Identify the website or product you have been assigned (including a screenshot), and briefly describe the reason you selected the section of the Website evaluated.

A) Select a portion of a website that you are interested in. – Walmart.com

B) You are to perform a heuristic evaluation of that Website or product. You are required to use Nielsen’s 10 heuristics for this assignment, available online at: https://www.nngroup.com/articles/ten-usability-heuristics/

C) To guide you in your complete analysis of the usability analysis, you are required to identify at least one scenario that reflects how a user is likely to use your website or product in real-life. Try and replicate the user experience as part of the study heuristic evaluation.

D) This can be very general — if you were evaluating a hotel or airline website, for example, you might think about someone trying to cash in all their frequent “traveler” points, or someone trying to trade in their points as part of a transaction. Your goal here is to develop a basic scenario that will guide your heuristic evaluation.

E) Using the scenario, you will then systematically evaluate the interface – screen by screen on a transactional basis of your chosen site or product, checking to see which interface elements you encounter (if any) result in problematic experiences. Once you experience challenging experiences, you will document these areas and identify ways in which these areas can be improved potentially to avoid violating any of Nielsen’s heuristics.

Note: You should work from your scenario, and not work from the heuristics (i.e., don’t take each heuristic one at a time, looking for heuristic violations on the site).

The paper should be 4-6 pages in length. You must cite all sources using APA format. It is strongly encouraged you integrate at least 2-3 screenshots of your user experience to include the outputs of your study. When responding, make sure to answer each of these questions:

Questions

1. Identify the website or product you have been assigned (including a screenshot), and briefly describe the reason you selected the section of the Website evaluated.

2. Describe the scenario you used to focus your evaluation and explain how you approached the site/product with respect to the usability heuristics.

3. Provide a detailed analysis of the usability flaws you found for this site, along with a) the heuristics each flaw violates, and b) an explanation of why this flaw violates those heuristics.

4. Discuss some possible design recommendations that could improve the site, explaining how each recommended change would address the usability flaws you identified above.

Explain how you will effectively communicate team objectives, and consider the consequences of failing to do so.

Scenario
Assume you are a consultant hired by an established medium-sized manufacturing corporation with 250 employees. It directly markets one unique product. The corporation is run by a new CEO and 11 other executives who have been with the organization for varying lengths of time. The new CEO has an aggressive growth objective for the corporation of 100 percent over the next five years. The current business model will not support this objective and needs to be updated.
Your task is to create a team that will work together over a 9-month time frame to develop a proposal for a new business model and growth strategies. Your responsibilities include convening the team, assigning roles and responsibilities, structuring the team, monitoring activities and production, and documenting outcomes. The team members must come from at least three different functional areas because the new CEO wants input from a variety of stakeholders. The challenge is that under the old business model, none of the personnel working in the functional areas communicated or collaborated. In addition, the former CEO never asked for new ideas and seemed oblivious to issues the corporation was facing.
Now, you need to develop a plan for building your team that you could present to the CEO. The following are key ideas for you to keep in mind as you write your plan, but this isn’t an outline for the plan. An outline and what you should include in your plan is defined in the Instructions section below:
• The team will work together for a sustained period of time.
• The visible outcome of the teamwork should focus on the development of a new business model and growth strategies; however, the success of the team as an outcome is up to you and the team members.
• There should be a representative from each of the three functional areas to produce the model.
• A variety of perspectives is important.
• Communication and collaboration are new priorities for teamwork; these processes have not been considered as valuable in the past.
• Issues impacting the business model have not previously been identified by the business leadership.
• Innovation previously has not been prioritized as a factor in the business model.

Instructions
The purpose of this assignment is to create an overview of what should be considered when developing teams. It is not intended to be an in-depth analysis. Based on the scenario above, develop a plan with the following sections.

