Research Topic:
To Investigate How the Rise of Social Media Use May Potentially Affect the Risk of Unrealistic Beauty Standards and Body Image Issues in Both Female and Male Malaysian Young Adults
The assignment for Dissertation: Research Project Chapter 1 is the first chapter that should be considered in thoroughly understanding the given research dissertation topic of interest.
The given research topic is entirely based from a Malaysian context. The given research topic only focuses on young adults (female and male) within a Malaysian population.
The construction and format of Chapter 1 must all be based from the attached research proposal.
The attached research proposal significantly will guide and help you with writing the whole of Chapter 1: Problem and Its Background.
I have completed the research proposal of the Dissertation/Research Project topic. It is important to always follow the proposal and write Chapter 1 according to what the proposal states.
Please take the time to carefully and cautiously read the research proposal in order to fully understand the research project and in writing Chapter 1.
You may use the content and information from the research proposal into Chapter 1 so that the research project flows and links together.
As a way to help you structure Chapter 1: Problem and Its Background, these are the main specific subheadings that you must have within Chapter 1:
1. Introduction:
• This part presents the background information about the problem and the pressing situations that prompted the researcher to work on the topic.
• The introduction needs to fully support the researcher’s intention to study the chosen topic.
2. Statement of the Problem:
• This part presents the general (major) problem stated in declarative form.
• This usually bears the title of your thesis.
• Under the general problem are the research questions stated in question forms.
• These research questions must lead to the same direction – to answer the general problem.
3. Objectives of the Study:
• The intent of the research expressed through the formulation of objectives which are the breakdown of the research problem, stated in the infinitive TO + (action words in research) such as examine, analyse, determine, measure, assess, evaluate, recommend, find out, among others; setting 2-3 research objectives is ideal for a research problem.
4. Framework of the Study (Two Parts):
• Theoretical Framework makes use of a theory or theories in explaining why a certain phenomenon, the subject of the study occurred.
– Basically, a theory is a set of concepts and their relations which explains, predicts, and interprets how a particular phenomenon exists and operates.
• Conceptual Framework has the same function as the theoretical framework. The difference lies in the types of concepts which they use.
– While the theoretical framework makes use of abstract concepts, the conceptual framework utilises and explores specific themes or issues well-related to the research problem.
5. Assumption:
• It is an educated or intelligent guess or prediction about the existence, attribute, or relationship between variables (characteristics or phenomena) covered by a study. It will be either supported, rejected or needs further exploration.
6. Significance of the Study:
• The significant contributions of the research to various sectors/groups for which the research is intended.
7. Scope and Delimitation of the Study:
• The scope discusses the parameters of the study (of what is going to be covered by the research); while delimitation presents the weaknesses of the study.
8. Definition of Terms:
• The operational definition of terms must be used – terms are defined in the context of the study.
• Only terms that are important must be defined to provide better understanding of the work at hand.
• Terms defined must be arranged in alphabetical order. Synonymous definition of terms should not be used.
