A volcano has erupted in Alaska. It has left a great deal of mud and ash on roads. People in the continental United States are sending you canned food, brooms, gloves, lawn mowers, and heavy equipment. Volunteers have arrived to help. What of these items are useful to you? How can you avoid getting unwanted items? Can the volunteers help you? How would you put them to work?

After you have created your new discussion topic, you are required to read and respond to a minimum of two (2) of your classmates discussion topics.  Think of your responses in terms of a contribution to a dialogue, not a writing exercise or a chat room.  Elaborate a single idea and keep your post short but concise as if you were holding a conversation with your classmate(s).   Incorporate what you have learned from the weekly reading material and from your own real-world experiences.  Don’t forget to use proper APA citations and references whenever necessary.

William: Scenario 4: A volcano has erupted in Alaska.

The items that are being sent that will be useful in this situation are the canned foods, gloves, and heavy equipment. Because of this disaster, people may be in need of food because their homes could have been destroyed in the process of the volcano eruption. Gloves would be useful to have for cleaning up the debris that would be left from the eruption. Finally, heavy equipment would be required to clean up the mud and ash that would be left on the roads. You can avoid getting unwanted items for donation by doing an assessment on what donations you need, and then making the specific items that are needed known to the public. The volunteers can help with the sorting of the donations and help with the clean up efforts.

When a natural disaster strikes, often times communities are not as prepared as they could be or should be. A volcano erupting in Alaska probably caught most citizens off guard and now they need the help of volunteers and sponsors to help out the communities. The first step in avoiding unwanted supplies could be to have the media liaison express to surrounding communities and the media what supplies and help is actually needed to help the suffering community. Of the items listed, brooms and lawn mowers would not be of much help to clean up mud and ash off of the roads. Canned food, gloves, and heavy equipment would be of great need in order to help the community members clean up and to have food. Volunteers can be very beneficial to helping communities after natural disasters. It is very important for members of the local government and incident command team to guide the volunteers and tell them exactly how they can help in the current situation. Volunteers in this scenario could help clean up the mud and ash off of the roads, gather all sent in supplies, and offer any other help to the members of the community that are struggling.

Howton & Howton Worldwide (HHW) is planning its operations for the coming year, and the CEO wants you to forecast the firm’s additional funds needed (AFN). The firm is operating at full capacity. Data for use in the forecast are shown below. However, the CEO is concerned about the impact of a change in the payout ratio from the 10% that was used in the past to 50%, which the firm’s investment bankers have recommended. Based on the AFN equation, by how much would the AFN for the coming year change if HHW increased the payout from 10% to the new and higher level?

FIN  534 – Homework Chapter 12
Rating A

1. Which of the following statements is CORRECT?
a. Perhaps the most important step when developing forecasted financial statements is to determine the breakdown of common equity between common stock and retained earnings.
b. The first, and perhaps the most critical, step in forecasting financial requirements is to forecast future sales.
c. Forecasted financial statements, as discussed in the text, are used primarily as a part of the managerial compensation program, where management’s historical performance is evaluated.
d. The capital intensity ratio gives us an idea of the physical condition of the firm’s fixed assets.
e. The AFN equation produces more accurate forecasts than the forecasted financial statement method, especially if fixed assets are lumpy, economies of scale exist, or if excess capacity exists.

2. Which of the following statements is CORRECT?
a. The sustainable growth rate is the maximum achievable growth rate without the firm having to raise external funds. In other words, it is the growth rate at which the firm’s AFN equals zero.
b. If a firm’s assets are growing at a positive rate, but its retained earnings are not increasing, then it would be impossible for the firm’s AFN to be negative.
c. If a firm increases its dividend payout ratio in anticipation of higher earnings, but sales and earnings actually decrease, then the firm’s actual AFN must, mathematically, exceed the previously calculated AFN.
d. Higher sales usually require higher asset levels, and this leads to what we call AFN. However, the AFN will be zero if the firm chooses to retain all of its profits, i.e., to have a zero dividend payout ratio.
e. Dividend policy does not affect the requirement for external funds based on the AFN equation.

3. Which of the following statements is CORRECT?
a. When we use the AFN equation, we assume that the ratios of assets and liabilities to sales (A0*/S0 and L0*/S0) vary from year to year in a stable, predictable manner.
b. When fixed assets are added in large, discrete units as a company grows, the assumption of constant ratios is more appropriate than if assets are relatively small and can be added in small increments as sales grow.
c. Firms whose fixed assets are “lumpy” frequently have excess capacity, and this should be accounted for in the financial forecasting process.
d. For a firm that uses lumpy assets, it is impossible to have small increases in sales without expanding fixed assets.
e. There are economies of scale in the use of many kinds of assets. When economies occur the ratios are likely to remain constant over time as the size of the firm increases.

4. Last year Jain Technologies had $250 million of sales and $100 million of fixed assets, so its FA/Sales ratio was 40%. However, its fixed assets were used at only 75% of capacity. Now the company is developing its financial forecast for the coming year. As part of that process, the company wants to set its target Fixed Assets/Sales ratio at the level it would have had had it been operating at full capacity. What target FA/Sales ratio should the company set?
a. 28.5%
b. 30.0%
c. 31.5%
d. 33.1%
e. 34.7%

Sales growth rate = g 40% Last year’s notes payable $15.0
Last year’s total assets = A0* $500.0 Last year’s accruals $20.0

b. $33.6
c. $35.3

Share two or three of the most valuable pieces of information or skills you have learned from this class. How would you use the different types of software we discussed? Are some tools better for some uses than others? Be specific and give an example or two. How do you plan to integrate these new skills into your future school and work experiences?

How do you plan to integrate these new skills into your future school and work experiences?
Give an example of a situation where a presentation would help you communicate information to others.
When creating a presentation, are there any legal, ethical, or security implications for what you include?
Based on your module readings, explain how you could use visual tools (video, pictures, graphs, charts, etc.) to help to convey information in a presentation. How might your tone and method of presentation differ if you were communicating with a friend or family member as opposed to a co-worker or supervisor?

Your initial response should be at least 150 words. Each of your follow-up responses should be at least 50 words.
Use properly documented sources outside of this course to justify, support and expand on your response. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
