In what ways does decentralization seem to be contributing to development in at least some of India’s states?

The relationship between the government and the economy based on this case is in context to the government’s regulations on women’s roles in society and the economy. The government only lightened restrictions on the roles women could have when it benefited the economy. In the 1990s more roles needed to be filled in order to support the economy so the government opened up more roles to women that weren’t previously allowed. It is fully possible for women to achieve full equality while they produce children. It should be a choice whether or not women want to bear children. However, when they do, there are systems in place like maternity leave which allows women to work while also raising children. Equal opportunity should not depend on whether or not the person can bear children. It doesn’t seem like the state has interests in equality aside from economic production. This is because the restrictions on women have only been lifted in times where women are needed for the economy. The rights were then restricted when the government decided they could. This has gone back and forth multiple times and it seems as if the main motivation is for economic needs.

While other countries like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand have already adopted this policy, it is extremely progressive in terms of equality for transgender people. This is definitely different from the case study on Iran. In Iran, equality was only granted when it supported the country economically. There is no economic benefit for the United States from allowing people to choose the gender X on their passport. It is simply a progressive move to me more inclusive of transgender people on government documents. This is far more progressive and equal in terms of gender equality than in Iran. In Iran there is still significant struggle to obtain women’s rights. It seems almost impossible that in such a conservative state as Iran that they would allow nonbinary people to identify that way on government documents. In fact LGBTQ+ matters are extremely sensitive in Islamic cultures and are often punished. Overall, the United States is more progressive in terms of gender equality.
