Paragraph Structure and Organization: 5/10–Be sure that you use direct quotes as your evidence. Also, can you establish your disciplinary perspectives more clearly in your topic sentences? (Especially in paragraphs 2 and 3.) Use of Research: 10/10–Good use of APA! Style and Mechanics: 10/10–Strong written technique and academic style. Analyze your frequencies and write down a theme or pattern that you see in your data.

Paper details:

Before you present your results for Project 1, read Chapter 8 Elementary Quantitative Data Analysis. Now that you have designed your research survey, you are ready to collect data from 5 people. You will use a convenience sample since you are students and limited to people that you know. While a convenience sample is biased and cannot be used to generalize to the larger population, it makes sense for you to pre-test your questionnaire with people you know (or a small subset of your target group) as an initial step in your quantitative research. This way, you will pre-determine problems with your questionnaire prior to attempting to gather data from a larger sample. Project 1 will be submitted through canvas. Please prepare your report for FlavorKing’s Board of Directors. Include in your report answers to the following questions. Determine your convenience sample. Who will you use to respond to your questionnaire? How come? You want to sell to FlavorKing how come your small sample is a good pre-test and will provide helpful information to them. (It will be helpful to have some people who share similar demographic characteristics, but have some variation. Too much variation makes it difficult to see any patterns. Normally, quantitative work does not use a convenience sample because you want your work to be generalizable to the entire population. You will only use a convenience sample because this is a class project.) What method (in person, email, phone, etc.) will you use to deliver your survey? How come? You will sell FlavorKing on why your method of delivery is important. Gather your data. Ask 5 people to complete your survey and tally their responses. (Remember to have some people who share similar demographic characteristics. If you have too much variation, you may not see any themes/patterns.) Explain to FlavorKing’s Board which questions need to be fixed and/or changed because they are too difficult for respondents to answer or they do not provide any information to help the company? Provide to the Board of Directors either questions that have been re phrased so that they are clear or a different question that might work better. It is important that you show the Board that you have critical thinking skills. Provide a frequency of your data (raw numbers, no percentages) to the Board of Directors for your pre-test results. If you can do so easily create a table. You will likely impress them with a table because it looks scientific! If you cannot create a table, find a “scientific” way to present your frequencies. Use chapter 8 for guidance. Analyze your frequencies and write down a theme or pattern that you see in your data. You may want to group people by certain demographic characteristics like age (12-13 year old in comparison to 8-9 year old or by gender, race, or social-class.). You will look at how your independent variables within different demographic groups might affect the extent to which people in your small sample eat plant-based food. This type of comparison is a cross-tabulation. You will need to let FlavorKing’s Executive Board know your initial findings based on your pre-test. Provide an explanation for them why you think this theme and/or pattern is important for them to consider. More importantly, explain to them why this pattern needs to be studied on a larger sample! Please turn in your questionnaire as well as your responses to the questions above. The Board of Directors at FlavorKing are very excited to see your results. Submit Project 1. Provide your questionnaire and responses to the questions I asked above.

Is rule consequentialism or act consequentialism preferable?
Topic: The Ideal Account of Consequentialism

Paper details:

Format: 8-10 pages (this does NOT include your cover page or your bibliography). Papers should be double spaced, standard margins, 12 PT Times New Roman font. Don’t forget to CITE your sources throughout the paper. WHEN IN DOUBT, CITE! Prompt: In this paper, you will describe what you think is the ideal account of consequentialism. You should answer these questions (please write your paper in the form of a standard paper/essay, i.e., don’t number your answers/don’t answer the questions like you’re writing an essay exam with multiple questions.): (1) Is rule consequentialism or act consequentialism preferable? If you think act consequentialism is preferable, answer these two questions: is maximizing, satisficing, or scalar consequentialism preferable? Is actual or expected consequentialism preferable? If you think rule consequentialism is preferable, answer this question: is it conformity with rules or internalization of rules that matter? (2) What do you think is “the good”? (E.g., is it pleasure, is it satisfied preferences, satisfied desires, or is it some “objective list” that includes things like relationships, knowledge, etc.?). (3) Is agent-neutral consequentialism or agent relative-consequentialism preferable? (4) Keeping in mind what you answered in response to the above three questions, answer this: what is the criterion of right action, according to your account of consequentialism? Be as specific as possible. [Your answer to this question should be just ONE sentence long. It should begin with something like this: “According to my account of consequentialism, rights acts are those that…” (5) What moral principle should be used as a decision procedure? (If your decision procedure principle is different from your principle of right action, explain why. If it’s the same, explain why.) After you put forth your ideal version of consequentialism, then answer this: (6) What does your account of consequentialism imply about the moral treatment of farmed animals? Does it imply that all farming should be abolished? Just Factory farms? No farms? (7) What is the best possible objection to your account of consequentialism? Play devil’s advocate and think of the best objection. Don’t just consider and respond to an obviously bad objection! (8) What is the best response to that objection? In all of your answers, you should define key terms. Pretend that you are writing your paper for someone who doesn’t know much about consequentialism. For instance, when talking about rule consequentialism, define it. If you talk about preferences, define them. In answering questions 1-5, you should do your best to defend your positions and explain why you took the position you did, perhaps by showing why the major alternatives are problematic. For instance, if you think act consequentialism is preferable to rule utilitarianism, you should say something about why rule consequentialism is (more) problematic. Sources/Materials: When relevant, you should draw on course sources. If you don’t engage with the course readings, I will deduct at least 5 points from your final grade. That being said, you are welcome to engage outside sources, but course readings should be given priority. For this assignment, you are just defending what you think is the best version of consequentialism—and it’s possible that the best version of consequentialihkzsm is still a deficient theory!

Is there such a thing as “objective human nature” that extends past a merely physical definition of human beings as the specific sort of carbon-based lifeforms that we are?

Further, if there is no such thing as human nature in this sense, what do we put in place of a theory of human nature in order to attempt to explain the various things human beinhkzgs do, say, believe, and ultimately are.
