Critically explain the five commonly accepted psychological phases of disaster responses.

Assignment Phases of Disaster Response

The purpose of this assignment is to examine the psychological phases of disaster response and how these are uniquely experienced by affected individuals and communities. Through the course materials, we have learned that psychologically processing disaster events generally follows a predictable set of phases. Although this is not always the case, these phases are the norm versus the exception in disaster behavioral responses.

For this assignment, briefly explain the five commonly accepted psychological phases of disaster responses. As a reminder, these include (1) the pre-disaster phase, (2) the hero phase, (3) the honeymoon phase, (4) the disillusionment phase, and (5) the reconstruction phase.
After providing a review of the phases noted above, examine individual and community responses to a disaster event of your choice, provide a summary of the psychological phases of disaster response displayed in the example.
Explain, with detail, how the selected phase(s) is appropriate to describe the observed behavior(s) from the example.
Close your work with a discussion of the role of cultural competence during any of the phases of psychological disaster response and how such awareness might affect the actions of behavioral health professionals as psychological first aid (PFA) is implemented.

What details did the patient provide regarding their chief complaint and symptomatology to derive your differential diagnosis?

The Assignment
Develop a Focused SOAP Note, including your differential diagnosis and critical-thinking process to formulate a primary diagnosis. Incorporate the following into your responses in the template:
Subjective: What details did the patient provide regarding their chief complaint and symptomatology to derive your differential diagnosis? What is the duration and severity of their symptoms? How are their symptoms impacting their functioning in life?
** Ensure this is detailed enough to formulate a diagnosis **
Objective: What observations did you make during the psychiatric assessment??
Assessment: Discuss the patient’s mental status examination results. What were your differential diagnoses? Provide a minimum of three possible diagnoses with supporting evidence, listed in order from highest to lowest priority. Compare the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for each differential diagnosis and explain what DSM-5 criteria rules out the differential diagnosis to find an accurate diagnosis. Explain the critical-thinking process that led you to the primary diagnosis you selected. Include pertinent positives and pertinent negatives for the specific patient case.
Plan: What is your plan for psychotherapy? What is your plan for treatment and management, including alternative therapies? Include pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments, alternative therapies, and follow-up parameters as well as a rationale for this treatment and management plan. Also incorporate one health promotion activity and one patient education strategy.
Reflection notes: What would you do differently with this client if you could conduct the session again? Discuss what your next intervention would be if you were able to follow up with this patient.?Also include in your reflection a discussion related to legal/ethical considerations (demonstrate critical thinking beyond confidentiality and consent for treatment!), health promotion, and disease prevention that takes into consideration patient factors (such as age, ethnic group, etc.), PMH, and other risk factors (e.g., socioeconomic, cultural background, etc.).

Post an example of a serial murderer and an example of a mass murderer, and explain why each person in your examples is characterized as a serial murderer or a mass murderer.

Examining the differences between serial and mass murderers always has been challenging. One way to distinguish serial murderers from mass murderers is to examine the number of murders that occur in a given amount of time. For instance, a serial murderer kills at least three victims over an extended period of time, while a mass murderer kills at one point in time. Another way to distinguish between serial murderers and mass murderers is to examine the murderers’ individual characteristics. A crime scene also can provide insight into whether the perpetrator is a serial murderer, a mass murderer, or some other type of killer. Understanding the distinctive features of mass and serial murderers is critical to the success and effectiveness of a criminal profiler.

To prepare for this Discussion:

Review the Course Introduction, located in the navigation bar on the left. Keep this overview in mind as you work through each week of the course.
Review the book excerpt, “Defining Multiple Murder.” Reflect on what distinguishes serial murderers from mass murderers.
Review the article, “Understanding Mass Murder: A Starting Point.” Focus on the differences between serial and mass murders. In addition, consider the characteristics and typologies of the various mass murderers.
Review Chapter 2 of your course text, Profiling Violent Crimes: An Investigative Tool. Pay particular attention to the case studies of Richard Kuklinski and Dennis Rader (the BTK Strangler). Focus on the factors, especially the number of victims and the time between killings, which separate serial murderers from mass murderers.
Review the stories of at least two serial killers on the Biography website. Become familiar with the details of the crimes.
Select an example each of a serial murderer and a mass murderer. These examples can be ones you read about this week or ones you create based on the readings.
Reflect on the examples you selected and think about why each is a serial or mass murderer.
With these thoughts in mind:

By Day 4

Post an example of a serial murderer and an example of a mass murderer, and explain why each person in your examples is characterized as a serial murderer or a mass murderer. That is, explain how the crimes they committed and their motivations to commit the crimes characterize each of them as a serial murderer or a mass murderer.

