Discuss the etiology, course, and the structural/functional abnormalities of schizophrenia.

Purpose:Analyze and apply critical thinking skills in the psychopathology of mental health patients and provide treatment and health promotion while applying evidence-based research.Scenario:

C.Z. is a 20-year-old Caucasian male who is in his second year of college. He is seeking treatment due to persistent fears that campus security and the local police are tracking and surveilling him. He cites occasional lags in his internet speed as evidence that surveillance devices are interfering with his electronics. His intense anxiety about this has begun getting in the way of his ability to complete schoolwork, and his friends are concerned – he says they have told him, “you’re not making sense.”

C.Z. occasionally laughs abruptly and inappropriately and sometimes stops speaking mid-sentence, looking off in the distance as though he sees or hears something. He expresses concern about electronics in the room (phone, computer) potentially being monitored and asks repeatedly about patient confidentiality, stating that he wants to be sure the police won’t be informed about his treatment. His beliefs are fixed, and if they are challenged, his tone becomes hostile.

If you were hiring a new employee in your work unit, how would you rank the importance of the following qualities?
Discussion Question #1:

1)  Imagine that you are a first-line manager of a department in a relatively small hospital located in a semi-rural area. For many months there had been rumors of a possible merger with another semi-rural hospital half again the size of yours located about 12 miles away. Both administration and the board of directors had been declining to comment on the rumors although it was apparent that some kind of negotiations were underway. In about mid-November all managers were officially notified that the merger would take place effective the first of January. The two hospitals were to become a single corporate entity with two locations, and functions and services would be consolidated wherever practical. Describe in detail the possible effects of the merger and all that it entails on you and your position.

2) It is stated in the chapter that the three ways of getting employees to implement change are: Tell them what to do; Sell them on what must be done; and Involve them in determining the substance and direction of the change. For each of the three means, describe an instance in which it is a preferred or even essential approach and an instance in which it is an inappropriate or perhaps even harmful approach.

3) If you were hiring a new employee in your work unit, how would you rank the importance of the following qualities?  That is, how much weight would you assign to each in making your decision? Explain.

  • Personal values (ex. work ethic and integrity)
  • Individual intelligence

  • Conscientiousness in performing the job

    • Some employers use integrity tests as part of the screening process.  Are there problems with integrity tests? Can you test for integrity?
    • If you were a work unit supervisor, which of the following do you think is more important to improving organizational performance?  Explain.
  • Encouraging employees to participate in work and organizational decisions
  • Setting clear, challenging work goals
    • As a manager you realize the supervisors who report to you make errors when they rate their employees (e.g., too lenient, rate everyone the same, etc.).  You notice a consultant is offering a training session on how to avoid appraisal rating errors.  How successful do you think such a course would be in eliminating these errors?
    • As a supervisor, if you asked or surveyed your employees about the importance of pay as a factor in making job decisions, do you think employees would over-state or understate its value to them?

In this role, you are responsible for increasing the hospital’s presence in the community, reaching new patients, and ensuring patients receive effective and coordinated care. You are aware of ABC Hospital’s current issue with charity care: there is no defined policy for who can write off an account, and no defined standards for what qualifies a patient to receive charity care. Purpose:Analyze and apply critical thinking skills in the psychopathology of mental health patients and provide treatment and health promotion while applying evidence-based research.Scenario:

Jax is a 66-year-old Caucasian female whose wife has encouraged her to seek treatment. She has never been in therapy before, and has no history of depression or anxiety. However, her alcohol use has recently been getting in the way of her marriage, and interfering with her newly-retired life. She describes drinking increasing amounts over the last year, currently consuming approximately a six-pack of beer per day. She notes that this amount “doesn’t give me the same buzz as it used to.” She denies ever experiencing “the shakes” or any other withdrawal symptoms if she skips a day of drinking.

Jax comments that her wife is her biggest motivation to decrease her alcohol use. She tells Jax that she gets argumentative and irritable when she drinks, though she does not always remember these incidents. She has also fallen while intoxicated twice, causing bruises both times and hitting her head on one of the occasions.

Discuss an event (something that happened to you) that had an effect on the person you are today.

Discuss an event (something that happened to you) that had an effect on the person you are today.  What was the event, why did it happen and how did it impact/change you?  What did you learn from this experience?  Please be detailed in your discussion and try to reach the 500-word requirement.  You may go over 500 words.  Remember that in writing a narrative the more you personalize it the more powerful it reads so use the pronoun I.

Composition Exercise Directions
I’ll score your composition exercise on a 4-point scale with a point for format, a point for content, a point for focus and a point for clarity.

For your two composition exercises please write:

1. (format) a 500-word composition.  Use Courier New, 12-point font and double space and MLA style.

2. (content) Your composition needs a main idea and specific details that support your response to the topic.  Support comes from examples from your life, stories or what you’ve read and researched.

3. (focus) Stay focused on the topic.  Everything you write should have a connection to the topic and your ideas.

4. (clarity) When you proofread check for common errors like fragments, run-on’s, commonly confused words, tense shift, subject-verb disagreement, spelling, etc.  Try to adhere to the KISS Principle.  This means keep your sentences short and simple and divide your composition into short, easy to read paragraphs.  For a 500-word composition you should have between six and eight paragraphs.
