Are there differences in retention rates between individuals that initiate MAT prior to release versus individuals maintained and inducted at intake?

The Effects of MAT in correctional facilities on adult inmates

one-year post release treatment retention

The Effects of Medication Assisted Treatment in correctional facilities on adult inmates

one-year post release treatment retention

Problem Statement

The percentage of individuals with opioid addiction in US prisons are needing alternatives for substance abuse care. Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the use of medications, along with counseling and behavioral therapies, to provide a holistic approach to the treatment of substance use disorders (SUD). MAT is new to the area of incarceration and despite the evidence of effectiveness, only a few prisons in the US utilize this evidence-based treatment approach (Ferguson et al., 2019). Providing inmates with MAT has sustained, long-term impact on many opioid related outcomes post-release (Brinkley-Rubinstein et al., 2018).

According to Degenhardt et al. (2014), individuals that are continuously retained in MAT post release have the lowest post release mortality rate. However, after release from prison, some individuals who seek treatment at medication assistant facilities are not mandated; therefore, treatment retention can be a problem. Treatment retention is the amount of days that an individual remains in treatment and is important for inmates who are recently released from jail/prison (Shaul et. al, 2020). It is important because drug overdose is one of the leading causes of death among people recently released from correctional facilities, and the first two weeks of release are the most crucial being the highest risk for relapse that leads to an overdose (Moore et al., 2018). MAT treatment in the correctional setting can increase the likelihood that the individual receiving MAT will seek treatment post-release, thus, leading to a higher chance for treatment retention (Fox et al, 2015). Published studies do not show the effects of MAT in correctional settings on adult inmate’s post release treatment retention. According to Fox et al., (2015), if MAT is not implemented while incarcerated it will be harder to implement during post release; therefore, the effectiveness of MAT on post release should be studied.

Purpose

The purpose of this quantitative study is to examine whether starting MAT pre-release improves retention rates post release in selected state adult correction facilities in the United States. Secondary data addressing the use of MAT in correctional settings pre-release and the effectiveness it has on inmates’ post release treatment retention will be examined. Additionally, the target population that will be examined are adult inmates inducted prior to release versus those who are maintained directly from intake. Also, retention rates between the inmates initiated prior to release versus those initiated post-release will be compared. Furthermore, the type of medication administered to inmate is to be assessed to examine any differences in retention rates.

Significance

There are several states in addition to North Carolina that offer MAT in the US that include, but are not limited to, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, West Virginia, and New Jersey. Some of these correctional facilities require the inmate be currently enrolled in treatment prior to incarceration while others offer drug and alcohol assessments during incarceration to determine eligibility. There is little to no research on the retention rates of those individuals that continue MAT post-release. The results of this study will provide important insight into the issues of treatment retention in MAT once released from the correctional setting. Furthermore, the findings of this study will help inform policies within correctional settings, provide information regarding pre-release MAT on adult inmates’ post-release treatment retention, and provide information of practices in regard to expanding the use of MAT within the correctional setting throughout the United States. The opioid epidemic is on the rise daily and may cause correctional facilities to have an increase of inmates that have substance abuse issues. The effectiveness of pre-release MAT on post release treatment retention for adult inmates is important and will help inform policies and practices that will assist with public safety and the public health of society.

Background

According to a study conducted in 2007 to 2009, 58% of individuals in state prisons and 63% of individuals in jail have a substance use disorder (Csete, 2019). However, a study conducted by Pew Charitable Trust (2018) concluded that fewer than 1 percent of the more than 5,000 US prisons and jails, housing more than 2 million inmates, allow medication assisted treatment into the facility. Selected articles relating to medication assisted treatment and the correctional settings are described here. Articles searched were those that had any correlation between correctional facilities, medication assistant treatment, and retention rates. In addition, articles were searched that related to research that was completed over a 12-year period. The keywords searched were medication assisted treatment, correctional settings, jails/prisons/detention center, post release treatment, suboxone/methadone/buprenorphine, treatment facilities, heroin addiction, addiction therapies, substance use disorder, and opioid use disorder in the SAGE journals, PsycARTICLES, PsycINFO, ProQuest Central, Science Direct, and the criminal justice databases.

