Interpreting Ephesians

You are allowed to choose a passage of your preference from anywhere in Ephesians. Your passage should contain a complete idea or story. You should not start in the middle of something or cut a unit off early. Generally, your selection should be at least 3 verses long but no longer than 10 verses. If you have any questions selecting a passage, just check with your instructor.

Once you have chosen your passage. You will want to read it closely, attending to its overall flow, the structure of sentences, key nouns, key verbs, and any important descriptive elements. Then you will want to consider the four contexts (immediate, literary, cultural-historical, and canonical) and see how they may inform your understanding of the passage. Remember that you can draw on the videos on “Literary Styles in the Bible,” “Cultures in and of the Bible,” and “The Story of the Bible” to help provide some material for these various contexts.

A brief introduction that identifies your passage and explains why you chose it.

A section that explores the details of the passage’s flow, sentence structure, nouns, verbs, and descriptors.

A section that explains the passage more fully by using two of the following contexts with connections to details in the passage: immediate, literary, historical-cultural, and canonical.

A short conclusion that states your main takeaway from your interpretive work and how that point may apply to our time and place.

Crime and Punishment

1. Dante shows anger in Circle 5, which is where anger and sullenness are punished.
Virgil, however, praises Dante for being angry by hugging him and calling him
indignant soul,” ll. 43-45, Canto 7. Why is Dante’s anger considered “good,” while
the anger of the sinners in Circle 5 is “bad”?
2. The City of Dis in Cantos 8 and 9 separates upper Hell from lower Hell. The sins of
upper Hell are sins of “incontinence”— lust, gluttony, anger, and avarice (greed for
more wealth) or prodigality (wasting wealth). Define “incontinence” in your own
words.
3. The sins of lower Hell are sins of malice, that is, violence, fraud, and betrayal. Why
are sins of lower Hell worse than the sins of incontinence in upper Hell?
4. In Dante’s Hell, the principle of punishment is called contrapasso, which means that
the punishment perfectly “fits the crime.” Explain this principle in your own words
and give an example from Circles 4, 5, or 6.

Note: CONTRAPASSO means, Dante made up this word for his punishments- nature of sins, bad consequences. Right people object to Dante’s visit weight.