• Title page.
• Introduction.
Briefly explain the goal of your plan and the high-level approach you took in developing it.
• Functional Area Team Member Selections.
Select and describe team members from three of these functional areas: human resources, accounting/finance, marketing/sales, information technology, and operations.
• Reasons for Functional Area Team Member Selections.
Explain the reasons for including each functional area and team member in an organizational team in terms of the advantages offered and the type of role an individual would fill.
• Characteristics of Effective Team Members.
Describe the characteristics (knowledge, skills, and abilities) each team member brings to the project, and explain how those characteristics support a team effort and will be crucial to its success.
• Communicating Team Objectives.
Explain how you will effectively communicate team objectives, and consider the consequences of failing to do so. Will you draft a team charter? Will you write a mission statement?
• Strategies for Delegating Responsibility.
Explain the types of strategies you will use to delegate responsibility within the team, how the strategies take into account individual strengths, and how responsibility is delegated fairly. Will you assign tasks or ask for volunteers?
• Strategies for Managing Conflict.
Describe strategies that will be used to avoid and resolve conflicts between members of a team, and consider the consequences of not dealing with conflict.
• Success Measurement, Tools, and Process.
Explain how the success of the team will be measured.
• Conclusion.
Summarize how your plan will result in an effective team that will contribute to organizational success.
• References page.

In what ways does the relationship between the Morlock and Eloi societies constitute a critique of capitalism, class society, classism, and/or the notion of economic prosperity?

For this Research Essay, you will be applying a critical perspective to one of our course texts: Wells’s The Time Machine, Ballard’s High-Rise, Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness, Russ’s The Female Man, or Delany’s Babel-
17. The critical perspectives available to you are Marxist, feminist, or deconstructive, as defined and explained by Lois Tyson. While this Research Essay differs from traditional research tasks in that the scholarly
sources (Tyson’s articles) have been provided for you, you will nevertheless need to read and study these sources closely in order to successfully apply the concepts, methods, and critical lenses contained in Tyson’s
writing. (NOTE: No additional research beyond Tyson’s articles will be required.)
You will accomplish this task by choosing ONE of the following options:
If you’d like to write about Wells’s The Time Machine (CHOOSE ONLY ONE):
• OPTION #1: Marxist: In what ways does the relationship between the Morlock and Eloi societies constitute a critique of capitalism, class society, classism, and/or the notion of economic prosperity? (Explore only those concepts you deem of interest.)
• OPTION #2: Deconstructive: How does the indefinite, unstable, undecidable nature of the Morlock and Eloi relationship complicate our reading of which of them is “oppressed” and which is “oppressor”?
If you’d like to write about Ballard’s High-Rise (CHOOSE ONLY ONE):
• OPTION #1: Marxist: How does the social arrangement and behavior of the tenants in the highrise serve as a critique of capitalism, classism, competition, commodification, rugged individualism, and/or repressive economic ideologies? (Explore only those concepts you deem of interest.)
• OPTION #2: Feminist: As life in the high-rise evolves, what gender roles emerge among the men and women living there? How do these roles change over time? By the novel’s end, does it offer a critique of traditional gender roles or does it reinforce them?
If you’d like to write about Le Guin’s The Left Hand of Darkness (CHOOSE ONLY ONE):
• OPTION #1: Feminist: How does the novel complicate traditional notions of “femininity” and “masculinity” for Genly Ai (and the reader) through the introduction of the Gethanian people?
How does this complication serve to critique the human understanding of gender and patriarchy?
• OPTION #2: Deconstructive: The Left Hand of Darkness explores the nature and inherent contradictions of binary oppositions: male and female; self and other; light and darkness; ally and enemy; etc. Over the course of the novel, how does Genly Ai’s relationship with Estraven lead him to a new understanding of these oppositions and his own complex, indefinite identity
as a person?
If you’d like to write about Russ’s The Female Man (CHOOSE ONLY ONE):
• OPTION #1: Feminist: Across its four different worlds and female protagonists, in what ways does the novel critique notions of patriarchy, traditional gender roles, the objectification of women, sexism, and/or the “cult of true womanhood”? (Explore only those concepts you deem of interest.)
• OPTION #2: Marxist: In what ways do the economic situations of characters like Joanna, Jeannine, and/or Laura Rose serve to critique the traditional role of women within capitalist society? Are women allowed to fulfill the “American Dream”? What role does one’s sex or gender play in determining one’s economic future? (Explore only those concepts you deem of
interest.)
If you’d like to write about Delany’s Babel-17 (CHOOSE ONLY ONE):
• OPTION #1: Deconstructive: Throughout the novel, Rydra Wong argues for the primary importance of spoken and written language for effective communication between people.
However, where and how does the novel explore the dynamic, ambiguous, and unstable nature of language? Moreover, where does the novel present alternatives for effective communication between people beyond language?
After choosing your novel and critical perspective, do the following:
1. Read the related articles on the critical theories prepared by Lois Tyson, available under Resource’s “Research Essay Resources” on iLearn. (Note: there are two articles to consult for both Marxist and feminist theories and only one for deconstructive theory.)
2. Identify terms, concepts, and analytical perspectives from Tyson’s articles that appear as if they will be useful in helping you to answer the question(s) I’ve asked of you. Make notations for specific quotes you might use.
3. Draft a response to the question(s) I’ve provided that both:
i. Meaningfully quotes, paraphrases, and analyzes the novel you’ve chosen.
ii. Briefly but significantly quotes and/or paraphrases parts of Tyson’s articles that help you accurately present and employ the critical perspective you are using.
An effective response to this Research Essay assignment will manage to:
a) Answer the question(s) provided in a thoughtful and engaging manner.
b) Provide a close reading of the text and its language through quotation, paraphrase, & analysis.
c) Demonstrate an understanding of the critical perspective chosen and researched.