  1. Banta-Green, et al., (2019) investigated the linkage between medications for opioid use disorder and psychosocial supports post release.
  2. Brinkley-Rubinstein, et al., (2018) provided information about the benefits of post release treatment for inmates who continue receiving methadone while incarcerated.
  3. Csete, J. (2019) examined the statistics surrounding the percentage of individuals incarcerated in the US receiving MAT.
  4. Degenhardt, et al., (2014) researched information regarding opioid therapy treatment helping decrease the mortality rate (overdosing) once released from prison.
  5. Ferguson, et al., (2019) provided information pertaining to treatment retention and medicated assisted treatment.
  6. Fox, et al., (2015) evaluated information pertaining to the relapsing after release from prison/jail and overdose statistics.
  7. Langabeer, et al., (2020) offered information regarding overdose statistics after being released from incarceration and treatment retention.
  8. Moore, et al., (2018) provided information regarding the effects of MAT within the prisons.
  9. Pan, et al., (2015) assessed information pertaining to the relationship between CBT, medicated assisted treatment, and treatment retention.
  10. Ranapurwala, et al., (2018) provided information regarding a study conducted after release, at 2-week interval and 1-year interval; therefore, it provided information over a time period.
  11. Wiss, D. (2019) explored information regarding biopsychosocial theoretical framework.

Framework

The theoretical framework for this study will be a biopsychosocial approach (BPS). The biopsychosocial approach systematically considers biological, psychological and social factors and their interaction in understanding health and addiction. MAT offers medication and counseling which associates with the biological and psychological aspects along with being incarcerated which controls the social factor. This theory is to be a guide in this research as I examine whether receiving MAT pre-release has an effect on retention rates in MAT post-release treatment. Furthermore, biopsychosocial theory will inform this study about how individuals who participate in MAT program within the correctional setting pre-release will learn new behaviors, new attitudes, and new ways of thinking that will attribute to increased retention rates post-release.

Nature of The Study

This study will utilize quantitative methods with a causal-comparative design to provide an understanding of the effects of medication assistant treatment (independent variable) in correctional settings on adult inmates’ post release treatment retention (dependent variable), which is the primary focus of this doctoral study. To address how MAT in correctional settings effect post release treatment retention, individual’s treatment at medication assisted facilities will be examined from a two-week to one-year time frame. This will assist with assessing differences in treatment retention rates for individuals who began MAT prior to release versus those who started at intake post-release. In 2018, a study in North Carolina found that in the first two weeks post-release, an inmate is 40 times more likely to die of an opioid overdose than someone in the general public (Ranapurwala, Shanahan, Alexandridis, Proescholdbell, Naumann, Edwards Jr., and Marshall, 2018). This same study found that when restricted to heroin overdoses only, individuals are 74 times more likely to overdose in the first two-weeks post-release (Ranapurwala, Shanahan, Alexandridis, Proescholdbell, Naumann, Edwards Jr., and Marshall, 2018). Prior studies have measured treatment retention in a one-year time frame   (Brinkley-Rubinstein, et al., 2018). This quantitative analysis should help clarify the treatment retention rates for inmates’ post release treatment in medication assisted treatment facilities.

Proposed Types of Data

Primary data for this quantitative research study will be collected via archival data. The archival data will be collected from medication assisted facilities in eastern NC and government agencies regarding information pertaining to the MAT in correctional facilities.   In addition, the information collected from these agencies will include data concerning the type of opioid addiction, the type of medication given, and background information regarding their time incarcerated.

Limitations

A potential limitation to this study is the weakness of archival data as it does not offer the fullness as would interviews. Archival data also may include disadvantages such as the overall quality of the data and completeness of documentation.

A critical evaluation of how radiography can best meet the needs of the transgender community.

Title of Project:

A critical evaluation of how radiography can best meet the needs of the transgender community.

