This dissertation will critically examine the relationship between the Egyptian writer Sayyid Qutb and influence on modern day Islamist jihadi groups. Qubt was a significant authority who has influenced the likes of Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri. This thesis is a very contentious topic to discuss in terms of gaining a understanding of where Islamist ideas and influences stems from. The research will include an analysis of primary and secondary sources. The aim of the dissertation is to evaluate how Islamist groups are products of Qutb’s thoughts. This will be contrasted with the ideas of left wing individuals such as Amina Wadud and Hasan Hanafi who used Qutb’s work in a positive light. The main aim is to find and come to a firm conclusion that Sayyid Qubt’s ideas and thought was one that can be misinterpreted by others.
