First Steps on Becoming a Grassroots Lobbyist/Advocate for Health Care Policy

This assignment has two parts, numbered below. Write each question as a new topic area, then follow with a paragraph or two to answer the question. You may find it necessary to search for answers to the questions outside of the assigned reading.

Tasks:
Imagine that you are going to make a visit to your representative in Congress. Develop a one-page document that supports your position on the AHCA that you would leave with your representative or his or her aide when you make your visit. This one-pager, also called a “leave behind,” should state your position clearly in bullet points and give your reasons why your position is preferred. This “leave behind” should have 1 inch margins and utilize 14-point font throughout. If you were making this visit in person, you would present your “leave behind” to the person with whom you speak during your visit. Include a second page that describes your rationale for the position in your “leave behind” page supported by at least two journal articles.
Write a two-page brief to describe the scenario surrounding your legislative visit. Understanding the political affiliation of your representative, include answers to the following:
Was your member in support or in opposition to the AHCA?
State three points that you would cover in support or opposition to your representative’s position.
How does your nursing experience influence the advocacy position that you take on the AHCA?

Racial & Criminal Profiling

Part I
The Uniform Crime Reports page on the FBI government Web site provides links for their annual Crime in the United States publications. Before you are able to view one of these reports, you are given the following disclaimer:

Caution Against Ranking

Each year when Crime in the United States is published, some entities use reported figures to compile rankings of cities and counties. These rough rankings provide no insight into the numerous variables that mold crime in a particular town, city, county, state, or region. Consequently, they lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that often create misleading perceptions adversely affecting communities and their residents. Valid assessments are possible only with careful study and analysis of the range of unique conditions affecting each local law enforcement jurisdiction. The data user is, therefore, cautioned against comparing statistical data of individual reporting units from cities, metropolitan areas, states, or colleges or universities solely on the basis of their population coverage or student enrollment.

1. Why do you think this cautionary notice is given before users are directed to the FBI’s Crime in the United States publication? Expand on your viewpoint and find credible sources to support your rationale.

If you would like to visit the Web site, go to http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm#cius.

Go to http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm#cius, again. Scroll down to the section entitled, Hate Crime Statistics, and click on “Hate Crime Data Collection Guidelines and Training Manual.”

Evaluating financial statements and using financial analysis methods is a critical part of the decision to make capital investments

Evaluating financial statements and using financial analysis methods is a critical part of the decision to make capital investments. This helps an organization meet operating and expense obligations, while also keeping a sufficient cash flow. It is also a way to confirm that capital purchases and agreements are made with ethical standards. This part of your project will require you to complete two (2) article reviews and report on your findings. Then, you will apply your findings to how capital decisions can be made in your specific case; as well as comparing your viewpoint to the authors’ and recent ethical scandal. Keep in mind that you will use your article analysis to either support or disprove the purchase of an information system in the final portion of your project.

Create an innovation

Evaluate the internal processes or strategies within an organization in which you are involved, such as your workplace, school, church, or community group, in order to identify a problem that provides an opportunity for innovation. Then, determine an innovative solution for addressing that problem. Examples of potential solutions are entering a new market, implementing a new practice or process, or even changing management structures. The ultimate goal of your solution should be to increase the diffusion of innovation within the organization and contribute to a culture that appreciates innovation as a key to competitive advantage and organizational success.

Though your final paper will not be due until the end of the course, you should identify your problem and generate potential solutions early on. Begin drafting your implementation plan in stages as you work through the course topics. As with your CLC project, you should research and select a model for evaluating both the feasibility of your idea and the implementation plan.

Describe the problem your innovation targets. What is the scope of the problem and which stakeholders, both within the organization and without, does it impact?
Describe your innovation and explain how it addresses the problem. How will it meet the needs of the organization and all stakeholders involved?
How does the innovation contribute to the organization’s competitive advantage?
Develop an implementation plan for effectively diffusing the innovation within the organization. Make sure the plan addresses potential resistance and obstacles, including people and processes.
Identify an appropriate method that could be used for measuring the impact of the innovation on the organization. Explain why you think this is a relevant measure.
Finally, assume your innovation is adopted by the organization. Make recommendations for additional improvements within in this organization (in processes, practices, structures, etc.) that could create and sustain momentum for innovation.

The case of Yinscape and Yanngsearch

The case of Yinscape and Yanngsearch was designed to provide minimal information on this merger/acquisition. Re-read the case study and imagine the shape and spirit of a newly-merged, cross-national company. You are to assume the role of Yinscape’s CEO. In this role, you must envision a new future for the combined companies. Your thread must describe how you will communicate your vision as though you are addressing a meeting of Yinscape and Yangsearch’s top managers shortly after the acquisition. Creating a compelling vision is a task that requires forethought and sensitivity. In addition, the challenge is increased when you must communicate that vision to a potentially hostile audience. In preparing your thread, consider what questions and concerns you need to anticipate; think realistically about the possible results of the meeting, and decide on what steps to take immediately after the speech.
You will create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum.
