Two large UK contractors have not performed well in recent years namely Balfour Beatty plc and Kier
Group plc.

Using publicly available company accounts, reports, academic literature, other material you can find and
your own calculations:-
i) Make an assessment of the company’s current financial position noting in particular any strategic financial
weaknesses of both the construction part of the business and the group as a whole (where construction does
not constitute the whole part of the business. (30% of the marks)
ii) Using academic literature together with other material, propose THREE major changes the company
should make (financial or otherwise) in order to significantly improve its overall strategic financial position
(40% of the marks)
iii) Draw conclusions from your analysis and proposals both to summarize what you have found in parts i)
and ii) and to make a judgment about the company’s long-term prospects (20% of the marks)
iv) Ensure that your work is well presented and properly referenced and conforms in all respects with
guidelines already given to you or available on MOODLE (10% of the marks)
While there must necessarily be a certain minimum level of descriptive material it is expected that most of
the content will be analytical material and significant academic literature will be referenced.
