The Ford (2010) and the Noguera (2008) readings this week begin to provide some answers to the question, “What can be done to decrease economic and racial/ethnic achievement gaps in schools?” Ford addresses the underrepresentation of students of Color in gifted education while Noguera addresses how students growing up in poverty and male students (often Black and Latino) are disciplined at higher rates than their peers, thus losing out on learning opportunities. Select one of the articles and first discuss how gifted education or school discipline can contribute to economic and racial/ethnic achievement gaps. Next, discuss and evaluate one of the suggestions/solutions proposed by the author in the article you selected. What do they propose and how might this work to reduce economic and racial/ethnic achievement gaps? Finally, what limitations might their suggestion/solution have (e.g., it only applies to relatively few students, it’s exceedingly expensive, etc.).