Outline of project: The aim of this project is to conduct a literature review into how radiography can best meet the needs of the transgender community. This will include the social issues associated with the transgender community and the implications this has for the quality of care delivered by radiographers. This research will also explore the idea of additional training for radiographers surrounding this area. Any research completed regarding this topic in radiology will be explored and evaluated as well as specific policies and procedures. A literature review will be conducted by searching databases for relevant articles using specific criteria to carry out this research.

Background information: Transgender individuals have an assigned sex at birth that is different to their gender identity (Reisner et al., 2015). Bolderston and Ralph (2016) highlighted that the transgender community experiences systematic discrimination in institutions such as health care, despite the increase of social tolerance and legislative progress. They also highlighted that there is a need for better training for radiographers to be able to sensitively respond to these patients’ specific health and social needs. The Society of Radiographers (2019) highlighted in their code of professional conduct that radiographers must practice in a compassionate, antidiscriminatory manner and must consider the social and cultural differences of individuals This could be very interesting and is becoming quite a hot topic You may not find too much directly linked to Radiography but you can look in medicine and nursing You will need to think of a search strategy but I will help you with this whilst ensuring that vulnerable groups, such as the transgender community, are protected. Familiarity of health care professionals with transgender related issues and terminology has shown to improve the experiences of these individuals when in a healthcare environment (Kirkpatrick et al., 2019). Therefore it is imperative to educate radiographers on healthcare concerns unique to the transgender population otherwise they are at a great disadvantage when striving for high quality patient care (Grossman, 2016). Therefore additional training should be advised in order for the staff to work competently when caring for these individuals. Concepts such as intake forms which allow a patient to confirm their gender identity, preferred name, pronoun and any surgical treatment they may have had (Sonnenblick et al., 2018). This will aid the radiographer optimise patient care whilst embracing diversity and being culturally sensitive. Radiographers can help achieve equitable patient care by providing a welcoming environment and staying up-to-date with the rapidly changing recommendations related to transgender patients (Sowinski and Gunderman, 2018). All of the above will help radiographer’s meet the needs of transgender patients. The primary aim of this research is to evaluate the how radiography can best meet the needs of the transgender community. All aspects of this will be explored, from all ethical issues to the affect this has on the patient’s pathway. 5. Plan of investigation, including research design/method The method of research will be a systematic literature review. I will use databases to search predetermined keywords in order to view the most relevant articles. This will help answer the title question. 6. Population I will use the databases recommended under the health and social care aspect of the UWE website. These will include; British Nursing Database, CINAHL Plus (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), Cochrane Library, EMBASE, healthtalk.org, MEDLINE and NICE evidence. I will use inclusion and exclusion criteria to search for the best articles. Inclusion Criteria Exclusion Criteria Justification Published research Unpublished research Published research will be included to ensure the research is reliable and valid. English Language Foreign Language Articles published in a foreign language will not be included because of time constraints due to needing to translate. Articles published after 2010 Articles published before 2010 Only articles published after 2010 will be included to ensure that it is relevant and up-to-date due to regulations surrounding the topic constantly changing. Articles directly related to radiology Articles related to other healthcare professions This is to ensure that the question is answered. Each healthcare profession adopts a different approach to challenges so by only including radiology specific articles I can directly compare the content. I will also research offline when possible by visiting the library for relevant books and journals. 7. Ethical consideration The ethical considerations are minimal when conducting a literature review as it is not a primary form of research. I will not be in direct contact with any of the participants of the studies I will be evaluating. However, I do need to approach the topic sensitively and consult ethical guidelines when necessary. 9. Supporting References Bolderston, A. and Ralph, S. Critically evaluate the purpose of a consolidated plan and its relationship with project progress.

Background

Globally, we are witnessing the worst global economic disruption and health dilemma, with the Covid-19 pandemic affecting every sector and industry. The complexities and challenges posed by Covid-19 propose that different governments worldwide try to ease the spread of the virus and lessen its impacts. In a bid for a way out, non-governmental organisations such as WHO and UNICEF emphasised that the development of safe and effective Covid-19 vaccines (depicted/represented by figure 1) will be a huge step forward toward ending the pandemic and getting back to doing more of the things we enjoy.

