Medicines Management and Applied Physiology for Mental Health Nursing.

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1- Evaluate the action of medication in relation to the management of acute and chronic conditions.

2- Analyse the bio-science that underpins the principles and skills for safe prescribing and administration of medication for people experiencing mental distress.

3- Demonstrate a critical awareness of evidence-based strategies to promote person-centered care in relation to medication concordance and shared decision-making.

4- Analyse appropriate evidence-based strategies to proactively manage and prevent adverse events within medication management in people experiencing mental distress.

The exam will focus on a case study, and you will be asked to critically explore the diagnosis (relating this to ICD-10), and show an understanding of the possible medication options, and monitoring for side effects, adverse reactions, and effectiveness of the medication. You will have 6 questions to answer. We would expect you to write about 2000 words overall, 300-350 words per question. You may

find that you use slightly more words on some questions than on others.

You will need to refer to NICE Guidelines, the BNF, and SPC and Maudsley Prescribing Guidelines for this – all of which are available online.

You will need to show an understanding of the relevant bioscience by discussing the pharmacological actions of the medications and the reasons for side effects.

You may also be asked to consider issues relating to consent and concordance and will need to be prepared to show an understanding of the Mental Health Act and the Mental Capacity Act.

The case study will include areas for you to evaluate. There may be issues with diagnosis and prescribed medication which you will need to identify. You may not think that the prescription in the case study matches current NICE guidance. Please use resources to support your answers.

You may also be asked to suggest relevant health promotion to go alongside medication.

Your work will be assessed using level 6 criteria which is available on your feedback sheet and below.

The questions are designed so that you can demonstrate the ability to interpret and act upon the information that you have as well as demonstrate that you have appropriate underpinning knowledge (see the marking criteria for more information).

The questions will ask you to relate the knowledge you have gained throughout the module to nursing practice.

Explain how the pollutant is introduced and transferred throughout the environment.

Research an environmental pollutant, and compose a scholarly activity response that discusses the following aspects of the pollutant:

Identify the pollutant.
Discuss how this substance is produced and how it is used.
Explain how the pollutant is introduced and transferred throughout the environment.
Discuss the negative effect the pollutant has on the environment.
Provide two examples of the negative effects of the pollutant on the environment discussed in two peer-reviewed research articles.
Discuss how the negative effects of the pollutant on the environment impacts humans.
The scholarly activity response should be at least two pages in length, not counting the title and reference pages. Adhere to APA Style when constructing this assignment, including in-text citations and references for all sources that are used. Please note that no abstract is needed. You should use at least three resources.

If the animals on the life raft are actually symbolic of parts of Pi’s personality or his emotions, what is each of the animals symbolic of?

Consider: How are animals used symbolically in different stories / cultures? What figurative language in the novel is used to describe the animals and how might it reveal potential symbolism? What benefit might it serve for the person going through a tragedy to turn to use symbolism to cope with their circumstance? Draw from the text, as well as outside research to develop a six-paragraph essay. Make sure you have planned your essay out prior to writing it.

Microeconomics: Sketch the indifference curves and the initial allocation on an appropriate diagram. In your diagram identify the area where there is scope for a Pareto improvement and explain why this is the case.

Candidates must attempt ALL questions
Question 1

Consider a pure exchange economy with two consumption goods, X and Y, and two consumers, A and B. There are 20 units of X and 20 units of Y in the economy. The preferences of the consumers are represented by the following utility functions:

𝑈𝐴 (𝑋𝐴𝑌𝐴 ) = 𝑋𝐴 + 2𝑌𝐴

𝑈𝐵 (𝑋𝐵𝑌𝐵 ) = 3(𝑋𝐵)2 𝑌𝑩

a. Suppose that initially consumer A has 10 units of X and 10 units of Y, while consumer B has all the remaining units of the two goods. Is this allocation Pareto efficient? [7 marks]

b. Sketch the indifference curves and the initial allocation on an appropriate diagram. In your diagram identify the area where there is scope for a Pareto improvement and explain why this is the case. [8 marks]

c. Now suppose initially A has all the available units of X and B has all the units of good Y. The price of X is 1 and the price of good Y is 1 as well. Write down expressions for the budget constraints for A and B. How much X and Y will be demanded at these prices? Do these prices and quantities form a general competitive equilibrium?
[10 marks]
[25 Marks]

