economic, corporate, environmental, cultural and political forces maintaining the status

quo? Who is affected by it? What is the size and scope of the impact? What is the

relationship of this challenge to other areas of concern or opportunity? Draw on readings

Solution Mapping: Who is already working to solve this problem? What

are they doing? What efforts have been tried or are being tried and what are the

different models/approaches? What has worked, what hasn’t? How are some of these

efforts linked to one another? What networks & resources exist that could further the

solutions landscape? What has happened in the past, and what could happen in the

future? Draw on readings and lectures in formulating your answers. (3 pages)

Impact Gaps: What is missing from the solutions landscape? Consider policy changes,

information sharing/behavior change efforts, movement building, research, market

opportunities, missing links, or other actionable responses. What role do you see for

future private, public, and social sector interventions or collaborations? What are the

lessons you have learned from researching this issue? Where were your assumptions

challenged? If you had more time, what would you research next? Draw on readings and

lectures in formulating your answers

Hannah Arendt writes in her section on “totalitarianism in power” the following: “These groups [masses of Jews and Russians], innocent in every sense, are the most suitable for thorough experimentation in disenfranchisement and destruction of the juridical person, and therefore they are both qualitatively and quantitatively the most essential category of the camp population. This principle was most fully realized in the gas chambers which, if only because of their enormous capacity, could not be intended for individual cases but only for people in general” (The Origins of Totalitarianism, ch. 12, p. 449). This question has two parts: First, please explain and evaluate this quote by Arendt in the context of her concluding chapters on totalitarianism. Second, what is the significance of treating “people in general” versus treating people as “individuals”? In answering this part of the question, please make reference to other primary and secondary works we have read in which this issue arises (including, for instance, Dan Stone’s history of concentration camps).

Discussion: Screening and Assessment Tools
What is important to know and when is it important to know it? To intervene in a problem, a social worker must first identify the problem. Screening and initial assessment can be useful to identity individuals who may be experiencing mental health concerns and could benefit from seeing a clinical social worker. This then would lead to a more comprehensive assessment from which a treatment plan is built. However, deciding who to assess, when, and using which tools can feel like a confusing process. For example, should you provide depression screenings in the community to people who are not clients? Should you screen all new clients for substance abuse regardless of presenting problem? Should you ask about suicide in every session or only when it feels like it could be a concern?