A vaccine is a biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a particular infectious disease (NHS 2019) and typically contains an antigen, adjuvants, preservatives, and stabilisers (WHO 2021). Vaccines help train the individual immune system to create antibodies, just as it does when exposed to a disease. However, because vaccines contain only killed or weakened forms of germs like viruses or bacteria, they do not cause the disease or put you at risk of its complications.

The Brief

In collaboration with the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca plc, the UK government has announced £65.5 million of new funding for developing the Covid-19 vaccine (University of Oxford 2020). The vaccine development is the first of its kind that will be used to combat the global threat to human health; that is, Covid-19. By working together, the different stakeholders involved aim to deliver a working vaccine that could ease the spread of the virus and lessen its impacts. In addition, the objective of the proposed project is to determine how long immunity from the vaccine lasts, identify groups of people at risk from low vaccine responses, and inform clinical management and vaccine policy.

Following a rigorous selection process, the Project Board has decided that the Project Management Department of RGU will plan and implement the project on behalf of the project sponsors. You have been appointed as the project manager. The proposed project is to be delivered in 12 months due to its urgent need.

Requirements of the Coursework

This is a hands-on assignment intended to give you practical experience managing projects from initiation to implementation and reporting project progress. Therefore, you are required to prepare a Consolidated Plan that combines the project planning, application, and reporting processes. The report should account for the following:

1) Define the proposed project. Your definition should include a proper scope; inclusions, exclusions, objectives, deliverable statement, assumptions, constraints, success factors and success criteria.

2) Identify the 75 top level packages required to complete the project. Can you find examples in the scenario that help you to analyse the roles and responsibilities of the RN when it comes to prioritising care? delegating appropriately? and providing appropriate supervision? Which of the NMBA standards best captures the leadership responsibilities for the safe delivery of high quality care in the scenario?

provide a diagnosis of the character with the disorder, discuss the character’s symptomatology, describe any attempted treatment, and provide your analysis of the character’s likely prognosis.

Psychopathology in the movies:

Much of what the public knows about psychopathology is gleaned from popular media – for good or ill.  Thus, it can be useful to turn a critical eye on the media’s representation of mental illness.  For this paper you will need to view a recent (i.e., 2005 or later) motion picture which depicts a character with mental illness.  In your paper, you will provide a diagnosis of the character with the disorder, discuss the character’s symptomatology, describe any attempted treatment, and provide your analysis of the character’s likely prognosis. You will also need to describe the messages (both positive and negative) the movie provides the public about people with this disorder, as well as the way it characterizes the mental health profession. Finally, you will need to assess the film’s characterization of the disorder in light of our current understanding of the disorder (i.e., Were they accurate?  If so, how?  If not, what did they get wrong?)

For this assignment you will need to provide at least three citations to support your argument.  One citation should be for the movie itself, while the other two should be references to the sources you used to research the diagnosis (your textbook can count as one such source).

Mental Illness Movie:

Silver Linings Playbook – (2012) written and directed by David O. Russell.

After spending time in a mental health hospital, Pat Solatano (Bradley Cooper) is forced to move back in with his parents. The symptoms of living with bipolar disorder have caused him to lose both his wife and his job. He is determined to get his wife back and meets someone, Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), who offers to help him in exchange for being her ballroom dance partner. Silver Linings Playbook represents the range of emotion that often occurs within someone who lives with bipolar disorder in a way that is both real and riveting.

Paragraph breakdown instructions

The paper must follow the format below (and comply with APA style) to receive the maximum points. Paper must be 3-5 pages. The paper will be graded according to how well the following requirements are met:

Introduction

Provide an explanation of the topic of the paper (i.e., the controversy you’ve chosen to review or the movie/character you’ve decided to evaluate), its scope, and the argument that you intend to make.

