Learning Activity: Creating a Severance Package

Completing this activity will help you prepare for the upcoming assignment in Week 7. Think of it as practice for the assignment. As such, focus on content, not formatting. Your paper should be no more than 1 to 2 pages in length.

For this activity:

• Create a severance package for a separated employee in a fictitious company.
  • At a minimum, include:
    • Position differences.
    • Years of service.
    • Actual compensation amounts.
    • Any additional benefits that you want to add.
• Determine whether severance pay is taxable.
• Create a chart that depicts the timeline of the disbursement of the compensation.
  • Use Microsoft Word or an equivalent application, such as OpenOffice.

Use at least one quality academic resource in this activity. Consider beginning with your course textbook and quality sources that can be found in the Strayer Library.

Note: Wikipedia and other websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Does marketing create or satisfy needs?

Marketing has often been defined in terms of satisfying customers’ needs and wants. Critics, however, maintain that marketing goes beyond that and creates needs and wants that did not exist before. They feel marketers encourage consumers to spend more money than they should on goods and services they do not really need.

Take a position: Marketing shapes consumer needs and wants versus Marketing merely reflects the needs and wants of consumers.

Non traditional health care practices

Research different popular nontraditional health care practices. Write a 1,000-1,200-word paper exploring nontraditional health care practices and include the following:

1. Describe nontraditional health care practices in different cultures. Compare at least three cultures.
2. Explain the importance of these practices in providing holistic and quality health care.

Johnny’s largest meal of the day is late in the evening. Twice a week he prepares his own hot dinners at his dorm. The other nights he eats frozen convenience foods, microwave dinners, fast food, or cold sandwiches. His friends have mentioned to him that his eating habits may affect his health, but Johnny has explained that he is an athlete and needs to eat the way he does to have energy to compete at a college level. He has seen no change in his weight over the past few months, either up or down, not even with weight training activities. He has not been to the doctor in a year, but as a student athlete is required to see the doctor once every year, and so he will schedule an appointment in the upcoming weeks in preparation for lacrosse season.

Johnny wants to be the best athlete possible and his friends’ concerns have made him think about his eating habits. He has visited you at the student health center where you are volunteering with the nutrition office as part of your nutrition class. What advice can you give Johnny about sports nutrition and his current eating habits? Please give him at least five tips. Note: Please clearly indicate your tips in your response.

Read the following case scenario:

In the ongoing war on terrorism, the new president has proposed expanding the jurisdiction of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISA). FISA is a U.S. federal court established and authorized under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 to oversee requests for surveillance warrants against foreign spies inside the United States by federal law. The new president’s proposed Secret Terrorism Trial Bill will expand the jurisdiction of the FISA to hold secret, non-public trials of accused terrorists for any planned or actual acts of terrorism on U.S. soil. The bill will also allow witnesses to testify before the FISA Court by remote video with their identities kept secret from the accused and any defense team. The stated purpose for the secrecy is to allow trials of terrorists without giving them a public platform for their radical ideology and to allow witnesses to testify without fear of reprisals from terrorist groups such as ISIS or Al-Qaeda.

Discussion: Analyzing Addiction Treatment Plans

An addiction treatment plan is a plan of action. It provides a map for clients receiving treatment services so that they will know where they are going, how they will get there, and how they will know when they have arrived at their final destination.

There are numerous addiction treatment plan formats, but they all should contain at a minimum these five elements: 1) long-term goals related to each problem or need; 2) short-term goals for each long-term goal; 3) objectives of how short-term goals will be achieved; 4) strategies or therapeutic interventions for meeting each objective; and 5) expected outcomes. The specific objectives should be conveyed in measurable, behavioral terms that state what the client will do to meet each short-term goal. Objectives should be broken down into a series of small, achievable steps that move incrementally toward a larger end goal.

In the Assignment for this week, you began to develop a 12-month addiction treatment plan for Marge. Select a section of the SPP Treatment Plan Template that you created for Marge and post it to the Discussion Board. As a class, you will work together to evaluate the section of each of your addiction treatment plans.

I recall being in my Sunday School class at a young age. I had lots of friends and I liked to socialize. My Sunday School teacher was a wonderful lady and every time you saw her, she was smiling. I didn’t know the total burden she was under, but I know that she had lost a child. I recall wondering how she could always be happy. Since I was so social, I didn’t always appear that I was listening in Sunday School. As I grew up, got married, and my husband and I went into ministry, I recalled frequently of her example of a Christian woman, and was drawn closer to God because I wanted to be like her and have that same type of strong faith. I wrote to her and told her how much I appreciated her life and that even if it didn’t seem like I listened in Sunday School, I was, but more importantly I was drawn to the example of her life as a Christian.  She was very generous with her love and smile. She was a good listener. She wrote me back and told me that my letter came just in time to help her through a tough time in her life. She taught special need children in the public school system and would always share with them about the love of God. The school system had recently passed a rule that the teachers could not speak of God or share their faith with others in the classroom. My letter to her gave her encouragement that it wasn’t so much what she said that spoke to others about God’s love, but her life.

She went on to tell me that her two grown sons were teaching Sunday School and were frustrated with their students as they didn’t think they were being effective teachers because the children didn’t appear to get engaged and listening to them when they taught. She read my letter to them and they were encouraged that their teaching was more effective than they thought.
