The point of a scholarly book review is not to summarize the content of the book, but to situate the historical merit of the book and to evaluate critically the author’s purpose, thesis, contentions, and methods of analysis. Hence, the bulk of the body of one’s review essay will be an evaluation of how convincing was the author’s presentation of his/her thesis, and a commentary on the book’s contribution to one’s understanding of important issues.  Your assignment is a combination of a book review, book report, and analysis.

Your assignment is to read Natalie Zemon Davis’ book, The Return of Martin Guerre, and write a review of sorts.  The novel tackles an important aspect of historical inquiry:  how historians discover things about anyone in the past?  By looking at letters, diaries, autobiographies, memoirs, family histories, literary sources, and stories, Davis gives modern audiences a biopic glimpse into peasant life in 16^th century southern France via one unique story.

Your review has 2 parts: Part I is 6 questions to answer, and Part II is a short essay

Instructions and formatting:  First, answer the questions in great detail, and then complete the short essay as directed, all in one document.  Your document must:

• Be a Word document; one document for both parts
• Be typed, double-spaced throughout
• Include your name/course/due date/instructor name in upper left corner
• Include page numbers in upper right corner
• Include a number of specific quotes, as well as details from the text

Before you present your results for Project 1, read Chapter 8 Elementary Quantitative Data Analysis. Now that you have designed your research survey, you are ready to collect data from 5 people. You will use a convenience sample since you are students and limited to people that you know. While a convenience sample is biased and cannot be used to generalize to the larger population, it makes sense for you to pre-test your questionnaire with people you know (or a small subset of your target group) as an initial step in your quantitative research. This way, you will pre-determine problems with your questionnaire prior to attempting to gather data from a larger sample. Project 1 will be submitted through canvas. Please prepare your report for FlavorKing’s Board of Directors. Include in your report answers to the following questions. Determine your convenience sample. Who will you use to respond to your questionnaire? How come? You want to sell to FlavorKing how come your small sample is a good pre-test and will provide helpful information to them. (It will be helpful to have some people who share similar demographic characteristics, but have some variation. Too much variation makes it difficult to see any patterns. Normally, quantitative work does not use a convenience sample because you want your work to be generalizable to the entire population. You will only use a convenience sample because this is a class project.) What method (in person, email, phone, etc.) will you use to deliver your survey? How come? You will sell FlavorKing on why your method of delivery is important. Gather your data. Ask 5 people to complete your survey and tally their responses. If you can do so easily create a table. You will likely impress them with a table because it looks scientific! If you cannot create a table, find a “scientific” way to present your frequencies. Use chapter 8 for guidance. Analyze your frequencies and write down a theme or pattern that you see in your data. You may want to group people by certain demographic characteristics like age (12-13 year old in comparison to 8-9 year old or by gender, race, or social-class.). You will look at how your independent variables within different demographic groups might affect the extent to which people in your small sample eat plant-based food. This type of comparison is a cross-tabulation. You will need to let FlavorKing’s Executive Board know your initial findings based on your pre-test. Provide an explanation for them why you think this theme and/or pattern is important for them to consider. More importantly, explain to them why this pattern needs to be studied on a larger sample!
