Critically examine approaches to learning and development. What improvements, if any, would you make and why?
Assessment Information – What you need to do
This assignment is an individual assignment.

This assignment requires you to answer 1 question

The assessment for this module is a critical essay of between 1500 words in length, on an organisation with which you are familiar with. You should select material from throughout the module, and should discuss your plans with the module tutor at an early stage to ensure that your focus is appropriate and sufficiently critical. You must use module concepts and texts as a foundation for your work.

With reference to your own organisation, or one with which you are familiar, or use the Employee Training and Development at Motorola case study. Critically examine approaches to learning and development. What improvements, if any, would you make and why?

The Critical Essay requires you to use the ideas, concepts, theories, frameworks and research findings studied to inform your evaluation. This is an in depth, critical piece of work so you should not spend time describing the theories. The assignment encourages you to take a strategic view of Learning and Development provision within your organisation or the case study and determine which elements of this provision are most in need of evaluation.

Criteria for Assessment – How you will be marked

The assessment will demonstrate your ability to:

Analysis of L&D provision in an organisation

  • You should not try to review all elements of provision, as this would produce an answer which sacrifices depth for breadth. Your answer should demonstrate:
  • An understanding of relevant conceptual and theoretical literature
  • The ability to prioritise 3-5 key L&D issues worthy of review
  • The ability to apply theoretical frameworks and concepts to your organisational context
  • The ability to translate the results of a systematic analysis into strategic implications

For the case study

  • Analyse a case-study
  • Comprehend and apply relevant models and theories to explain the issues raised
  • Offer realistic and practical solutions to organisational problems
  • Develop a logical argument, referring to evidence in support of it
  • Demonstrate the ability to critically interpret, synthesize and analyse the information presented as well as relevant models and theories

This assignment is designed to assess the following learning outcomes:

1)  Identify the individual components of systematic approach to L&D and critically examine the core underlying theories. (Case Study).

2)  Design and implement appropriate evaluation methods to assess the success and effectiveness of learning plans and interventions. (Case Study).

Assessment Details

The word count is 1500 words.

There will be a penalty of a deduction of 10% of the mark for work exceeding the word limit by 10% or more.

The word limit includes tables, figures, quotations and citations, but excludes the references list and appendices.

How to Submit your Assessment

·      Your coursework will be given a zero mark if you do not submit a copy through Turnitin. Please take care to ensure that you have fully submitted your work.

·      Please ensure that you have submitted your work using the correct file format, unreadable files will receive a mark of zero. The Faculty accepts Microsoft Office and PDF documents, unless otherwise advised by the module leader.

·      All work submitted after the submission deadline without a valid and approved reason will be subject to the University regulations on late submissions.

o   If an assessment is submitted up to 14 days late the mark for the work will be capped at the pass mark of 40 per cent for undergraduate modules or 50 per cent for postgraduate modules

o   If an assessment is submitted beyond 14 calendar days late the work will receive a mark of zero per cent

o   The above applies to a student’s first attempt at the assessment. If work submitted as a reassessment of a previously failed assessment task is submitted later than the deadline the work will immediately be given a mark of zero per cent

o   If an assessment which is marked as pass/fail rather than given a percentage mark is submitted later than the deadline, the work will immediately be marked as a fail

·      The University wants you to do your best. However, we know that sometimes events happen which mean that you can’t submit your coursework by the deadline – these events should be beyond your control and not easy to predict.  If this happens, you can apply for an extension to your deadline for up to two weeks, or if you need longer, you can apply for a deferral, which takes you to the next assessment period (for example, to the re-sit period following the main Assessment Boards). You must apply before the deadline. You will find information about applying for extensions and deferrals here.

·      Students MUST keep a copy and/or an electronic file of their assignment.

·      Checks will be made on your work using anti-plagiarism software and approved plagiarism checking websites.

Return of Marked Work

You can expect to have feedback returned to you on 24th May 2022. If for any reason there is a delay you will be kept informed. Marks and feedback will be provided online. It is important that you access the feedback you receive as this will help to make improvements to your later work, you can request a meeting with your Module Leader or Personal Tutor to discuss your feedback in more detail.

