To what extent, if any, does increasing excise taxes have on alcohol consumption in OECD countries?

Title:

An analysis of the effects of excise taxes on alcohol consumption in OECD (The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries.

Overview of thesis:

This thesis focuses on the impact that excise taxes have on alcohol consumption, i.e. does increasing the taxes on alcohol goods (excise tax) result in people decreasing their consumption of alcohol, because the price is higher?

This is based on the law of demand, which states that’s as the price of a good goes up, the quantity demanded of a good goes down and people consume less of the good as a result. In this circumstance, we are examining when the price of alcohol goods go up, does consumption of alcohol goods go down?

NB the 2 alcohol categories of goods that will be examined in this thesis are beer and spirits (vodka, gin, etc.). Wine will not be examined as it is generally not associated with excessive levels of consumption. Please disregard wine in any of the journal articles, thank you.

Harvard referencing style. Spacing 1.5. page numbers.

Please use Graphs and tables from the journal articles// papers that are attached if possible

Abstract: This need to be re written in more academic language and improved (additional words)

Excessive alcohol consumption has been a significant contributor to diseases across countries in recent years. Consequently, it has resulted in striking healthcare costs and productivity losses. Economic literature has identified excise taxes as an effective fiscal instrument in addressing the excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages, which in turn has mitigated the associated health costs and implications. The primary objective of this dissertation is to empirically investigate the effect that excise taxes have on alcohol consumption in OECD nations. Utilising panel data analysis, the relative levels of excise taxes and their subsequent effects on alcohol consumption in OECD nations will be examined.

The Research Question of the thesis is:

To what extent, if any, does increasing excise taxes have on alcohol consumption in OECD

countries?

The Introduction should be written at the end when all the data is pulled together.

Strong introduction to grab the reader

Background and motivation

Function of background and motivation: The background and motivation section should establish the relevance of the study. In other words, why the thesis should be carried out. The background of the study relates the thesis with the prevailing literature and the research gap. It also depicts your motivation for the study

It should indicate your hypothesis and the assumptions with all the background logic.

For this thesis: the assumption is that increasing excise tax rates of alcoholic beverages, results in a decrease in consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Motivation: The importance of this thesis stems from the fact that alcohol is a major contributor to various forms of cancers in nations and results in a number of economic costs to society and has been shown to restrict activity in labour markets (unemployment, illness etc.).

Background: excise tax is an economic instrument that has shown to be effective in addressing the problem of alcohol consumption by reducing consumption. This decrease in consumption is characterised by fewer incidence of alcohol related cancers in countries that have increased excise tax rates on alcohol.

Please use roughly 5 academic journal articles//papers for the background and motivation section

NB Use articles from Group 1 and Group 2 ( See pages 5 and 6 of this word document)

Literature Review:

Function of a literature review: The literature review is an account of what has been published by researchers//scholars

It shows how the prevailing idea fits the thesis and how the thesis agrees or differs from other scholar’s research

It finds topics for future research

It should justify the choice of the chosen research question

Provide background information to understand the topic

Show how this dissertation is consistent with existing economic knowledge and show this dissertation is different

It should broaden the reader’s knowledge on the topic

For this thesis: The efficacy of excise taxes as an economic instrument should be examined using the economic journals attached

The excise tax rates ability to reduce alcohol consumption and subsequent cancer rates should be examined using the health/economics papers attached

Please use at least 10 academic journal articles//papers for the literature review. (10 journal articles for the literature review would be great)

NB Use articles from Group 1 and Group 2 ( See pages 5 and 6 of this word document)

Data And Methodology + Results = 3,500 – 4,000 words

Data and Methodology:

The data and methodology section focuses on panel data analysis using the STATA software. The empirical equation roughly is:

ACt = ETR1 + DI2

Where:

ACt = Alcohol consumption

ACt is the dependent variable and is an excel file (.csv). Alcohol consumption is defined as the annual sale of pure alcohol in litres per person aged 15 years and older

ETR1 = the excise tax rate per country.

ETR1 is an independent variable and is an excel file (.csv). The excise tax rate is defined as the tax rate per hectolitre of alcohol (H/L) levied on beer and spirit(s) based alcoholic goods. I need to clean this data set.

DI2= the disposable income. I am currently trying to find this data.

Note: I am in the process of finding all the necessary data and cleaning the data sets. I will provide you with all of the necessary data sets etc. as soon as possible

Results:

Interpretation of the results of the panel data analysis of the above variables.

Data And Methodology + Results = 3,500 – 4,000 words

Conclusion 250 words approx.

Describe and explain the theoretical tenets of quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches to research design.

