Examining the History and Aims of Science

Philosophy

Level 6 Philosophy dissertation. Standard dissertation structure. Want to keep it simple and straightforward, focusing on scientifically advanced civilisations and cultures throughout history, as well as major periods of scientific advancement. So mainly Ancient Greece and China, Galileo/Copernicus, The Enlightenment Period, and Modern (20th/21st Century) science. Focusing on significant technologies and medicines from the times, discussing their purposes, merit, reasons for coming about, and potential motivating factors e.g. economic or social or both. Also, it should consider if there is a universal driving force behind the pursuit of science as a species and/or civilisation, or instead if there are a variety of different reasons for pursuing scientific advancement. With this we may be able to notice a pattern or trend that makes science more understandable and relatable in some way for everyone that encounters and experiences it in everyday life.

TASK:

Find and select a data set for a de-identified student whom you will teach during your practical placement. You should collect and consider primary sources, eg student work, and secondary sources such as test results, observations, on-entry assessments, teacher notes, reports, visual diaries: a wide range of data that is appropriate and relevant to the context and phase of learning.

Analyse the data provided and consider what educational responses are required in order to impact upon the student’s learning.

Design an individual learning plan and present it in the form of a report (headings can be used). Your report will contain:

a clear learner profile;

key data considered and why;

how the data has been interpreted and the learning implications of that interpretation;

your proposed plan for the student, and what evidence of learning you will gather.

You must show how your plan has been derived from your readings and research to be educationally sound. Use APA 7th edition referencing conventions.

When you have completed your report, it must be viewed by your school experience mentor teacher or supervisor and their feedback included in your submission (you are responsible for recording and writing up the feedback). [Please note this is optional, it may be difficult to fulfil this requirement given time constraints]

Feedback must comment on:

quality of data source/s used;

interpretation of the data;

how well your learning plan addresses identified needs.

What you will submit:

Your report with key headings

Provide An explanation of the 3 applicable models, strategies to use, and the cost benefit of each model
Management You have been given the task of increasing the workforce in the organizational development (OD) department. Part of this task is the onboarding process and the standardization of the methods and processes that are used to intervene when it is appropriate and necessary. One of the first things you will need to do is go back and refresh yourself about all of the possible models, strategies, and specific steps that would make sense in this environment and in the current business situation of the company. Determine the estimated cost of the onboarding process. What are cost-effective ways to build an onboarding program that prepares employees for their new work experiences and prepares them for embracing change? The people are used to change, and there is not much resistance with change efforts as long as the people understand what it is, why it is being done, and how they fit into the change. Your vice president (VP) has asked for you to give her a proposal on what your actions will be to become successful in this new role with this high-level task. Your proposal must include the following: An explanation of the 3 applicable models, strategies to use, and the cost benefit of each model Definitions of these models and strategies (taking caution to use the proper terminology) A cost comparison of the potential improvements your client could expect by using the models and strategies that you are recommending An explanation of at least 5 specific recommended steps that can be taken in the present situation described by creating a pros and cons analysis, objectively reviewing each item in the recommendation A brief outline of an action plan that could serve as a template for future action plans, including who in the organization would be responsible, how long it would take to implement each item, and the potential cost for each

Summative Assessment

Methodological Report – 2000 Word Limit

The Research Methods module has now outlined different approaches to data analysis, including a range of methods or techniques used by academics and practitioners when conducting business research. We have learnt that there are different choices to make in research and that the suitability of our analytical techniques is determined by our assumptions and the current state of knowledge around our research question. We have also learnt that no data is perfect, and all methodologies and methods have merits and limitations.

In this assignment you are required to demonstrate your understanding of the appropriateness and suitability of data analysis techniques, by justifying, applying and critically evaluating one of the data analysis techniques you have learned on the module to a given research topic and data set (see below).

Your work should be fully referenced, using appropriate literature sources, drawing from module materials and core readings, and supplemented by your own wider reading.

In completing your report, you should:

  • Use data from an approved source (i.e. the tutor designated transcripts or dataset)
  • Show evidence of the application of your technique to reach your preliminary results or findings
  • Critically review the relevance or suitability of the technique to the research question

Further guidance will be supplied to students on their specified question and data set according to their subject specialist pathway. Students were allocated to their pathway at the beginning of term according to their degree programme:

Lab: Thermal Energy and Friction

Physics

Introduction

The mechanical energy of a mass is the sum of the kinetic energy that the mass has because of

its motion, and the potential energy it has because of its location. When friction acts on a mass,

the friction takes away mechanical energy. We can imagine that the energy is still there – in the

motion of the atoms of the environment and the mass itself. But this energy is no longer readily

available to do work. We can only detect this energy by a rise in temperature. That is why the

energy friction “steals” is often called thermal energy.