Note: In this Discussion, feel free to “create” your own serial murderer and mass murderer. You may or may not choose to use examples of real-life offenders. You can use all the readings to “construct” what you would consider a prototypical serial murderer and a prototypical mass murderer.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources.

Should there be a standardized approach when it comes to digital forensics?

Each student will find a current event that relates to the material we are discussing in class for the week. Current events include newspaper articles or any other suggestions proposed by the students. (please send me an email message with any questions) Students will conduct a one page write-up and submit it under this Assignment link.
Students need to clarify which current event they choose and also attach a copy of it along with their one-page assignment.
Some options attached.
– This will allow for students to stay up to date on current issues involving the technology and the criminal justice system and discuss with their peers their thoughts on the article.
Pick a current event of your choice or any of the options on the attached file, and answer the below questions utilizing the writing guidelines in your syllabus.

Explain the significance of confidentiality in ethical psychological practice, as it applies to the case above.

Confidentiality is one of the ethical imperatives that is held in the highest regard by psychologists and clients. Safeguarding information disclosed to psychologists during the course of a professional relationship is something both clients and psychologists alike expect. It is a fundamental building block of the trust needed between psychologist and client. This expectation crosses many types of psychological interventions, including (but not limited to) interpersonal therapy; assessment of children, individuals, and couples; and research with human subjects. Confidentiality is expected in both public and private professional settings and interactions.
Despite such protections of confidential client information, there has been a persistent weakening of these same rights, especially subsequent to the September 11, 2001 destruction of the World Trade Center towers in New York City. The passion for privacy needed to be balanced by the right to protect one’s homeland and life (Safire, 2004, p. A27). Safire observed that patients could no longer expect that their mental health histories would remain confidential. This, however, was true prior to September 11, 2001. Clients have long been forced to waive their right to privacy when utilizing insurance to pay for their mental health treatment, which routinely requires transmission to the insurer of client diagnosis, prognosis, and aspects of history. There also are other exceptions that have existed before 2001 and include the following: the legal mandate to report both child and elder abuse/neglect; the legal requirement to warn specified others of a client’s intent to harm; the legal requirement to cooperate in providing records for which a psychologist has received a court order; the requirement to provide information to an employer who has hired a psychologist to assess a client for “fitness for duty” or some other reason (and similarly providing information to the courts from court mandated assessments).
For your first research paper, you explore the significance of confidentiality in ethics as it applies specifically to the following case. Zora, the client in question in the case, is a member of the Thompson family presented in the Week 1 media.
Zora is a 14-year-old, multi-ethnic (African American, Columbian, and Mexican) female who appears older than her stated age. She is abusing marijuana, Percocet, and Oxycontin. In defiance of her parents, she is dating Caucasian college-age boys (which her parents do not know about) and has become pregnant. She seeks counseling at a clinic for teenagers to think through how she wants to proceed. She is unsure if she wants to get an abortion, have the baby and give it up for adoption, or have the baby and join the “pregnant and parenting” services at her school. She hopes to gain clarity about what she wants before she possibly involves her family. The psychologist whom she sees at the clinic is a middle aged, Caucasian woman who is Catholic and who feels conflicted about counseling a 14-year-old who is considering an abortion. The psychologist seeks peer supervision to help her decide how she should ethically proceed. In the peer supervision group is an African American psychologist who happens to know Zora and her family, and figures out from the psychologist’s descriiption that the client is Zora. She is shocked that Zora is pregnant and is very concerned. She wants to talk with Zora, but Zora is not her client and this information was relayed in peer supervision, which is a confidential setting. This psychologist is a close friend of Zora’s mother. She feels extremely conflicted as to what she should ethically do.
To prepare for this Assignment, consider the significance of confidentiality to the above case as you explore the conflicting ethical considerations at play. Consider how your own feelings, beliefs, attitudes, and cultural perspectives might influence how you conceptualize this case and include a brief self reflection on this in your paper.
The Assignment (3–5 pages)
1. Explain the significance of confidentiality in ethical psychological practice, as it applies to the case above.
2. Explain how your feelings, beliefs, attitudes, and cultural perspectives might influence how you conceptualize this case.
3. Support your explanation with at least two peer-reviewed journal articles on confidentiality from the Learning Resources to support your points. Use correct APA-style format for your paper.
