identify important similarities and differences, including an explanation of the strengths and limitations of each theory in explaining developmental processes

THE CONTRIBUTION OF CLASSICAL THEORISTS TO CONTEMPORARY DEVELOPMENTAL THEORISTS

While all major developmental theories attempt to explain the growth of individuals, each theory has a slightly different perspective. Some theories emphasize environmental (nurture) more than biological (nature) influences. Some theories focus on a particular construct (e.g., cognition), while others emphasize the impact of age range in shaping development. Piaget’s cognitive developmental theory emphasizes fixed stages during which the mind’s capacities allow an individual to learn about the world. Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, on the other hand, is not stage-based and describes growth as an interaction between the individual and his or her environment.

Contemporary theories (e.g., Langer’s theory of mindfulness) typically build upon the foundation generated by earlier theories. Langer’s theory of mindfulness contains similarities to classical theories, such as Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, in that they both agree that development is contextual and the organism is an active “mindful” participant. Langer took Vygotsky’s theory to a new level, focusing specifically on education and the learner. Other contemporary theories include neo-Piagetian cognitive developmental theories, which attempt to address the limitations found within Piaget’s classical theory. Robbie Case, Andreas Demetriou, and Kurt Fischer proposed theories that were extensions of Piaget’s theory. These theorists added concepts that expanded on cognitive functioning within the stages of development. Most developmental psychologists today do not believe that a single perspective or theory can sufficiently explain lifespan development; rather, an eclectic approach accounts for development better.

For this Discussion, you will examine classical and contemporary developmental theories as they relate to current applications in developmental psychology.

Walden University, LLC. (2010a). Cognitive development theories [Video]. Walden University Canvas. https://waldenu.instructure.com

To prepare for this Discussion:

  • Review the course text and other Learning Resources related to mid-20th-century theories and recent theoretical perspectives
  • Select two theories from the following list, one from each column (classical, contemporary), that examine the same developmental processes (i.e., cognitive, physical, and/or social-emotional).

Classical Theories Contemporary Theories

  • Psychoanalytic/Psychosexual
  • Psychosocial
  • Behaviorism/Learning
  • Social Learning
  • Cognitive-Developmental
  • Information Processing
  • Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience
  • Ethology/Evolutionary Developmental
  • Sociocultural
  • Systems Theory

Post a brief description of the two theories you selected (one classical and one contemporary). Contrast the theories you selected. Specifically, identify important similarities and differences, including an explanation of the strengths and limitations of each theory in explaining developmental processes (i.e., cognitive, physical, and social-emotional). Note: Your descriptions should be in paragraph form, not bullet points. Use your Learning Resources and/or other scholarly sources to support your post. Use proper APA format and citations.

Write: For this discussion, you will address the following prompts:

  • Explain at least five differences between popular and scholarly sources used in research.

Instructions

Part 1: Choosing a Topic (@ least 2 pages)

For your course project you will develop a health promotion program or intervention evaluation plan that addresses a public health issue using a public health theory/framework. You will take the necessary steps to develop this health evaluation plan and present it to community stakeholders in Unit VII. You will be using this public health issue to build upon for each part of this course project, including the culmination of the final project, so make sure you find one that you are really interested in to do the research.

For Part 1 of this project, due in this unit, you will address the following:

· Identify a community public health issue within your local community or state that you think needs to be addressed.

· Describe a public health theory/framework that will be used for your health promotion program or intervention plan.

· Provide some of health data and background information on the public health issue to explain your rationale for choosing this issue as an area of concern.

Your completed paper topic should be at least one to two pages in length. You must use at least one outside source. All sources, including the textbook, must be cited and referenced according to APA Style. APA paper formatting (title page and running head) is not a requirement for this assignment.

what role do nursing values and professional ethics play on public health and policy?

What is the importance of values and ethics? Values and ethics set the tone for human behavior. Values and ethics determine how we interact with the world, with those around us, and with ourselves. Values and ethics provide the framework for how we view the world, as well as what we put out into it. Nursing values and professional ethics are no different. These values and ethics determine the code by which we care, communicate, and approach the job of nursing.

So, what role do nursing values and professional ethics play on public health and policy?

For this Discussion, you will consider the role of nursing values and professional ethics on your selected advocacy issue. You will also consider the impact of law, politics, and ethics on the issue.

Post a response detailing the following:

  • Describe the nursing values and professional ethics related to the advocacy priority identified for the selected population (you can pick one appropriate)
  • Why do our nursing values and ethics demand it be on the agenda?
  • Compare the role of law, ethics, or politics on the population identified in your Week 2 Advocacy Area Assignment. Consider which area (law, ethics, or politics) has the most impact on the area.
ANCSA was a fair settlement for Alaska Natives. Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block?

Based on your reading in the webtext, select one of the following thesis statements. Your response should be two to three paragraphs in length.

  1. The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) and the Native corporation system have been good for Alaska Natives.
    OR
  2. ANCSA and the Native corporation system have been bad for Alaska Natives.

Next, revise the statement you have chosen to reflect the complexity of the historical events surrounding this issue. Provide specific examples of how ANCSA and the Native corporation system have had a positive or negative impact—or perhaps both—on Alaska Natives. Further illustrate the complexity of this issue by showing how the passage of ANCSA was contingent on at least three historical events or force

QUESTION 1

Consider the following statement: The support of non-Native Alaskans was an important factor leading to the settlement of Alaska Native land claims. Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences.

QUESTION 2

Consider the following statement: ANCSA was a fair settlement for Alaska Natives. Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences.

QUESTION 3

Consider the following statement: ANCSA led to economic benefits for white Alaskans as well as for Natives. Is this conclusion consistent with the evidence presented in this learning block? Answer Yes or No, and then explain your choice in one or two sentences.

How do the theories in one topic strengthen the theories in the other?

In this project, you will choose two of the four main topics discussed in class – (human identity, the nature of God/Ultimate Reality, valid arguments, and ethics) – and compare them to each other. For the two topics you choose, answer the following two questions :

(i) which topic do you think is the foundation of the other? Use theories we learned within the topics to illustrate your points.

(For example: do we need a theory of ultimate reality to make valid arguments, or do we need valid arguments to make a theory of ultimates? Does hylomorphism teach us the importance of ritual for our embodied souls, or does ritual show us that hylomorphism is the best theory of mind? 。Choose two topics and make your own comparisons!)

(ii) How do the theories in one topic strengthen the theories in the other? Use theories we learned within the topics to illustrate your points.

(For example: The theory of Dao shows that the ethics of the Bhagavad Gita are realistic, because the nature of reality is spontaneous (自然), so we do not need to be attached to outcomes, and the Bhagavad Gita helps us to have ideas how to follow Dao without having to separate from our communities and societies. Choose two topics and make your own comparisons!)
