Has the pandemic led to a decline in the number of customers and sales in the restaurant industry in the UK?

Background
The first case of COVID-19 was reported in Wuhan, China, in later 2019, it could not be anticipated how quickly it would spread to the rest of the world and result in a pandemic, leading to devastating effects in the coming years. In March 2020, the World Health Organisation proclaimed the virus a universal pandemic, and the announcement had distressing effects on each sector of the world economy as nations took radical action to contain its spread (Vig and Agarwal, 2021). The confusion and anxiety that followed the declaration affected every facet of life. This study seeks to assess the effects of COVID-19 on the UK hospitality industry, specifically the restaurant segment, which was adversely affected following containment measures to counter the spread of the virus.
1.2. Effect of COVID-19 on the Hospitality Industry
The lockdowns on cities have affected labour mobility, slowed down economic activities, and affected consumption in the UK hospitality industry (Memon et al., 2021). This statement is evidenced by data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which shows that consumer spending was 70% lower than in the pre-pandemic period. The decline in consumer spending was highest in spring 2020, and the figures have not returned to the pre-pandemic level. The ONS further shows that the value of payment to suppliers for food and drink business was 51% of the pre-pandemic period, with the hotel and holiday accommodation experiencing a 72% drop from the pre-pandemic period (ONS, 2021). The hospitality industry was affected most following restrictions on social gathering, movement, and social distance (Panzone, Larcom, and She, 2021).
1.3. Statement of the Problem
The hospitality industry was substantially affected by the pandemic as people could not move freely, had to maintain social distancing, and could not interact face-to-face or dine out. For example, Hooker (2021) shows that 10.2% of restaurants discontinued their operations in the period between March 2020 and April 2021. Although the number of restaurants in operation is currently still high, sales volumes have declined as fewer customers visit restaurants (Panzone, Larcom, and She, 2021; Vig and Agarwal, 2021). Despite such negative outcomes, few empirical studies have focused on the direct and indirect impacts of the pandemic on restaurants. The current study aims to fill this gap by investigating the effects of COVID-19 on the UK hospitality industry, with a particular focus on restaurants.
1.3. Aim
The aim of the research is to assess the effects of COVID-19 on the UK hospitality industry.
1.4. Objectives
• To determine the effects of COVID-19 on the number of customers visiting restaurants.
• To explore the effect of the pandemic on revenues generated by restaurants.
• To establish the effects of the pandemic on employment in the UK restaurants.
• To provide some recommendations for organisations in the hospitality industry to tackle difficulties by potential interruptions/pandemics in the future.
1.5. Research Questions
i. Has the pandemic led to a decline in the number of customers and sales in the restaurant industry in the UK?
ii. How has employment in the restaurant sector changed due to the pandemic?

Discuss, in your own words, why the Court of Final Appeal decided that the company had committed the said offence

Read HKSAR v Special View Ltd (2018) 21 HKCFAR 562 which can be found in the Westlaw Asia website of our library database in which there is a summary of what the court said (as for how to find court cases from the website, see course materials topic 1).

In this case, a company was convicted of causing or permitting a raft to remain in a fish culture zone without having a valid license contrary to section 13(2) of the Marine Fish Culture Ordinance (Cap 353 of the Laws of Hong Kong). The company did not apply for renewal of the license to culture marine fish by the deadline specified in the license for making a renewal of license application. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department of the Hong Kong SAR government subsequently cancelled the license before its expiry. The company then appealed against the cancellation decision of the government. The appeal was made within the statutory period allowed for making appeals against cancellation decisions but after the license had expired. The issue was whether the company committed the offence when the relevant raft remained in the fish culture zone during the appeal period but after the license had expired.

Discuss, in your own words, why the Court of Final Appeal decided that the company had committed the said offence. Did the Court of Final Appeal adopt the literal rule or the purposive rule of statutory interpretation (or, both approaches) in arriving at this decision?

For more on statutory interpretation in Hong Kong, read Medical Council of Hong Kong v Chow Siu Shek (2000) 3 HKCFAR 144 (p.152 – the beginning lines of p.154 before the discussion on ‘The provisions to be interpreted in the present case’) and Town Planning Board v Society for the Protection of the Harbour Ltd [2004] 1 HKLRD 396 (paras.28-29) (both cases can be found in the Westlaw Asia website).

What are some of the reasons that you think are behind deviance in today’s society?

Theories of Deviance: Interview Analysis

Not everyone agrees about why some people break rules while others follow them. Now that you have learned some of the main theories of deviance, you are ready to put your sociological perspective in gear and find out what other people’s views are on this topic.

The Unit 6 Assignment has two parts. Part 1 is to conduct two brief interviews. Part 2 is to apply the theory of deviance that you think best describes each respondent’s views on why deviance occurs and how it could be prevented.

Part 1: Interview two people to learn what they think are the main causes of deviance (not just crime, but all rule breaking) in the U.S. society today. Also, ask respondents for their ideas about the remedy for deviance.

These two questions might be helpful to structure your interview. Remember, this is a brief interview, not an in-depth investigation into your respondents’ views.

What are some of the reasons that you think are behind deviance in today’s society?HINT: Be prepared to explain the difference between deviance and crime, but be sure to tell the respondent that you are interested in all rule-breaking, not just criminal acts.
What do you think are some effective ways to prevent people from breaking society’s rules?HINT: Encourage the respondent to think about juvenile and adult deviance as they answer this question

Using CogLab, perform the blind spot experiment and create a report on the experiment

Using CogLab, perform the blind spot experiment and create a report on the experiment.

In your r e port, write a brief introduction that explains the various causes of blind spot.

Next, in the Methods section, describe the process that you followed to complete the experiment. Make sure to include enough information so that others can also perform the same experiment successfully.

Were the results in accordance with your expectations? Provide a rationale to support your answer.
Did anything about the experiment surprise you? If yes, what?
What factors can influence the results of the blind spot experiment?

What specific developments and transformations between the two periods can you recognize and describe based on your analysis of the two pieces of music?

During the Classical Period, as music evolved in style and form, so did instrumentation. The sounds of the harpsichord were increasingly replaced by the piano and composers embraced a more natural and balanced approach to music.

Compare and contrast two pieces of music within the same style and genre: one that is composed by Johann Sebastian Bach or George Frideric Handel (during the Baroque Period) to one that is composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or Franz Joseph Haydn (during the Classical Period).

What similarities and/or differences do you hear within the form, melody, harmony, rhythm, lyrics, etc. of each piece? What specific developments and transformations between the two periods can you recognize and describe based on your analysis of the two pieces of music? What is the difference between the compositional approach and instrumentation of each piece? Which compositional approach do you enjoy more and why?