Marks will have been internally moderated only, and will therefore be provisional; your mark will be formally agreed later in the year once the external examiner has completed their review. More information on assessment and feedback can be found here.

Academic Integrity

In submitting a piece of work for assessment it is essential that you understand the University’s requirements for maintaining academic integrity and ensure that the work does not contravene University regulations. Some examples of behaviour that would not be considered acceptable include plagiarism, re-use of previously assessed work, collusion with others and purchasing your assignment from a third party. For more information on academic offences, bad academic practice, and academic penalties, please read chapter four of our academic regulations.

Academic Support and Your Well-being

Referencing is the process of acknowledging other people’s work when you have used it in your assignment or research. It allows the reader to locate your source material as quickly and easily as possible so that they can read these sources themselves and verify the validity of your arguments. Referencing provides the link between what you write and the evidence on which it is based.

You identify the sources that you have used by citing them in the text of your assignment (called citations or in-text citations) and referencing them at the end of your assignment (called the reference list or end-text citations). The reference list only includes the sources cited in your text. The main referencing guide can be found here and includes information on the basics of referencing and achieving good academic practice. It also has tabs for the specific referencing styles depending on whether you require Harvard style used in business or OSCOLA style used by the Law school.

The University has a wealth of support services available to students; further information can be obtained from Student Gateway, the Student Advice Centre, Library and Learning Services and, most importantly, your Personal Tutor. If you are struggling with your assessments and/or deadlines please do seek help as soon as possible so that appropriate support and guidance can be identified and put in place for you. More information can be found on the Healthy DMU pages.

IMPORTANT STATEMENTS

Standard Postgraduate Regulations

Your studies will be governed by the BCU Academic Regulations on Assessment, Progression and Awards. Copies of regulations can be found at  https://www.bcu.ac.uk/student-info/student-contract

For courses accredited by professional bodies such as the IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) there are some derogations from the standard regulations and these are detailed in your Programme Handbook

Cheating and Plagiarism

Both cheating and plagiarism are totally unacceptable and the University maintains a strict policy against them.  It is YOUR responsibility to be aware of this policy and to act accordingly. Please refer to the Academic Registry Guidance at https://icity.bcu.ac.uk/Academic-Services/Information-for-Students/Assessment/Avoiding-Allegations-of-Cheating

The basic principles are:

  • Don’t pass off anyone else’s work as your own, including work from “essay banks”. This is plagiarism and is viewed extremely seriously by the University.
  • Don’t submit a piece of work in whole or in part that has already been submitted for assessment elsewhere. This is called duplication and, like plagiarism, is viewed extremely seriously by the University.
  • Always acknowledge all of the sources that you have used in your coursework assignment or project.
  • If you are using the exact words of another person, always put them in quotation marks.
  • Check that you know whether the coursework is to be produced individually or whether you can work with others.
  • If you are doing group work, be sure about what you are supposed to do on your own.
  • Never make up or falsify data to prove your point.
  • Never allow others to copy your work.
  • Never lend disks, memory sticks or copies of your coursework to any other student in the University; this may lead you being accused of collusion.

By submitting coursework, either physically or electronically, you are confirming that it is your own work (or, in the case of a group submission, that it is the result of joint work undertaken by members of the group that you represent) and that you have read and understand the University’s guidance on plagiarism and cheating.

You should be aware that coursework may be submitted to an electronic detection system in order to help ascertain if any plagiarised material is present. You may check your own work prior to submission using Turnitin at the Formative Moodle Site.  If you have queries about what constitutes plagiarism, please speak to your module tutor or the Centre for Academic Success.

Electronic Submission of Work

It is your responsibility to ensure that work submitted in electronic format can be opened on a faculty computer and to check that any electronic submissions have been successfully uploaded. If it cannot be opened it will not be marked. Any required file formats will be specified in the assignment brief and failure to comply with these submission requirements will result in work not being marked.  You must retain a copy of all electronic work you have submitted and re-submit if requested.
