Effective financial reporting depends on sound ethical behavior.

Effective financial reporting depends on sound ethical behavior. Financial scandals in accounting and the businesses world have resulted in legislation to ensure adequate disclosures and honesty and integrity in financial reporting. A sound economy is contingent on truthful and reliable financial reporting.

Instructions:

  • Read the following scenario.
  • Answer the questions that follow. Your answers should result in a 2-3 page submission.
  • Reference back to your text book for guidance on how to think through the scenario.

Scenario:

Imagine you are the assistant controller in charge of general ledger accounting at Linbarger Company. Your company has a large loan from an insurance company. The loan agreement requires that the company’s cash account balance be maintained at $200,000 or more, as reported monthly. At June 30, the cash balance is $80,000. You give this update to Lisa Infante, the financial vice president. Lisa is nervous and instructs you to keep the cash receipts book open for one additional day for purposes of the June 30 report to the insurance company. Lisa says, “If we don’t get that cash balance over $200,000, we’ll default on our loan agreement. They could close us down, put us all out of our jobs!” Lisa continues, “I talked to Oconto Distributors (one of Linbarger’s largest customers) this morning. They said they sent us a check for $150,000 yesterday. We should receive it tomorrow. If we include just that one check in our cash balance, we’ll be in the clear. It’s in the mail!”

Questions

  1. What is the accounting problem that the Linbarger Company faces?
  2. What are the ethical considerations in this case? Provide rationale for why these are ethical considerations.
  3. What are the negative impacts that can happen if you do not follow Lisa Infante’s instructions to wait one more day to post the balance?
  4. Who will be negatively impacted if you do comply? Provide a rationale for why these individuals will be impacted.
  5. What is one alternative that you could pursue in this scenario? Support your recommendations with information you learned in this class
Do you feel confident you would be able to deal with conflict using all or some of the suggestions above?

Corey (2015) has the following advice for facilitators dealing with difficult group members:

  • Express annoyance with a member without denigrating the character of the person.

•□Avoid responding to a sarcastic remark with sarcasm.

•□Educate the member about how the group works to demystify the process.

•□Encourage a member to explore his or her fears or any form of resistance rather than ignore them.

•□Avoid labeling and judging any member and instead describe the behavior of the member.

•□State observations and hunches in a tentative way rather than being dogmatic.

•□Demonstrate sensitivity to a member’s culture and avoid stereotyping the individual.

•□Let members who are difficult for you know how they are affecting you in anon-blaming way.

•□Avoid using the role and power of the leader to intimidate members.

•□Monitor your own countertransference reactions.

•□Challenge members in a caring and respectful way to do things that may be painful and difficult

•□Avoid retreating when conflict arises

•□Provide a balance between support and challenge.

•□Refrain from taking member reactions in an overly personal way.

•□Facilitate a more focused exploration of a problem rather than give simple solutions.

•□Meet the member’s needs, not your own.

•□Invite group members to state how they are personally affected by problematic behaviors of other members, but block judgments, evaluations, and criticisms. (p. 90).

Do you feel confident you would be able to deal with conflict using all or some of the suggestions above? Why or why not?

Select a Selfie that you have posted before on a social media site.

For your initial post (3%): Select a Selfie that you have posted before on a social media site. If you have never taken and posted a Selfie, you are asked to do so now*. Postyour Selfie with your forum post, and answer the following questions:

  • How does your Selfie perform (reflect, show, demonstrate) your socio-demographics? Expressions of your culture & background – Race/ethnicity, social/economic status, sexuality/gender, ability etc?
  • What choices did you make to present yourself and what does this say about you? Clothing, pose, facial expression, location.
  • How do you frame the picture to construct meaning about your image? Background, lighting, proximity, angle of the camera.

