Evaluating theories is an important aspect of policymaking. Public management often involves policymaking through practical and applied organizational operations. While theory is important in public management, having an applied approach sometimes helps test the validity of specific theories. Therefore, evaluating public management theories is an essential element of leadership in the public sector.
As a manager and policymaker in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, prepare a written assessment of a management theory and illustrate your understanding of this theory by outlining its key components, including purpose, contributions, and effectiveness. Your assignment should include the following:
Define the theory and explain its purpose in public management.
Critique the effectiveness of the theory in daily operations.
Determine potential challenges associated with this theory and provide examples to support your findings.
Support your assignment with at least five scholarly resources. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including seminal articles, may be included.
The public sector relies on hundreds of thousands of workers across a multidisciplinary platform across the government. This includes working with inter-organizational entities and external entities, which sometimes include nongovernment entities. To maintain efficiency across the public sector, there is often a need for robust changes to optimize operations. Continuing in your role as a new employee within a public sector agency, explain the concept of leadership from the perspective of leading people and leading changes. Present your assignment as a video note. Ensure the following factors are presented in your submission:
Explain how an organization’s leadership approaches change management.
Identify the different approaches to employee engagement and involvement and explain how these approaches improve efficiency.
In employee recruitment and retention, one of the key goals is to maintain a diverse workforce. Please respond to the following questions about diversity of employees for an organization.
What does diversity mean in this context? What does a diverse workforce look like?
Why are organizations striving to attract a diverse group of employees? What do you see as the benefits?
What do you think are the best strategies for attracting and retaining a diverse workforce? For instance, technology companies tend to employ predominantly white male employees. How might such a company attract and retain more members of underrepresented groups (e.g., women, minorities)?
What issues could you see arising from a focus on diversity in hiring? How might you deal with them?
In the 1984 movie, The Burning Bed, Farah Fawcett plays Francine Hughes, a Michigan housewife who was prosecuted for murder after she set her husband on fire while he slept on their bed. The defense argued that Mrs. Hughes was a victim of 13 years of abuse, which had made her unable to think rationally and leave the relationship, a defense now popularly known as the ”battered woman’s syndrome (BWS).”
Based on the above scenario, answer the following questions:
In this context, explain the concept of the BWS, the arguments commonly made by the opposition, and the rationale for your arguments. Refer the Internet and give an example of a similar case study that you have come across. Analyze whether the victim in this case got justice. Was the offender convicted? Why? What was the uniqueness of this case?
What are the factors that compel a victim to stay in an abusive relationship? Is domestic abuse and violence common against men? Why?
Paul Johnson uses the life of daredevil Sam Patch to explain the social and economic changes of the Market revolution and early industrialization in America. Johnson writes “Sam Patch…was an angry and not particularly admirable victim of the huge social process that was creating places like Pawtucket and Paterson and granting money and respect to people like Timothy Crane” (435). What was the Market Revolution, and how does Sam Patch’s life reflect this social process? To conclude, explain whether or not you agree with Johnson’s assessment of that Patch was a victim and/or failure of Market Revolution (436).
Pick one of the following terms for your research: bounded rationality perspective, cognitive biases, decision learning, devil’s advocate, groupthink, incremental decision model, management science approach, non-programmed decisions, rational approach, or satisficing.
Journal Article Summary & Discussion: Within each module, there is a list of key terms. Each student will select one of the key terms and conduct a search of Campbellsville University’s online Library resources to find 1 recent peer reviewed article (within the past 3 years) that closely relate to the concept. Your submission must include the following information in the following format:
DEFINITION: a brief definition of the key term followed by the APA reference for the term; this does not count in the word requirement. SUMMARY: Summarize the article in your own words. Be sure to note the article’s author, note their credentials and why we should put any weight behind his/her opinions, research or findings regarding the key term.
DISCUSSION: write a brief discussion, in your own words of how the article relates to the selected chapter Key Term. A discussion is not rehashing what was already stated in the article, but the opportunity for you to add value by sharing your experiences, thoughts and opinions. This is the most important part of the assignment.
REFERENCES: All references must be listed at the bottom of the submission–in APA format.
SQA in systems development is a set of processes that ensure the delivered systems meet the pre-defined expectations. Note that SQA is not just testing.
The director of software engineering needs your help assisting the team in using the appropriate SQA processes. The director wants you to send out an email to the team titled “Software Quality Assurance: Processes and Tools” to ensure quality results.
Write a 1-page email using Microsoft® Word in which you do the following:
Explain how the software development process can benefit from SQA; what specific activities will be used to support quality development.
Provide an example of what happens when SQA policies are not followed.
A concise design document is incredibly important to designing a game efficiently. Full design documentation may prove to be quite expansive, covering every aspect of the game’s design from characters to specific missions. However, it is very easy to lose sight of the core design of a game as additional documents are added. For this reason, having a core design document that is used as a reference for all other aspects of design helps focus the task considerably. A core document generally shouldn’t need to be any longer than 2 pages at most and will consist of a fairly standard set of components. Not all games will allow or require all of the following sections but most of the time it helps to consider all of them at least once. Furthermore, additional sections can be added as necessary to capture the essence of the design. This format is equally useful for digital and analog games. Common sections include:
• Name
o Start with a name if you can think of one. For some games the title is easy to establish while others it might not be apparent until after it’s nearly finished.
• Vision
o The first main section is possibly the most important. Use 1 or 2 sentences to describe the core reason for the game. Be specific and concise. This vision serves as the main test for any new addition to the game. If a new addition doesn’t enhance the vision, is that addition worth adding? If it’s worth adding, do you need to re-evaluate your vision?
• High-Level
o This section is usually a bullet-pointed list of simple aspects of the game experience. How many players will it support? What platforms? What components will be used? What’s the core play loop?
• Baseline Story
o If your game has a narrative or aesthetic, this is the place to establish it. Be as specific as you like, but a basic skeleton of the plot should be established at least. This helps guide the process by giving major story beats that can be tied together as the game goes on.
• Gameplay
o This is usually a bulleted list of the specific mechanics or flow of the game that you intend to use to capture the high-level section and support the vision. What would the perspective be? What kind of puzzles are you using? What is your randomization component if any?
• Visuals
o What will your game look like? This section can benefit from very simple diagrams and pictures depicting what the game would look like or how the UI would be laid out.
• Touchstones
o Bulleted list of media that lead to you designing this. What has inspired you for this design? What are games you could point to with some similar aspect? What movies or TV shows did you draw upon?
1. Teams are an increasingly popular method of organizing corporations, but not all people are suited for teamwork. As a manager, what do you do with employees who are talented but unapproachable? Can you think of a way to involve people who are uncomfortable in team settings so that your teams have the perspective of these employees as well?
2. Think of a task or project you have completed recently that required a great deal of effort. What motivated you to exert so much energy to complete the task or project? Describe your motivation in terms of theories presented in the chapter.
