Cryptography is used to protect confidential data in many areas. CASE STUDY: Active Labor: Susan Wong
Mrs. Wong, a first-time mother, is admitted to the birthing suite in early labor after spontaneous rupture of membranes at home. She is at 38 weeks of gestation with a history of abnormal alpha-fetoprotein levels at 16 weeks of pregnancy. She was scheduled for ultrasonography to visualize the fetus to rule out an open spinal defect or Down syndrome, but never followed through. Mrs. Wong and her husband disagreed about what to do (keep or terminate the pregnancy) if the ultrasonography indicated a spinal problem, so they felt they did not want this information.

1. As the nurse, what priority data would you collect from this couple to help define relevant interventions to meet their needs?
2. How can you help this couple if they experience a negative outcome in the birthing suite? What are your personal views on terminating or continuing a pregnancy with a risk of a potential anomaly? What factors may influence your views?
3. With the influence of the recent Human Genome Project and the possibility of predicting open spinal defects earlier in pregnancy, how will maternity care change in the future?
In their personal lives, people routinely purchase goods or services. At times, they “need” or “want” something new; or it is time to replace/replenish an existing product. Whether they need to purchase groceries, buy gas for the car, or stretch a bit to get that exciting new toy, their investment in “goods” is ongoing. Similarly, they utilize the services that companies provide to enrich, replenish, fulfill, maintain, or enhance their lives. Describe how a marketer could develop differing marketing strategies to target your personal use of goods or services. Provide a real-world example of a marketer who does this. Include links to relevant marketing pieces to illustrate your example. In replies to peers, discuss the effectiveness of marketers in targeting to personal use in the examples provided.
Geographic Areas
How can the geographic area where the court is situated affect the granting of probation? Provide specific examples.
When probation is a statutory alternative, judges differ in their approach to granting it. Although the recommendation of the probation department would be important-it is difficult to envision too many cases in which judges would grant probation against the recommendation of a probation officer –judges may also seek advice from the police and prosecutor. The geographic area where a court is situated may affect the granting of probation. Social and Political attitudes in rural and urban jurisdictions can differ and thus affect the process, and when the court calendars are crowded, as they are in may urban areas, plea bargaining is more likely to result in probation being granted.

Problem: During each four-hour period, the Smalltown police force requires the following number of on-duty police officers: eight from midnight to 4am; seven from 4am to 8am; six from 8am to noon; six from noon to 4pm; five from 4pm to 8pm; and four from 8pm to midnight. Each police officer works two consecutive four hour shifts.