Can a woman be criminally prosecuted in Alabama for using illegal drugs while pregnant?

The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with experience writing an amicus brief (a very powerful advocacy tool used in the judicial process). Students will practice using social science and research as evidence in their arguments in support of judicial rulings that promote social and economic justice.
Directions
1. Read through the case overview of the Ankrum v. State of Alabama (2011) case (available at the end of this document).

2. You are a policy analyst for the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). You are working with the NASW legal counsel to complete an amicus brief on this case. You have been asked to help write an amicus brief from this perspective and as if the case were still pending before the Court. The brief should include the following sections: a. Case Headings/Captions – _This is the title page for the brief. It identifies the Court hearing the case; the parties; the date, case number and your name and contact information. This page also indicates that this document is an amicus brief and which party it is in support of.
b. Table of Contents
c. Table of Authorities – _This section simply lists different sources that you will use in support of your argument. Sources can include: laws, previous judicial decisions (i.e. precedents), social science research, journal articles, law review articles, etc. If searching for precedents that were set in previous cases, look for cases that centered on similar issues. However, because you are writing for the NASW, you can rely heavily on social science sources. If using more than one type of source, each type should be grouped together and include a header for each section indicating the source. Please include 8-10 sources.
d. Interest of Amicus Curiae – _This section explains to the Court why your organization (the NASW) is interested in the case. In writing this section, think about the mission, vision and values of the NASW, what a positive outcome would be for this organization and how a positive outcome in this case will support the mission, vision and values of the NASW.

2
e. Summary of Argument – _This section provides a summary for your arguments. It is similar to an executive summary in a report that briefly gives the reader an overview of your arguments.
f. Argument – _In this section, you will present your case for why the Court should make a ruling that is favorable to your position. You will rely on literature to do this. Think broadly about the impact charging or not charging someone criminally when they use illegal drugs while pregnant. For example, what impact w_i_l_l_ _t_h_i_s_ _h_a_v_e_ _o_n_ _w_o_m_e_n_?_ _O_r_ _h_o_w_ _w_i_l_l_ _i_t_ _i_m_p_a_c_t_ _a_ _w_o_m_a_n_’s_ _d_e_c_i_s_i_o_n_ _t_o_ _g_e_t_ _prenatal care or not? Or how will this impact all parties involved? Or what happens if the child dies? Ultimately, you are understanding how this issue is addressed in the literature. Support your argument with the sources listed in the table of authorities. Include 4-6 arguments.
g. Conclusion

