For this writing assignment, you will choose 1 photograph from a contemporary photographer you have read/ talked about in class. You can use any of the past reading assignments, lecture slides, or screenings to select your artist and photograph. (attached is a past reading you may use. please use the artwork here: Nona Faustine’s From Her Body Sprang Their Greatest Wealth, 2013. this is found on page 34 of the reading attatched) Description- This is a writing assignment used to assess your ability to evaluate photographs in the context of contemporary and historical practice using formal, technical, and conceptual criteria. You will describe and analyze a photograph based on observation and research; identify the concept and meaning of the work; and describe how it will inspire your own related photographs. Formatting, Photograph, and Bibliography (20 points) ● Use MLA standards throughout the paper, as well as bibliography (see handout on MLA guidelines from Penfield). ● Heading. Use the title of the project as the main heading and the title of the photograph as the subheading. ● Photograph from project. Use a high quality image, around 1500 – 2000 pixels on the long dimension. Properly cite your photograph. ● Paragraphs (5) must be labeled with proper heading. ● Consider overall flow and thesis statement for readability and cohesion. ● Text and photo sources must be cited in text and on the works cited page. ● Word count (500-700). Use these Sections to format your paper: 1. Photograph: At the beginning, include 1 photo from the series (figure 1.) Include title, date, and media. 2. Introduction: An introductory paragraph on your inspired by artist that includes a short bio, the name of the photographic series, dates, the concept, and art historical/social context of the work created. (20 points) 3. Technique/Form: (20 points) a. Technique: primary technical aspects (include media) b. Form: primary formal aspects 4. Concept: Describe the meaning of the photo based on your research, including citations. Evaluate how the technical and formal aspects support the concept. (20 points) 5. Inspiration and Concept: Describe how you are inspired by the artist’s work through technique, form, and/or concept, as well as what your concept will be in your own series. (20 points) 6.