Question 2

Suppose the inverse demand for a good is given by P = 30 – 2Q, where Q is the total quantity supplied by all firms in the market. Suppose any firm in the market has a constant marginal cost of 14.

a. Assume the market consists of two firms that set their quantities simultaneously. Calculate the duopoly levels of production and the equilibrium price. [7 marks]

b. Now assume firm 1 chooses its production level before firm 2 does. What will be the equilibrium quantities, price and profits in this case? [10 marks]

c. Now suppose that if firm 2 wishes to enter the market then it has to pay a fixed cost of 4. If firm 1 (who again is the first mover) chooses to produce a quantity q1 = 6, what will be firm 2’s profit? What conclusions can you draw concerning firm 2’s entrance decision and firm 1’s profit? [8 marks]
[25 Marks]

Question 3
Suppose the government is considering the provision of traffic lights at three different locations, denoted 1, 2 and ach traffic light costs $600 to install. There are three individuals (A, B, and C). If a traffic light is installed all individuals will be taxed equally to pay for the costs and this information is known to the individuals. The decision whether to install each individual traffic light is taken on the basis of a majority vote; and, for each individual, if the individual’s valuation is greater than or equal to the cost to them then they would vote in favour of provision. The table below gives the value that each individual places on installing a traffic light at each of the locations:
Location Individual A Individual B Individual C
1 170 150 300
2 220 250 180
3 150 220 220

a. Explain which traffic lights will be installed, and whether the outcomes are efficient. [9 marks]

b. Explain for each of the three locations what decisions would be made using a Clark-Groves mechanism, how much each individual would pay and how much revenue would be raised towards the cost. To ease your calculations, you can use a calculator or a computing software such as Excel. [10 marks]

c. What is the main disadvantage of the yes-no majority vote system and what is the main advantage of the Clark-Groves mechanism? [6 marks]

[25 Marks]

Question 4
a. Explain both formally and intuitively, why economic theory predicts that the prices of exhaustible resources rise at the rate of interest. (15 marks)
b. What factors may prevent this from occurring in the real world? How would such factors impact price growth? (10 marks)
[25 Marks]

Profit, loss, breakeven volume calculations

Imagine you are the CEO of Fun & Games plc, a company engaged in the manufacture of children’s toys.

A report shown to you by the chief operational officer contains the data shown in Table 3.

Table 3 Cost data

Data £
Sales price per unit 32.00
Variable costs per unit:
Direct materials costs 12.00
Direct labour costs 6.00
Variable support costs 2.00
Fixed costs per month 9,000

The company currently sells 3000 stuffed toys each month. The marketing director has always believed that “increasing the sales price per unit by 10% will simply cause a 10% drop in demand and so it’s not worth increasing prices”.

  • Produce a statement showing the current monthly profit or loss.

(20 marks)

  • What is the current breakeven volume?

(5 marks)

  • Assuming that the marketing director assumptions on price and demand are correct produce a statement showing the profit or loss if the company were to increase its sales price per unit by 10% (and so loses 10% of volume of demand). Is the marketing director correct that it makes no difference?

(15 marks)

Show all workings.

Word limits have not been set as your answers are quantitative in nature, requiring calculations but very few words. In other words, be as brief as possible in your written answers to questions a, b, c.

Discuss how you intend to construct the items, cognizant of the basic principles of item pool construction, the necessity of SMEs, the unidimensionality or multidimensionality of the construct,

For this task, complete the readings for this assignment, and then write a paper in which you complete the following:
Write an introduction that examines the construct, its conceptual definition/s, and related concepts.
Review the literature and the existing tools that measure the construct.
Provide justification for your original scale.
Discuss how you intend to construct the items, cognizant of the basic principles of item pool construction, the necessity of SMEs, the unidimensionality or multidimensionality of the construct, etc.
Write at least 20 sample items that represent the construct you are planning to measure. You may construct negatively-worded items, but indicate these in a chart or table. If the construct you choose has two or more dimensions under it, write sample items indicating which items fall under which
dimension. (See for example, the Life Position Scale that contained four dimensions I’m OK etc. at first, but after factor analysis the dimensions reduced to two—I and You.)
Argue for a specific method of running an item analysis procedure.
Argue for at least two specific methods of establishing your scale’s validity (Choose at least one method for construct validity, and another method for criterion-related validity. In criterion validation, it is not enough to simply write that you are planning to employ the method. Be sure to specify the
variable(s) you will correlate your scale with.
Length: 10-15 pages
Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.