You must follow the parameters of what constitutes a “Selfie”: “a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media” (dictionary meaning). This means that your photo/Selfie artifact:

-will not be a video

-will not be a photo of someone taking a Selfie of themselves (or a group of people)

-will not be a photo that is a portrait of someone (in which someone else is taking the photo)

*If you do not have a Selfie and are taking a new one, and really do not want to show your face – you can angle your camera to (for example) show the top of your head, an eye, a hand or foot, a shadow of yourself etc… be creative. These photos are not public and are not shared outside your forum group of 20 or so students.

1 mark for the photo and 2 marks for answering the questions.

In your response (2%) to another student, provide some thoughtful commentary about their Forum Post and Selfie reflection. Provide some comparisons and contrasts between you, with some thoughts about why that might be.

When faced with a problem, what do you do to solve it?

When faced with a problem, what do you do to solve it? This assignment asks you to apply a six-step to problem solving process to a specific problem scenario. You will write a paper that presents a synthesis of your ideas about solving the problem using this systematic approach. As Voltaire said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking.”

Choose one (1) of the problem scenarios as a topic choice for your paper

Scenario 1: You have worked at your company for eleven (11) years. You have returned to college to earn a Bachelor’s degree in order to increase your chances for a promotion. You are nearly finished with your degree, when a supervisor’s position in a competing company becomes available in another state. The start date is in two (2) weeks, during your final exam period for your courses. The position offers a $15,000 per year salary increase, a car allowance, and relocation expenses. Your former supervisor works for the company and is recommending you for the position based on your outstanding job performance; if you want the job, it’s yours. All of the other supervisors at this level in the company have Master’s degrees, so you know that you would be expected to earn your Bachelor’s degree and continue on to a Master’s degree. Your present company offers tuition reimbursement, but the new company does not.

Scenario 2: Your child comes home from school with an assignment sheet for a school project. He / she is very excited about the project and begins work immediately, doing research on the Internet and gathering materials. You read over the assignment sheet and notice that your child is not including all of the required items in the project, and you have some ideas for how to improve the quality of the presentation. You recently read an article in a parenting magazine about the importance of a child developing responsibility for his/ her own learning. You recall the many ways in which your parents took over your school projects. You, on the other hand, want to encourage your child’s confidence in his / her ability to complete a project independently. The next day, you are at the grocery store when you see a parent of a student in your child’s class. That parent has spent over $30 in supplies for the science project and is taking a day off of work to put the pieces of the project together.

Scenario 3: You have two jobs—one during the week from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and one on Saturday from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. You are taking two classes—one that meets from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, and one class online. You have two kids—one who plays soccer, and one who is in band. You have two elderly parents who no longer drive. You have two siblings—one who lives two (2) miles away, and one who lives in another state. You have two (2) papers due in your classes the same week that one (1) of your children has a soccer tournament, and the other child has a band concert. You are coaching the soccer team, and you are in charge of fundraising for the band. You have a goal to complete your degree in two (2) years. Your doctor tells you that your blood pressure, your cholesterol, and your weight are too high and recommends several medications that cost you nearly $200 per month after your insurance co-pay.

Scenario 4: You are a sales representative for a company that encourages staff to log time in the field and away from the office. You are expected to begin and end your day at the office. You notice that each day when you arrive and return another co-worker is already there, and you wonder whether this person spends most of his / her time at the office. At your weekly sales meeting, you are informed of your co-workers’ outstanding sales performance. You suspect that this co-worker is spending more time flattering the boss instead of working leads in the field, and as a result is getting the best client referrals. Your own sales numbers have steadily decreased since this other sales representative was hired.

Step One: Define the problem

Step Two: Analyze the problem

Step Three: Generate options

Step Four: Evaluate options

Step Five: Make your decision

Step Six: Implement and reflect

Write a three page paper in which you:
1. Define the problem in the scenario that you have chosen.
2. Analyze the problem in the scenario.
3. Generate options for solving the problem in the scenario.
4. Evaluate the options for solving the problem.
5. Decide on the best option for solving the problem.
6. Explain how you will implement the decision made and reflect on whether this option was the most effective.

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.

Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
