For these assignments I ask you to look around your world and “pick” an artwork that reflects the ideas we have covered in class and “post” it to your small group discussion board.  This assignment helps you to apply your knowledge outside of the classroom and to appreciate how much art surrounds us in our everyday life. OverviewNo matter where you live, I can assure you that you are surrounded by public art.  The University of Florida’s campus, for example, is filled with sculptures, murals and monuments. Gainesville has murals throughout the city and sculptures in many squares and on many street corners. The same is true of most towns in America. These monuments, murals, and large public installations recall the artworks we studied in our textbook, but we often just pass right by them. Well, it’s time that we paid attention! For this assignment, each of you will select a public artwork from your community and analyze it.  You should spend some time looking at the artwork and photograph it from at least three angles. Think about how the artwork fits into its environs (or doesn’t) and how it operates visually to communicate a message to the community.InstructionsFor this assignment, complete the following steps:Take at least three photographs of your chosen artwork from different angles in order to capture the artwork in its context.*Write a short analysis of this public artwork modeled after the type of analysis done in the lectures.Reply to this discussion, embed your three images, and write your analysis.  (Please read the note below about embedding images)Build from visual qualities using the elements and principles terms.Start with the most general: the subject matter, medium, and general composition,then the scale (size) and proportion (relative size to surroundings and relative size between figures in composition),Finally an analysis of the content (the meaning of the work).
