Discuss to what extent do modern ideas about the city inform the portrayal of Amsterdam in the novel? Give illustration(s) from the text.
  1. Deborah Moggach’s Tulip Fever is a historical novel mainly set in 17th century Amsterdam. Present an analysis of the novel. Some suggested topics:
  • Research the status and reputation of Amsterdam in the 17th century and give a concise account of your findings, including sources.
  • Explore the portrait of the Dutch 17th century city she presents in the novel: what significant features or themes are highlighted or emphasized and how? What significant elements are left out (and, if relevant, why)? Give illustrations from the text wherever possible.
  • Discuss to what extent do modern ideas about the city inform the portrayal of Amsterdam in the novel? Give illustration(s) from the text.
  • Discuss the function of the colour-reproductions that have been added to the book. How do they relate to the story?
  • Explore to what extent the novel illustrates Georg Simmel’s characterization of metropolitan life (in ‘The Metropolis and Mental Life’).
Research the phenomenon ‘Condition of England’-novels and give a concise account of its characteristics. Acknowledge your sources.
  1. Elizabeth Gaskell’s North and South is one of the ‘Condition of England’-novels. Select at least two passages from the novel, at least one urban scene and one rural scene, and analyse these extracts in detail. In doing so you could:
  • Research the phenomenon ‘Condition of England’-novels and give a concise account of its characteristics. Acknowledge your sources.
  • Relate the extracts to the general characteristics of the ‘Condition of England’-novels you listed.
  • Compare and contrast the portrayal of city and countryside; what significant features are highlighted or emphasized? What is left out?
  • Relate the extracts to the wider issues of 19th century urbanisation and the Victorian ideas about the countryside.
  • Does the novel illustrate Georg Simmel’s characterization of metropolitan life (in ‘The Metropolis and Mental Life’) in any way(s)?
add your own detailed analysis, provide biographical and historical background where relevant and make clear which aspect of life in the wilderness each extract illustrates and what it says (or suggests) about their attitude towards the wilderness.
  1. Select three entries (one day each) from the Lewis & Clark Diaries [ http://lewisandclarkjournals.unl.edu/index.html ] that illustrate different aspects of their dealing with life in the Wilderness. For example, the extracts could relate to their treatment of the native population, their attitude towards flora and fauna, their scientific work, the hazards of life in the wilderness, etc. Provide the full text of the entry, contextualise and (if necessary) annotate the extracts (this may require further research). Then add your own detailed analysis, provide biographical and historical background where relevant and make clear which aspect of life in the wilderness each extract illustrates and what it says (or suggests) about their attitude towards the wilderness. You could also relate the extracts to the Pioneer-picture that Walt Whitman presents in his ‘Pioneers! O Pioneers’ and / or Jackson Turner’s frontier theory.
To what extent can each painting be related to the wider issues of the Pastoral and /or Urbanisation in the 19th or 20th century?
  1. Select two or more paintings or posters that were inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and discuss how they chooses to present the theme(s) of the play. Your paper should contain:
  • A high quality reproduction of the paintings that will allow detailed scrutiny
  • Biographical information on the painter(s)
  • For each painting a description and analysis of the scene from the play the painter chose for his subject. Who are in it, what is its significance, etc.?
  • A full analysis and interpretation of the painting(s), which should address questions such as:
  • Why was this particular scene selected?
  • To what extent is the painting / poster faithful to the play?
  • How to explain & interpret possible changes that the painter / designer made?
  • What is the nature of the city or forest scene portrayed?
  • To what extent can each painting be related to the wider issues of the Pastoral and /or Urbanisation in the 19th or 20th century? To illustrate points one or two other paintings (not necessarily by the same artist) may be brought into the discussion, but only to highlight particular issues. However, your first choice of painting should remain the focal point of your paper.
  • A compare and contrast discussion of the paintings selected: what are the most striking similarities and differences? Can these be related to the period(s) in which the paintings / posters were created?

ASSESSMENT THREE: RESEARCH INSTRUMENT – Research Report – DATA SHEET – REPORT

Task Length: Report – 2000 words (+-10%)
Task Type Individual
Value 40%

PART A:

On the basis of the presentation feedback, please amend and finalize your Questionnaire for collecting primary data. (This task is an extension of assignment 2). Part Three assessments 3a and 3b are related to the primary research undertaken by the student.

Task Requirements:

  • Design the primary data collection Tool – Questionnaire
  • Do not use predesigned questionnaire formats from any web sources or platforms.
  • Design the questionnaire using different question format.
  • Align the questions with the objectives identified in the research proposal (assignment 2B)

PART B:

This part will help the students to build their understanding regarding the various descriptive and statistical analysis tools and concepts needed to interpret their primary data. Microsoft Excel’s statistical analysis tool pack will be used for this purpose.

The student will sort, code and tabulate the primary data collected by means of the questionnaire (designed) and show the workings of the data analysis carried out on their primary data.

Various statistical and data analysis techniques learned during the course will be applied to arrive at the findings of the research. These findings will then be interpreted and discussed, and recommendations will need to be given.

A comprehensive report addressing all the components of the research will need to be presented.

Tentative report structure will be as follows:

explain what might have happened during planetary accretion to cause the earth to be depleted in light gases. Describe any supporting evidences.

Explainining a Non-Chondritic Silicate Earth

Table 2.6 (Rollinson,2007,p67) summarizes the difference between the composition of the silicate Earth and chondrites. For each group of elements, the table indicates whether the elements are depleted or enriched(relative to chondrite) in the silicate earth and briefly indicates the fractionation process that caused the difference.

Your task in this assignment is to expand on the fractionation process in each case . For example, you will explain what might have happened during planetary accretion to cause the earth to be depleted in light gases. Describe any supporting evidences.

Discuss Warren Buffett’s views.

DISCUSSION TOPIC 9 (2 pages)

  • ANSWER THE QUESTION IN ONE PAGE
  • ON THE SECOND PAGE MAKE 2 GENERAL COMENTS ON THE WORK YOU DID ON THE FIRST PAGE, DO NOT USE REFERECES FOR THE COMMENTS.

19 December 2000 an article appeared in The Wall Street Journal discussing stock price declines that followed share repurchases made by AT&T, Intel, Microsoft, and Hewlett-Packard.  The article mentions that Warren Buffett, chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, criticized firms that engaged in share repurchases. In a letter to shareholders, Buffett noted that share repurchases made sense during the mid-1970s, when many stocks traded below their intrinsic value. However, he argued that conditions changed during the bull market of the 1990s, even though share repurchases had become much more frequent. He also suggested that the motivation for share repurchases had also changed, and that during the 1990s firms bought back their shares in order to pump up their stock prices. Discuss Warren Buffett’s views.

Discuss this statement and suggest how managers can better improve their ability to eliminate biases in their forecasting.
  1. “Since capital budgeting decisions involve the estimation of a project’s future cash flows and the rate at which they should be discounted is still a relatively subjective process, the behavioral traits of managers still affect this process.” Discuss this statement and suggest how managers can better improve their ability to eliminate biases in their forecasting.