Body

Describe the character’s behavior as depicted in the movie, their suspected psychopathology, and determine the extent to which that character’s behavior meets the criteria for a DSM-5 diagnosis.  You should address whether or not the movie provides an overt diagnosis for the character in question.  Describe any attempted treatment and provide your analysis of the character’s likely prognosis. You will also need to describe the messages (both positive and negative) the movie provides the public about people with this disorder, as well as the way it characterizes the mental health profession.  And be sure to critique the quality of the movie’s depiction of the disorder (did they get it right?).

Summary

Provide a concise summary of the body of your text, highlighting the key elements of the paper (i.e., the shortcomings of the disorder’s depiction in the movie; the relative lack of empirical data addressing a controversial point; etc.).  Clearly state your conclusion.

APA style
I will be posting an APA-style checklist for you to use in verifying that your paper is APA-style compliant, and this must be included as the first page of the paper.

develop a high-level plan for implementing a Cybersecurity Management Plan that will allow PBI-FS to begin operations in its new, on-island location.

Project #2: Cybersecurity Implementation Plan

Your Task:

The Acquisition of Island Banking Services has moved from the strategy development phase to the integration phase. In this phase, the M&A team will develop transition and implementation plans. Padgett-Beale’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) has recommended that a separate Cybersecurity Management Program be established for the Padgett-Beale Financial Services (PBI-FS) subsidiary to isolate as much risk as possible to the PBI-FS organization. This management program will require the establishment of policies, plans, and procedures which are customized to the financial service industry and the operating structure of PBI-FS.

The CISO has asked you to continue supporting the Merger & Acquisition team’s efforts. Your specific tasking is to assist in developing an implementation plan for the previously developed Cybersecurity strategy (Project #1). Since there have been additional developments in the M&A strategy overall, you should pay close attention to the Background Information provided later in this document.

Using your prior work (Project 1), develop a high-level plan for implementing a Cybersecurity Management Plan that will allow PBI-FS to begin operations in its new, on-island location. (The plan for the U.S. headquarters is being developed separately from your efforts.) This plan must take into account compliance requirements for U.S. banking laws, regulations, and standards. It must also include recommendations for required security controls, replacement of outdated hardware and software, and other measures necessary to reduce risk to an acceptable level. You must specifically address measures to reduce risks associated with both insider threats and external threats and threat actors.

Note: you MUST use the implementation plan outline provided later in this document.

You may need to perform additional analysis to address issues specific to the findings from the M&A team regarding the as-is state of the purchased assets which comprise the existing IT infrastructure.

Your high-level plan should include the system development life cycle (SDLC) gates/decision points and relevant tasks required to implement changes in the company’s hardware, software, and infrastructure. See https://www.sebokwiki.org/wiki/System_Life_Cycle_Process_Models:_Vee for more information about the gates & decision points.

You must also address any systems or software interoperability issues which may arise (especially those associated with the company’s existing custom software applications). You do not need to prepare a comprehensive Interoperability Assessment but, you should identify key issues and concerns. See the following resources for definitions and guidance:

You must clearly show that you have applied the following frameworks and concepts in your analysis and planning:

Note: Make sure that you include (in detail) the steps you would take to secure the new infrastructure.

Background:

As part of the purchase agreement for Island Banking Services, Padgett-Beale made a commitment to the bankruptcy court to operate the call center and transaction processing center on the island for the next five years. The Padgett-Beale, Inc. Merger and Acquisition Strategy for Island Banking Services has been updated and now includes the following stipulations which are derived from requirements to comply with U.S. laws and regulations while also implementing the contractual agreement to continue some operations on the island.

  1. Island Banking Services will become Padgett-Beale, Inc – Financial Services (PBI-FS).
  2. PBI-FS will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary with its own management structure.
  3. PBI-FS’s will be incorporated as a U.S. corporation and will comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
  4. PBI-FS’s headquarters unit and executive staff (including the CEO, COO, and CFO) will have separate offices from PBI but will be located within a 5 mile radius of the PBI Headquarters.
  5. PBI-FS’s call center and transactions processing center will remain on the island but will move to a vacant office building adjacent to the existing Padgett-Beale resort property.
  6. The deputy CISO from Padgett-Beale will serve as the interim CISO for PBI-FS.
  7. The CISO from Padgett-Beale will serve as a consultant to PBI-FS for all matters relating to the establishment of the subsidiary’s Cybersecurity Management Program.