You should address all the elements of the assignment task listed below. Please note that tutors will use the assessment criteria set out
below in assessing your work.
Maximum word count: 5,000
Please note that exceeding the word count by over 10% will result in a reduction in grade by the same percentage that the word count is exceeded.
Assignment Task
For this assignment, you are required to conduct your own piece of quantitative research (an experimental study). You design your own true experiment on a topic in cognitive psychology using the cognitive psychology approach. A true experiment is one where participants can be randomly allocated to different experimental conditions. The exception to
the true experiment is only for within-subjects factors. It must be a 2×2 factorial design (i.e. have two independent variables) and one dependent variable. You should analyse the data using appropriate statistical techniques in SPSS and write a 5,000-word report using the report writing conventions of the APA.
Please follow these steps:
2. The study needs to be well supported by literature published since 2000.
3. You need to identify two independent variables and one dependent variable in order to satisfy the 2×2 factorial design. Please refer to the Research Methods module for the design (and data analysis).
4. *As 3 example reports are made available, your design cannot employ the same independent variables as in those examples. Example 1: memory of words with IV1 (distinctive vs similarity processing) and IV2 (immediate vs no recall). Example 2:
memory with IV1 (black/white vs colour) and IV2 (picture vs word). Example 3:
memory with IV1 (deep vs shallow processing) and IV2 (music vs no music). All
these six factors (IVs) are to be excluded from your own research design.
5. You can use any appropriate method for delivering the materials, PowerPoint, paper and pencil, or even experiment generator software available through the Virtual Psychology Lab, such as OpenSesame, PsyTools and SuperLab, but make sure you have the skills required to learn quickly otherwise your project will quickly become unmanageable. Please contact the IT technicians for any support that can be provided on such software.
7. To keep track of the study design, it is important to note the following while the work is in progress:
(i) Aim, rationale and hypotheses (main and interaction effects) of the study
(ii) What literature your study is based on?
(iii) Independent variable 1: Name and Levels
(iv) Independent variable 2: Name and Levels
(v) Dependent variable: Name and measurement
(vi) Instruments/Materials used for the experiment
(vii) Participant information
This important information will help you write the various sections of the report.
8. One of the learning outcomes of this module is to understand ethical issues and how they are assessed. So, once you are ready with your design (and words) and you have identified who your participants are going to be, please complete a Student Research Proposal Form which will be used to assess the ethical issues and provide ethical approval for your study. It is expected that there will be no ethical issues but you do need to complete the form to determine whether your experiment does have ethical issues and how you might deal with them.
You should not, under any circumstances, begin recruiting until you receive
ethical approval. A zero mark will be awarded for non-approved research.
9. Please submit your Student Research Proposal Form to your module tutor by the Date – done
10. You are required to supply the raw data collected (for each participant and condition) in a clear and suitable table in an appendix. Failure to do so will lead to a failed mark.
11. You are required to analyse the data in SPSS and to include SPSS print-outs
(outputs) of your analysis as an appendix. Failure to do so will lead to a failed mark.
12. The suggested word allocation of the report is
a. Abstract 150 words
b. Introduction 2,000 words
c. Method 400 words
d. Results 250 words
e. Discussion 2,200 words
This does not need to be strictly adhered to but your report should NOT exceed 5,000 words
Guidelines
You MUST underpin your analysis and evaluation of the key issues with appropriate and wide ranging academic research and ensure this is referenced using the APA system. The Additional notes:
Students are required to indicate the exact word count on the title page of the assessment.
The word count excludes the title page, tables, figures, diagrams, footnotes, reference list and appendices. Where assessment questions have been reprinted from the assessment brief these will also be excluded from the word count. ALL other printed words ARE included in the word count. See ‘Word Count Policy’ on the homepage of this module for more information.

Experiment chosen is number 4
This experiment has been designed to investigate the picture superiority effect and affective valence of words on free recall. Participants are shown positively rated and neutral items presented as either words or pictures. The positive and neutral words were relatively matched on arousal and were selected from the Affective Norms for English Words (ANEW) database (Bradley & Lang, 1999). The images were selected from a combination of PowerPoint icons and images from Pixabay.com and were chosen to be similar silhouette-style images with very little distinctiveness. The number of stimuli included was based on Ferré (2015).