Description Before we start, you need to keep in mind that this task has a draft component which means you MUST complete a draft copy a day or two before the due date so that any issues will be rectified before the final submission. The details Of the assessment piece will be uploaded, but very important pieces of information that you need to pay attention to are: 1. The LEARNING OUTCOME of this course which needs to be demonstrated in this research design are as follows; I Describe and explain the theoretical tenets of quantitative and qualitative methodological approaches to research design; ii Demonstrate skills in identifying and researching relevant literature and documents, including academic and empirical research and policy documents; iii Explain the theoretical principles underlying research question/s and research hypothesis/es and demonstrate an ability to construct appropriate research question/s and research hypotheses/es for a specified research project; iv Describe, explain and select an appropriate methodological approach and sampling strategy and design data collection instrument/s for a specified research project; v Describe and apply principles of ethical research; vi Report the key elements of a written research according to American Psychological Association guidelines; vii Be aware of the range, complexity and value of criminological research 2. The assessment piece comes with a template that guides how it should be written. It is important to follow this guide as it mirrors the marking criteria. The most important piece in this assessment is the PROCEDURE and MEASURES in the methodologies section. They both carry 20% each compared to the rest of the other section, which attracts 10%. You must ensure to be a lot more clear and more precise in filling the requirements in this section. 3. The Introduction of the research design NEEDS a review of empirical research examining the relationship between variables outlined in the research question. To guide the reader more closely, you could ever have a subsection in the introduction called a Literature review, but this is not a requirement but will help organise the paper.  4. You will need to do extensive research so that you are effectively and faithfully presenting the current ‘thinking’ in relation to each topic. Each key point you make needs to be validated with empirical research – this is what will validate your argument and makes your work informative. It would be best if you spent more time understanding what is required of you based on the marking criteria. This is not your regular standardised essay, even though it is in an essay format, but you will realise that you will be talking about things you will not talk about in a regular essay. So please use the book I will provide as a guide to help you fulfil the requirements, as this is the textbook we have used throughout this term. A link will be provided that will give you access to download, and you can keep it to use for future work as it is a PDF copy. Finally, the two topics you will have to choose from will be uploaded in a separate document. They will be i. Media and Youth Crime or Unemployment and Crime rate. All other documents will be uploaded. I advise you to go through each one of them as they will form what is required of you. Please feel free to contact me at any time. I will communicate with you via the message section, Thanks The number of sources has to be realistic with the word count.

Synthesise and demonstrate skills and competencies required for successful integrated management

Learning Outcome 1 – Synthesise and demonstrate skills and competencies required for successful integrated management

For this learning outcome, we adopted the Integrated Management Concept that Knut Bleicher developed (Wikipedia, 2021) as this concept encompasses the dimensions and mechanism that are appropriate for our project (Table 1 and Table 2).

Table 1 – Dimensions of Management

Normative Management
Determines the general aim of the organization.
Strategic Management
Directs the plans, basic structures, systems, and the problem-solving behaviour of the staff for achieving it
Operational Management
Translates the normative missions and strategic programs into day-to-day organizational processes.

Extracted from: Integrated Management Concept, Wikipedia, 2021.

Table 2 – Integration Mechanisms

Meta-Integration
Based on the management and business philosophy which defines the company’s consideration of and relation to its stakeholders’ values.
Vertical Integration
Achieved throughout the three management dimensions by means of structures, activities, and behaviour.

·       Structures describe the translation of corporate governance into effective management and efficient processes.

·       Activities refer to the development and application of corporate policies, strategic programmes, and operational tasks.

·       Behaviour relates to defining roles that ensure that the company’s culture and normative values are put into practice.

Horizontal Integration
Aligning the structures, activities, and behaviour throughout the distinct management dimensions.

Extracted from: Integrated Management Concept, Wikipedia, 2021.

Discussions and consultations on the scope of the project, schedule and the composition of the Project Team, were conducted with the stakeholders (Table 3). All stakeholders understood the necessity and benefits of this project since the impressions of the two fatal accidents which involved lifting operations in 2019 were still in their minds. A good mix of enthusiastic representatives formed the strong project team with the HSE Manager’s suggestion to include the subcontractors. The project team also has subject matter experts in risk management, lifting operations and tower crane operations on hand to provide guidance. All appointments in the project team and RA team has a leader and deputy in place, and all trainings have a primary and secondary trainer as back-up to ensure the smooth running of the project.

Table 3 – Discussions and Consultations

A kick-off meeting lead by the Managing Director and attended by all stakeholders, was initiated to keep all informed of the project, the common aims, objectives and benefits to the company, project and subcontractors. The project also consulted the appropriate stakeholders though discussions with the tower crane operators and lifting crews in informal settings, and the HSE Manager arranged a site visit for observations and discussions to have a different perspective on tower crane lifting safety.

As communication is an important attribute, the study provides regular updates through the Daily Progress Reports & Milestone Progress Reports (Appendix 1). A WhatsApp group was also created to provide immediate group communication. The project team also held Focus Meetings (Appendix 2) to update on the progress and schedule, discussed on the project including challenges, and distribution of the tasks ahead. The Project Admin circulated the minutes of the meeting to all key stakeholders to keep them informed of the project.

Perform a multistage growth dividend discount model (DDM) using the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) to calculate the cost of equity.

Assessment Instructions

You are an investment manager, and your client would like to invest her/his money in a company that has listed shares on major stock exchanges. You are required to write a report on the company that the client is interested in investing in. You may assume that the client has an understanding of the risk involved in investing in shares.

You will be allocated a publicly listed company. You are expected to produce an investment report and recommendation on the shares of this company. This should include the following sections.

  • Company profile: a single paragraph giving an overview of the company summarising its performance over the last twelve months, its products and the markets in which it operates. The remainder of the first page would summarise data on price performance and valuations. It would end with your recommendation on whether to buy, sell or hold the shares in the company.
  • Performance and news analysis: Compare the company’s returns with that of the market as well as calculating the company’s risk adjusted return Identify news (which include earnings announcements, release of relevant economic data, analysts’ recommendations) which are relevant to the firm’s price performance as well as supporting your analysis in the report.
  • Valuation: Perform a multistage growth dividend discount model (DDM) using the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) to calculate the cost of equity. Use Price multiples such as PE (Price to earnings), PB (Price to Book) and PS (Price to Sales) and DY (Dividend Yield) metrics to complement the DDM valuation. The valuation results are to be presented using the security market line (SML). Finally, a discussion on the DDM versus price multiples to inform the client is required.

Conclusion: This will demonstrate your understanding of the subject and ability to include the results in a coherent summary

Assessment aims:

  • To think critically and examine the investment in question from a number of perspectives, and concepts, and present good arguments.
  • To write a professional report and communicate with clarity and coherence.
  • To apply theoretical concepts studied throughout the module .
  • To evaluate the reaction of the company’s share price to financial news and to the index.