As part of its due diligence efforts, the Padgett-Beale M&A team reviewed the existing cybersecurity posture for Island Banking Services. This review determined that, while there were some IT security protections in place, Island Banking Services never had a formal IT security program. Instead, the company outsourced management of its hardware, software, and networks to an islander owned and operated IT services company. This company installed and managed the networking equipment, firewalls, and workstations. Some workstations were used by tellers to conduct financial transactions using a web-based interface to a back-end database. The M&A team is suspicious of the existing software and databases due to the level of criminal activity that was uncovered during the police investigation into money laundering.

The M&A team also reviewed the inventory of digital assets (HW/SW/Licenses) included in the purchase of Island Banking Services. The team also reviewed existing contracts for services related to those assets. It has determined:

  1. Telecommunications. Undersea fiber optic cables connect the island to the global Internet. These cables are managed by a consortium of companies that contract with national and regional governments to provide telecommunications services (voice, video, and data) to a country or region. On-island access to Internet, cable television, and land-line telephone service are provided to residents and businesses on a contract basis by a government owned Communications Services company. The island’s local communications infrastructure was upgraded to buried fiber optic cables providing broad-band service after a hurricane destroyed the previous above ground copper cable infrastructure. Island Banking Services’ contract for communications services includes Voice over IP telephone service, one physical telecommunications connection via fiber optic cable, and one static IP address associated with that connection. Domain name services for the company’s Internet presence are provided by the island’s Communications Services company. The company uses network address translation services provided by the premises router to assign internal IP addresses to workstations and servers.
  2. Network Equipment. The network equipment is more than five years old and should be replaced. Since the company is moving PBI-FS’s operations to a new physical location, the entire network infrastructure from cables to routers to firewalls to wireless access points will be replaced. The network equipment closet also contains a special purpose access control system that uses hard wired RFID badge readers and RFID badges to control employee access to exterior and interior doors. This equipment is out of date and will need to be replaced once the company moves.
  3. Workstations. The computer workstations are more than five years old and currently run Windows 8.1. The workstations were custom built using refurbished components. All copies of Windows have an OEM license installed.
    1. Licenses for Office 2019 were included in the purchased assets.
    2. Three business licenses for an anti-virus program were included in the purchased assets. These licenses were installed on computers that were seized and taken into evidence as part of the ongoing law enforcement investigation. It is unclear whether these licenses will be usable in the future.
    3. More than 10 computer workstations were found to be using “free” versions of an anti-virus application. These licenses state “for non-commercial or personal, home use only.”
  4. Banking Applications Database & Servers (Hardware & Software). The current banking applications software uses a custom browser-based interface built on an Apache Web server connected to a MySQL database. The Apache Web server also hosted the company’s internal web site. The server software licenses, the code for the custom browser-based interface, and the web server and database server hardware were included in the purchased digital assets. The storage media (hard disk drives) containing the Linux operating system, applications software, and database files were seized as part of the investigation and have not yet been returned to the company.
  5. Electronic Mail and Public Web Server. At the time of purchase, Island Banking Services was in the middle of converting from an internally hosted email server based on Linux/Exim to individual Gmail accounts (not owned or managed by the company). The company had recently moved its public website from the internal Apache server to the Wix hosting service. This public website provides customers with access to the company’s custom built, web-based mobile banking services application.
  6. Data Backups and Data Recovery Services. The system administrator for Island Banking Services used a commercial image backup utility to manually backup the company’s servers on a weekly basis. The image backups were written to multiple Solid State Disks (SSDs) that were connected to a Linux server connected to the company’s internal network. The financial transactions software (custom written) used electronic journaling to create copies of each transaction record in a MySQL instance hosted in a private cloud (Platform as a Service). The entire transactions database was copied to this private cloud once every 12 hours. Transaction records were copied to the cloud database every 30 minutes.

