How has social media activism shaped the growth of the movement, and is it potential for change?
#Me Too Movement- Tarana Burke
Pertinent to the unit’s project, I chose to focus on the #Metoo social movement which emerged in 2006 but trended more from 2013 to 2018. The #Metoo movement was driven by the exposure of rampant sexual abuse incidences that had rocked different workspaces and ideally intended to break the silence and empower sexually assaulted victims through solidarity, empathy as well as the strength in numbers to publicize the rampant evil deeds, and showcase sexual assault to be a monster that still exists in the present-day workplace (Lee, 2018).
When breaking down the movement, the project will focus on Tarana Burke who was its founder (Tippett, 2018), with an aim of assessing the impact that she has had in the fight against sexual assault. Complimentary to this, the three issues that I will develop in the presentation are, origins of the #me too movement, how has social media activism shaped the growth of the movement, and is it potential for change? To begin with, the origins of the #me too movement will seek to ascertain the fundamental purpose of the social movement and its founding members/premise. Secondly, the social media activism element will seek to determine how social media has transformed the manner in which social activism is conducted in the 21st century, with an aim of identifying its outreach and impact. The final segment will assess if there is any tangible change with regards to sexual assault statistics that can be credited to the identified social movement.