Issue
Can a woman be criminally prosecuted in Alabama for using illegal drugs while pregnant?
Facts of the Case
“ ‘On January 31, 2009, the defendant, Hope Ankrom, gave birth to a son, [B.W.], at Medical Center Enterprise. Medical records showed that [Ankrom] tested positive for cocaine prior to giving birth and that the child tested positive for cocaine after birth.
“ ‘Department of Human Resources worker Ashley Arnold became involved and developed a plan for the care of the child. During the investigation [Ankrom] admitted to Ashley that she had used marijuana while she was pregnant but denied using cocaine.
“ ‘Medical records from her doctor show that he documented a substance abuse problem several times during her pregnancy and she had tested positive for cocaine and marijuana on more than one occasion during her pregnancy.’
“On February 18, 2009, Ankrom was arrested and charged with chemical endangerment of a child. On August 25, 2009, the grand jury indicted Ankrom. The indictment stated that Ankrom ‘did knowingly, recklessly, or intentionally cause or permit a child, to-wit: [B.W.], a better description of which is to the Grand Jury otherwise unknown, to be exposed to, to ingest or inhale, or to have contact with a controlled substance, chemical substance, or drug paraphernalia as defined in Section 13A–12–260 of the Code of Alabama, 1975, to-wit: Cocaine, in violation of Section [26–15–3.2(a)(1) ].’
“On September 25, 2009, Ankrom filed a motion styled as a ‘Motion to Dismiss Indictment.’ In that motion, after setting forth the facts, Ankrom argued that ‘[t]he plain language of [§ 26–15–3.2, Ala.Code 1975,] shows that the legislature intended for the statute to apply only to a child, not a fetus’; that ‘courts in other states which have enacted the same or similar chemical endangerment statutes have determined that such statutes do not apply to prenatal conduct that allegedly harms a fetus’; that ‘[t]he state’s contention that the defendant violated this statute renders the law impermissibly vague, and therefore the rule of lenity applies’; that ‘[t]he legislature has previously considered amending the statute to include prenatal conduct that harms a fetus, and declined to do so’; that ‘the defendant has not been accorded due process because there was no notice that her conduct was illegal under this statute’; that ‘[t]he prosecution of pregnant women is a violation of the constitutional guarantee of Equal Protection’; and that ‘[p]rosecution of pregnant, allegedly drug-addicted women is against public policy for numerous moral and ethical reasons.’ The State responded to that motion on October 13, 2009. In the State’s response, it agreed that on January 31, 2009, Ankrom gave birth to a son and that medical records showed that Ankrom tested positive for cocaine immediately prior to giving birth and that the child tested positive for cocaine after birth. Based on that conduct, the State argued that prosecution of Ankrom was proper under § 26–15–3.2, Ala.Code 1975. On October 15, 2009, the trial court denied Ankrom’s motion.
“On April 1, 2010, Ankrom pleaded guilty to a violation of § 26–15–3.2(a)(1), Ala.Code 1975.”
Ankrom v. State, [Ms. CR–09–1148, Aug. 26, 2011] _ So.3d _ (Ala.Crim.App.2011). Ankrom was sentenced to three years in prison, but her sentence was suspended and she was placed on probation for one year. Ankrom, _ So.3d at _.
“Ankrom alleges that the term ‘child’ in § 26–15–3.2, Ala.Code 1975, does not include a viable fetus. The State responds that the plain meaning of the term ‘child,’ as used in the statute, includes an unborn child.”

What parameters/limitations did you use in your search (e.g., peer-reviewed, full text only, published in the last ten years, written in English)?

In this class, we will read much about differentiated instruction from a general point of view. The purpose of this assignment is for you to learn more about the research on differentiated instruction in middle grades social studies. For this assignment, you will identify two peer-reviewed scholarly articles and write a summary/synthesis of those articles. The articles you identify must describe an empirical research study (quantitative or qualitative). Thus, literature reviews, meta-analyses, and practitioner oriented journal articles should not be selected and summarized for this assignment. You should
choose articles that are relevant to your specific teaching field and differentiated instruction. The connecting theme of the two articles will inform your practice in differentiating instruction in your content field. Your micro-literature review should be 2 – 4 pages max (I will stop reading and not grade beyond four pages).
Your article summary should include the following information:
An introduction paragraph that provides background on the topic/theme of the two articles.
A description of how you identified the articles. Describe the process for how you identified the articles so clearly that I could follow your directions and locate the articles myself. Include this information:
What database did you use to conduct your search?
What search terms did you use?
What parameters/limitations did you use in your search (e.g., peer-reviewed, full text only, published in the last ten years, written in English)?
Explain why you selected the two particular articles for your review (quality? relevance?)
A succinct summary of all two articles. For each article, include the following information:
Who were the participants?
What data were collected?
What were the significant findings of the study?
What big takeaways can be made from the study (i.e., did it answer any questions or provide implications for teaching?)?
Each article summary should be an individual paragraph.
Provide a synthesis paragraph, or paragraphs, that describe(s):
consistencies between the two articles inconsistencies
big findings from the studies questions that you still have
how you can integrate the results of this study into your daily practice.
Complete the following table and include it in your paper
The information in each cell should be the bare minimum needed to convey the indicated information
(i.e., don’t write a paragraph when a single sentence will suffice).
For cells that require numerous bits of information (e.g., participants info, major findings), provide a neat bulleted list. (SEE CHART UPLOADED)
BOTH ARTICLES MUST BE FROM UNITED STATES AND BASED ON MIDDLE GRADES SOCIAL
STUDIES
