computer Technology), so be aware of excessively technical language or concepts that must be explained.
