Do you think people are becoming too dependent on computers, or are computers allowing us more time to learn other things?

Socrates was illiterate and avoided the written word because he felt it weakened the mind. Similarly, many people today fear that we’re weakening our children’s minds by making them too dependent on computers. Also, in many schools students spend two years of math education learning long division – a skill that’s almost never used in the age of computers. Some educators argue that a student’s time could be better spent learning other things. Do you think people are becoming too dependent on computers, or are computers allowing us more time to learn other things?

explain the role that the competing interests play in advocating and formulating public policy related to your particular issue.

Competing Interests in Public PolicyContemporary public policy often is the result of a complex series of interactions among a large group of actors. Legislative bodies and government agencies are important players in policy formulation and implementation; however, they are not the only entities involved. There is a multitude of interested parties that may be involved in a public policy issue. For example, education policy issues might involve National Departments of Education, local departments of education, local school boards, teachers, and parents. In addition, there may be other competing interests such as church groups, atheist groups, or publishing groups, which believe that certain subjects should or should not be taught in schools. The interaction among interested parties—referred to as and considered to be competing interests—may be harmonious or conflicting, but their collective involvement in the policy network may have a major effect on outcomes of public policy. To prepare for this Discussion:Review the article “Using Collaboration as a Governance Strategy: Lessons from Six Watershed Management Programs” in this week’s Learning Resources. Is the Internet democratizing American politics?

I posted a series of articles on Black Board concerning the role Internet and computer technology might play (or might not play) in enhancing the citizen voice in civic engagement, in governance, and in policy making. (You’ll find them in the content area “Internet Articles.”) Along with the the articles I have posted, and any other sources you might find on your own, discuss the concept of “Digital Democracy.” Is the Internet democratizing American politics? Do political Web sites and blogs mobilize inactive citizens and make the public sphere more inclusive? Can policy makers improve decision making by harnessing networks to public institutions? Conversely, will our reliance on technology for communication/information simply lead to the accentuation of a focus on the individual and to his/her compartmentalization.Below is a link to a list of web sites that are either platforms that support civic engagement activities, and/or are non-profits or agencies whose focus is the engagement of the citizen in governance. I have also added this list in the content area under the heading “Web Sites.” With the questions that I have outlined above, choose one of these sites to add to your analysis of the role of social media and the Internet, and speak to the effectiveness of your chosen site in community engagement in forming policy. This means simply how it functions, what’s the audience, and given the knowledge you’ve garnered, are there weaknesses in their approach? Strengths? With your readings as a guide, simply share some of your own ideas, interpretations, and ideas. use these instruction and write to or three pages , see the attachment there some sites use some of them
