What factors lead to increased income disparity between economic classes?
Government Control of Wealth vs. Individual Control of Wealth and Income Disparity between Economic Classes are often topics of discussion in the media resulting in angry protests covered by network news throughout the world. Wealth is often defined as a person’s assets including: income, savings, credit, investments, property, and material goods. A person’s occupation, family, or social status are frequently major factors in his or her ability or opportunity to acquire wealth. Income Disparity is defined as the difference in the amount of wealth in different economic classes in a society. In A World of Ideas, you have been assigned to read the following essays: “Communist Manifesto” p. 279-301 “Gospel of Wealth” p. 304-318, and “Why the Rich are getting Richer” p. 337-350. These essays describe control of wealth and income disparity. In a Compare and Contrast essay of at least five full pages, discuss these writer’s views on government control of wealth or income disparity among economic classes. Please support your thesis with several pieces of evidence (quotes) from the assigned essays. Areas for discussion may include: Shared or differing views on government control of wealth What factors lead to increased income disparity between economic classes? What are the effects of income disparity on the individual worker and society? What proposed solutions to income disparity are discussed? Role of technology and industrialization Role of gender, age, or ethnicity in income disparity Role of social/economic class and education in economic opportunity Your essay must include the following elements: Five full pages of text plus MLA formatted Works Cited Page. An introduction paragraph containing at least ten sentences of background information to prepare your reader for your thesis statement. A thesis statement indicating the essay’s topic, purpose, and structure. The thesis should be the last sentence of the introduction paragraph and be highlighted. Body paragraphs of at least ten sentences each which provide details and examples (quotes from the essays) of at least ten sentences providing closure to your essay. A restatement of the main idea of the essay is often appropriate. Your essay must conform to the following manuscript requirements: Type as a Word document and submit through Canvas by assigned deadline. Use 12 font Times New Roman with a 1-inch margin on all four sides. Use left justification for all text including the name block and 2.0 spacing throughout the entire essay. Do not add extra spacing in between each paragraph. Each paragraph should begin with a 5-space Tab. Place a page number in the upper right-hand corner of each page. The name block is placed on the left side and should include: your name, English 101, Culture, and the due date. Place a centered title (12 font, no bold) two spaces below the name block and two spaces above the introduction paragraph. Do not include a separate title page. Include properly formatted MLA style citations after each quote or other type of borrowed source in the essay. The three assigned essays from A World of Ideas are required sources. You need to borrow and cite material from each of these essays. Include a properly formatted MLA style Works Cited Page with an entry for each of your sources, the four assigned essays plus any other outside sources.
