How To Work On This Assignment(Example Essay/Draft)
The United Nations Global Compact is a set of ten principles urging corporations to adopt ethical and sustainable business practices. These principles cover human rights, labor, the environment, and anti-corruption measures. In this essay, we will explore the principles that are not honored by U.S. businesses and those that are recognized by U.S. businesses but not in other countries. Furthermore, we will discuss whether this UN effort is valuable or harmful.
One principle that is not consistently honored by U.S. businesses is the principle of labor rights. The Global Compact calls for the elimination of all forms of forced labor and child labor, as well as the recognition of the right to collective bargaining. However, numerous U.S. companies have been found to engage in exploitative labor practices, including sweatshop labor and wage theft. These companies often outsource their labor to developing countries where labor laws are less stringent and enforcement is weak.
Another principle that is not consistently honored by U.S. businesses is environmental sustainability. The Global Compact calls for businesses to take a precautionary approach to environmental challenges and to promote the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies. However, U.S. businesses are often criticized for their high levels of carbon emissions, deforestation, and pollution.
On the other hand, there are principles recognized by U.S. businesses that are not always recognized in other countries. For example, the principle of anti-corruption is well-established in the U.S. business environment, with strict regulations and enforcement mechanisms in place. However, in some countries, corruption is deeply ingrained in business practices and is seen as a necessary means to get ahead.
Despite these inconsistencies, the UN effort to promote ethical and sustainable business practices is valuable. The Global Compact provides a framework for businesses to adopt principles that benefit not only their bottom line but also society and the planet. By adhering to these principles, businesses can build trust with their stakeholders, attract socially conscious consumers and investors, and promote a more equitable and sustainable world.
In conclusion, the United Nations Global Compact provides a roadmap for businesses to adopt ethical and sustainable practices. While there are inconsistencies in how these principles are honored, the overall effort is valuable in promoting a more just and sustainable global economy.

Considering the content we have covered over the last week (Weeks 6; human evolution – prokaryotes), what was something you already knew, and what was something that surprised you?
How To Work On This Assignment(Example Essay/Draft)
Over the last week, we have delved into the fascinating topics of human evolution and prokaryotes. This content has been incredibly insightful, and I have learned a lot about the origins and development of humanity and the importance of prokaryotes in the ecosystem.
One aspect that I was already familiar with was the theory of natural selection proposed by Charles Darwin. The idea that organisms that are better adapted to their environment will be more likely to survive and pass on their genes is a concept that has been widely discussed in biology classes and popular science media. However, it was interesting to learn more about the specifics of how natural selection has shaped human evolution, such as the development of bipedalism and larger brain size.
On the other hand, I was surprised to discover just how important prokaryotes are to the ecosystem. Before this course, I was unaware of the critical role that bacteria and archaea play in nutrient cycling and decomposition, as well as their contributions to human health and biotechnology. Learning about the diversity of prokaryotes and their incredible adaptability was eye-opening, and it made me appreciate these tiny organisms even more.
Overall, studying human evolution and prokaryotes has expanded my understanding of the natural world and how interconnected all living things are. I look forward to continuing to learn more about these topics and their impact on our planet.
