Psychology of Goal Setting

After compiling the readings for you will write a reflective essay which provides a synthesis of the material, personalization and insight gained, and implications for practice. (Links below of readings)

explore schizophrenia further by imagining your reaction to someone experiencing auditory hallucinations.

Imagine that you enter the copy room in your office building, and a 20-something coworker is pacing back and forth in front of the photocopier and pulling at her hair in an agitated manner. She is mumbling “Don’t, don’t” and “I protect my soul.” She looks at you and says, “Protect your soul.” You glean from the exchange that she perceives the photocopier takes people’s souls. Delusions like this—in other words, beliefs outside the realm of reality that persist despite evidence to the contrary—signify psychosis. Hallucinations, meaning seeing or hearing things that others do not, are also part of psychosis These psychotic symptoms are also associated with schizophrenia, a serious mental health issue characterized by loss of contact with reality. It may be difficult to reason with someone in this state. So, what do you do?

In this Discussion, you explore schizophrenia further by imagining your reaction to someone experiencing auditory hallucinations.

To Prepare

Review your course announcements for possible information related to this week’s Discussion and Assignment.

Review the videos on schizophrenia and auditory hallucinations.

By Day 4

Post your reflection on the videos showing the experiences of people with schizophrenia. Then, with these resources in mind, explain your crisis response if you encountered someone hearing voices in your professional role. Why is it particularly important to demonstrate empathy and validate their experience of the voices?

Elizabethan Poor Law

Describe briefly the terms/basic facts of the Elizabethan poor law and its implementation into practice.

➢ Name the political party under which it was brought in; theorize the political agenda at play at the time and the ideological basis for the policy; name what dominant societal values and assumptions were reflected in this policy.

➢ Describe the circumstances that led to its change/replacement/elimination.

➢ Discuss how this policy is still evident today.

➢ Explain why you chose this policy to historically review.

➢ Critically analyze how this policy has affected your region.

➢ What can you take from this learning, forward into your social work practice

Decision Making/System Security

You are a manager of a respiratory therapy department. One of your employees is registered in ALHE 4230, one of the courses required in the BASAH program. The employee is writing a paper on the different factors associated with COPD. The employee downloads information from the hospital database and saves it to a thumbdrive. The patient information is later accessed at home when the paper is being written.

You are alerted by the hospital compliance department that one of your employees has accessed information on patients. When you confront the employee, the employee says that she understands the rules of privacy, but because the information was used for the purposes of research, it is permissible. Further, she says that there was no way that a patient can be identified, as all of the names were removed.

Questions for discussion:

Is the employee correct? Why or why not?

If not, what course of action should you take as the department manager?