In this lab you will look at a simulated motion – a ball rolling on a parabolic track. You will

investigate how much thermal energy is removed by friction as the ball rolls on the track.

Ethical Behavior of Business Students at Bo Diddley Tech

Business

During the global recession of 2008 and 2009, there were many accusations of unethical behavior by Wall Street executives, financial managers, and other corporate officers. At that time, an article appeared that suggested that part of the reason for such unethical business behavior may have stemmed from the fact that cheating had become more prevalent among business students, according to a February 10, 2009, article in the Chronicle of Higher Education. The article reported that 56% of business students admitted to cheating at some time during their academic career as compared to 47% of nonbusiness students.

Cheating has been a concern of the dean of the College of Business (COB) at Bo Diddley Tech (BDT) for several years. Some faculty members believe that cheating is more widespread at BDT than at other universities, whereas other faculty members think that cheating is not a major problem in the College of Business. To begin to address these issues, the dean of COB commissioned a study to assess the current ethical behavior of business students at BDT. As a former college athlete herself, the dean believed that the spirit of fair play students developed as part of participating in athletics would make them less likely to cheat.

As part of this study, an anonymous exit survey was administered to a sample of 1,440 students from this year’s graduating class, half of whom were business students and half of whom were not. The survey asked various questions, including the student’s college (business or nonbusiness) and if the student was an athlete or a nonathlete. Responses of the various questions were fed into a computer algorithm (advance data analytics) that made a quantitative determination as to whether the student should be considered a “cheater” or not. The results are in the attached Excel spreadsheet, “Benchmark – Ethical Behavior of Business Students at Bo Diddley Tech.” Utilize the data set in the Excel spreadsheet and select a randomized 100-unit sample from the original 1,440 exit surveys.

You will use the DCOVAS framework. Reference readings in The Statistician In You: Simple Everyday Life-Hacks (TSIY).

In what ways does Pankaj Ghemawat critique Thomas Friedman’s argument about the world being “flat”?  In what ways does Freidman suggest the world is flat, and to what extent (and why) does Ghemawat object?

Respond to Stensons post min 100 words

The article, “App-Powered Protests Put Democracy in Peril” argues that political protests that are taking place by citizens connecting on aps like Twitter is not the most effective way for political change. There is so much that goes into political change happening and the best way for it to happen is not through protests in the streets, is what is being argued. Bessa Momami’s claim that, “These are inherently good intentions to improve democracy… But this critical discussion can’t and won’t take place in the streets…” is something I find to be very interesting and something I believe to be a fair point. I completely understand that train of thought and do not disagree with it, but I don’t think that we can devalue the importance of protests, especially with so many that have taken place in recent years. There have been several women’s marches and BLM protests that I think are what help move the needle for change, which is why I think that these protests also do have an impact. The article suggests that many of us believe technology fueled revolutions would work because, to a certain extent, we do not fully understand how much goes into improving democracy. Additionally, it argues that just because there are protests, it does not mean that is the “majoritarian will.” This is a very fair point, and something that is hard to measure but again, I understand where the author is coming from because there is a lot of perspective to take in.

The article, “Why did the Twitter Revolutions Fail,” by Ivan Krastev analyzes several different reasons as to why technology did not impact politics and change in the way many thought it might. One point that stood out to me is Krastev’s mentioning that “Our ideas and strategies for social change were shaped less by historical experience and more by the utopian possibilities of the world of technology.” This is a very interesting perspective, and one that he refers to in his article as the “Silicon Valley effect.” I agree with Krastev that people might have overestimated certain aspects of this and that is part of the reason not all protests were as successful as people might have thought, like he mentions.

When it comes to the thought of revolutionary success, technology plays a very interesting role and something that is fascinating to consider. It certainly can bring a lot of people together which we have seen, but on the other hand also has the ability to create an even stronger divide. That is what makes it so complex, which is why I do not necessarily believe that it fully enhances revolutionary success.

It’s a Flat World, After All

Why the World Isn’t Flat

Question:

In what ways does Pankaj Ghemawat critique Thomas Friedman’s argument about the world being “flat”?  In what ways does Freidman suggest the world is flat, and to what extent (and why) does Ghemawat object?  Whose perspective do you find most compelling and why?  What are the implications if your preferred perspective is true?
