Create two new patterns for measuring statistical results and analytical results within the import and export category and sub-category, in yearly time series.
This assessment requests you to visualise the Australian International Trade dataset (from ABS) that contains over 33 years of data between 1988 and 2021. The dataset has import and export information including 10 main categories and 67 sub-categories. Combined with data visualisation techniques learned during classes including interactive visualisation skills, you should create statistical patterns and analytical patterns between main categories and sub-categories for both import and export. The visual comparison between import and export should be created for both the main categories and selected sub-categories. Explain any trend and breakthrough point. You can use all data attributes for this assessment.
Task
To complete the assessment task you will need to:
Understand the sample trade dataset and its characters, styles, and patterns. Merge import and export datasets together and rescale, reform, clean up the data.
Create two new patterns for measuring statistical results and analytical results within the import and export category and sub-category, in yearly time series. Reformat data for comparison between import and export both category and sub-category
Import patterns into visualisation software such as Tableau or PowerBI. Then create time series charts for comparing between import and export for the TEN main categories from the dataset.
Create interactive charts exploring details of trade for the TEN main categories. Find any trends and breakthrough points in interactive charts, then explain what you have found and how that has happened.
Create a visual dashboard that combines time series charts and interactive charts together for ONE main category and its sub-category.
Create a visual storyboard for ONE main category to illustrate the relationship between those trends and breakthrough points.
Write a summary of the visual dashboard and storyboard highlights and advantages.
Write a report to summarise the results of visual analytics for selected categories. Any recommendation should consider the Australian local industry’s impact.
This assessment requests each student to visualise the Australian International Trade dataset (https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/economy/international-trade/international-trade-goods-and-services-australia/jan-2022 (Links to an external site.)) that contains over 33 years of data between 1988 and 2021. The dataset has import and export data including 10 main categories and 67 sub-categories. Over $362 billion export and $233 billion import occurred during 2020.
Submission
Submission should contain two files. One is a zipped file containing all working data files from Excel, Tableau, PowerBI, or any other data visualisation tool format. The data files should have all the data and graphs presented in the assessment. The other file is a report, which should be 5-6 pages in length including graphs.
The two files should be named as YouName_A3.zip file and YouName_A3.docx file.
Length
The final report should be 5-6 pages in length including graphs.
Assessment objectives
We are looking for your ability to:
Demonstrate understanding of international trade data characteristics
Ability to use data visual analytics methods to present information
Ability to create visual patterns to visualise a dataset
Demonstrate the ability to critique different data visualisation approaches
Demonstrate the ability to deploy data visualisation method in a variable data format
Marking Criteria
Use excel to merge export and import data together. Creating statistical and analytical patterns in excel format. (10%)
Deploying both patterns into Tableau or Power BI to create time series charts for storytelling and analyse the relationship between category and sub-category. (10%)
Find bigger trends and breakthrough points in TEN main categories, and explain those trends and breakthrough points. (30%)
Create dashboard and story to explore ONE main category and its sub-categories for storytelling and find out trends and breakthrough points. Explain the weights and impact levels from those trends and breakthrough points (30%)
Summarise advantages of dashboard and storyboard have been found throughout this trade data visualisation process. (10%)
Write a 5-6 page report including graphs, executive summary, and conclusion. (10%)
