Diversity Case Study Analysis
In 2003, clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) was sued by current and past members of its sales force as well as by applicants who were denied jobs, all of whom claimed racial discrimination.ÿ
The plaintiffs, in a class action lawsuit that grew to include 10,000 claimants, alleged that A&F favored whites in a variety of ways in order to project an image of A&F?s ?classic American? look. Plaintiffs alleged that people of color were discouraged from applying for positions visible to the public and were instead steered to stockroom jobs. The suit was eventually settled in 2005 for $40 million, providing at least some evidence of a lack of diversity in the retailer?s operations. This lack of diversity consciousness is similarly relevant to the decisions A&F made in 2002 before the lawsuit was filed. A&F opted to produce a line of T-shirts designed to poke fun at particular ethnic groups.ÿ More recently, A&F was sued by a young Muslim woman who was denied employment because she wears a headscarf because of religious beliefs.ÿThe case rests on Title VII of the Civil Rights Actÿ(Links to an external site.), which makes it illegal to “fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual … because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.”ÿ
ÿIn June 2015 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the job applicant, noting that A&F had violated provisions of the Civil Rights Act in failing to hire an otherwise well-qualified applicant because of her religious affiliation.
In a paper of NO MORE THAN 2,100 words (exclusive of title, abstract and reference pages), analyze the case of Abercrombie & Fitch. Begin by conducting an Internet search for news articles about the 2003 lawsuit, the offensive t-shirts, and 2015 case before the Supreme Court. Then, address the following questions:

What patterns do you see in A&F?s treatment of individuals from non-majority backgrounds?
What ethical issues are associated &F?s behavior?ÿ Explain which ethical principle or principles the company has violated and which ethical theory or theories you think makes for the best analysis of the situation.
The 2003 lawsuit against A&F was legally well-founded (in terms of the outcome), but was the lawsuit ethically well-founded?ÿ Why or why not?ÿ How about the 2015 court case?ÿ What legal and ethical principles are involved in this more recent lawsuit involving the right to wear a religious head covering?
What has A&F done to respond to the lawsuits and to the other challenges to its corporate practices related to treatment of minority groups?ÿ To what extent do you believe A&F?s actions have been sufficient?ÿ What evidence can you find that A&F has changed its corporate practices?
Would diversity training based in deontology or utilitarianism or virtue ethics help to prevent such insensitivity from happening in a company such as A&F?ÿ Why or why not?

WU Economics Market Structure in Economy Competition Discussion

Natural MonopoliesA natural monopoly is an industry in which the most efficient number of firms serving the market is one. Generally, these industries have substantial fixed costs that generate large economies of scale. For example, consider a local water service provider. If only one provider serves a residential area, only one set of water mains/pipes are needed. If multiple providers serve the area, multiple mains/pipes are needed, likely doubling the cost of providing the same degree of water service to the neighborhood. Typically, investor-owned natural monopolies deemed providers of essential services to a local area, such as local water, natural gas, electricity or garbage companies, are regulated by a Public Utilities Commission (PUC). The PUC normally sets prices or tariffs the utility is allowed to charge, equal to cost plus a normal return on investment. In this Discussion, you will revisit an industry from the Week 3 Discussion and discuss which type of market structure it is, how firms in this industry compete, and whether or not some firms can profit in this industry in the long run.Post an explanation of your selected industry?s market structure, including support for your assertion. In your explanation, also address the following:

(2014a)REQUIREMENTS:ETHICAL ISSUE BRIEF INSTRUCTIONS Prof. WestPURPOSEThis written assignment intends to provide practical experience in policymaking from an ethical standpoint.  It is due on or before __________ (midnight US Eastern time), and must be submitted via Blackboard. This assignment requires use of the standard format for a policy memorandum.  The format is designed to help high-level executives make a good decision about an issue under extreme information and time constraints.  In this case, the course instructor will be playing the role of executives; you will provide the briefing in written form. The policy memo type is the decision-making memorandum, which can be used for problem identification and agenda setting, policy formulation, or policy implementation decisions.FORMATThe first and perhaps most important rule is that the memorandum in its entirety cannot exceed 3 pages.  You should use standard 1-inch margin settings (left, right, top, bottom).  The font should be Arial 11. Use single-spacing within paragraphs, and a double space between paragraphs.  The footer of the page should include page numbers.  (This instruction document follows these formatting conventions.) Since this is not a formal research paper, only brief in-text references with source and date are required, such as ?(Centers for Disease Control, 2013) or ?(New York Times, 3 January 2014)? Use quotation marks if it is necessary to use a direct quote, but in general a lot of quoted excerpts aren?t appropriate for this brief format.TOPICSSince this is a class in Public Administration ethics, your topic should relate to an ethical issuerequiring government action. Check with the instructor if you are unsure about the suitability of a topic.  You have only 3 pages here, so don?t pick too big a topic. While the policy memorandum is typically focused on an executive decision, you can also discuss topics for legislative action, where the executive would take the lead in trying to set the agenda for legislators. SECTIONSA decision-making memorandum has 5 standard sections, and your memo should as well.   (Note that the 5th is merely a set of checkboxes.)  The sample is on the next page.  Sample:ETHICAL POLICY MEMORANDUM FOR: West (maybe President West, Governor West, Mayor West, Director West)FROM: [your name] (don?t forget to put this!)DATE: March 15, 2016SUBJECT: [your topic]1. Action-Forcing EventSpecify the nature of the situation, issue, or problem requiring or suggesting action and the degree of flexibility associated with it (e.g., whether immediate action is needed). Be sure to address the inherent ethical issue.2. Background/AnalysisOutline the current status and relevant history of the action-forcing event.  Provide a succinct assessment of essential information about the key issues, principal actors, and primary constituencies (stakeholders) affected by the action-forcing event so that an informed, well-justified, and persuasive decision can be made. The action-forcing event can sometimes be summarized in a sentence or two, but the background/analysis section can be anywhere from paragraphs to pages long.  Ideally this section presents enough evidence that it is conceivable to build a consensus among key stakeholders on a particular action.3. Policy Option(s)Summarize options stating the advantages and disadvantages of each possible proposal. If there is only one recommended option, then this section is not necessary and the Recommendations section alone will suffice.  Each option should spell out the pros and cons (unless that is provided in the Recommendation section), and should address the corresponding ethical ramifications.4. Recommendation(s)Indicate a single recommendation or list options. Identify and summarize the most important benefits and costs of each option, if this was not done in the prior section.  Identify likely support, opposition and criticisms of each option from various stakeholders. Explain why your recommendation is the most ethical approach.