Additional Information

  1. Consult the grading rubric for specific content and formatting requirements for this assignment.
  2. Your 10-12 page Implementation Plan should be professional in appearance with consistent use of fonts, font sizes, margins, etc. You should use headings and page breaks to organize your paper. The listed page length is a recommended target. You should not, however, exceed double that page count (i.e. no more than 25 pages including diagrams, tables, and lists).
  3. Your deliverable should use standard terms and definitions for cybersecurity. See Course Content > Cybersecurity Concepts Review for recommended resources.
  4. Your Enterprise IT Architecture Overview diagram may be constructed using commercial clip art but you may not copy / glue together architecture diagrams from other sources. MS Word and Power Point both provide drawing tools and clip art which you can use to construct your diagram. See Figure 1 in this file for an example of the type of diagram / level of detail required.
  5. The CSIA program recommends that you follow standard APA formatting since this will give you a document that meets the “professional appearance” requirements. APA formatting guidelines and examples are found under Course Resources. An APA template file (MS Word format) has also been provided for your use CSIA_Paper_Template(TOC+TOF,2021).docx.
  6. You must include a cover page with the assignment title, your name, and the due date. Your reference list must be on a separate page at the end of your file. These pages do not count towards the assignment’s page count.
  7. You are expected to write grammatically correct English in every assignment that you submit for grading. Do not turn in any work without (a) using spell check, (b) using grammar check, (c) verifying that your punctuation is correct and (d) reviewing your work for correct word usage and correctly structured sentences and paragraphs.
  8. You are expected to credit your sources using in-text citations and reference list entries. Both your citations and your reference list entries must follow a consistent citation style (APA, MLA, etc.). Note: you may use footnotes to credit sources when doing so will improve the readability of the deliverable.

What are the effects of European colonialism?
  1. What are the effects of European colonialism in [choose case/example]?

Assignment One must show evidence that you have thought about, and understood, the content of the relevant lectures and tutorials (i.e. see in particular weeks 1 and 2).

Assessment One Checklist

Your assessment should include:

A title (or front) page, which lists:

  • the course unit code: POLI20902,
  • the title of your chosen Research Question
  • your student number (to ensure anonymous marking)
  • your tutorial leader’s name,
  • The word count (the number of words in the text).

The main body should include:

  • A justification for your choice of research question (approx. 150-200 words)
  • This must be from the list of 47 available questions at the end of this course guide and on blackboard
  • When writing your justification, think about the following:
  • What are you interested in researching and why?
  • Is it an empirical or theoretical puzzle?
  • Why is this an important question to research?
  • How viable is it for a politics research project?

A short Annotated Bibliography related to your selected research question (1250-1000 words)

You must include at least 6 sources, all of which must be scholarly sources, This means articles published in scholarly peer-reviewed journals and books published by academic/university presses). Text books do not count. All sources must be in the English language (1250 – 1500 words).

When reading this literature and writing your bibliography, think about the following:

  • What is the existing literature on your topic?
  • What has been said before?
  • Who are the key scholars?
  • What is the “state of the art” today?
  • What are key themes or approaches?
  • What is the key debate/divide?
  • What non-academic/scholarly literature is available?
  • How does each source help you answer your question and how will it guide your research design?

Things to consider for each entry (i.e. each piece of literature):

  • What is the main argument/what is the main finding of the article/book/source?
  • What cases does this source utilize?
  • What methodology does it employ?
  • How does this source contribute to the debate?
  • How does this source help you refine your question? Or help you develop your own research project?
  • How is this source different from other sources you have used?

*you do not have to write the answer to each of these bullet points for each entry. Consider what the book/article/source’s most important contribution is to your RQ and about how the pieces link together. E.g. does it employ a different methodology to the others? Does it offer an answer to a different piece of the puzzle?

Concluding statement (100-150 words):

  • How will you continue to search for more literature – what other types of sources may you also require?
  • Revisit to your research question and ask yourself, based on what the literature discusses, do you need to further specify your question?
    • Do you need to specify a particular period of time?
    • Do you need to specify a case study?
    • Do you need to specify that you will use a comparative method?
