MANAGEMENT ANALYSIS IN HUMAN SERVICES

Select a specific organization and review, critically analyze and examine the structure of the nonprofit organization and of its human resources department. Is it positioned to be a strategic partner? Describe the structure and comment on what you believe are its challenges and strengths. Research should be gathered from available interviews (podcasts, etc), organizational publications, and/or other published material.

Please cite every source used. In-text citations for every source mentioned is a MUST, and I’ve been noticing a lot of writers on here fail at this aspect.

SHELBY COUNTY V. HOLDER

In the landmark case, Shelby County V. Holder (2013), the US Supreme Court struck down major provisions of the 1965 Voting Rights Act relating to the procedure of “pre-clearance.” Since the ruling, states like Texas, Georgia and North Carolina, can now make changes to their voting laws, such as photo ID requirements, that do not need to be pre-approved by the federal government. Supporters of this ruling say the pre-clearance rules are no longer needed and besides, states need new laws to protect against voter fraud. Opponents say that these laws are just a new form of voter suppression tactics that hit the poor and racial minorities hardest. Based on this, your paper must meet the following content, format and submission requirements:

CONTENT REQUIREMENTS:

Describe the provisions (parts) of the Voting Rights Act that discuss the issue of “pre-clearance”.
Compare and contrast the views of those who think the federal government should have the power of “pre-clearance” and those who do not. Include at least three points of comparison.
Using evidence from any election in 2014 or later, argue whether or not you believe the federal government should have the power of “pre-clearance” relating to election laws. Include at least three reasons and/or examples to make your point.
List at least two things you could do in order to engage in the political process in pursuit of your position in (3) above.
Cite at least three (3) reliable, quality references within the body of the paper using the Chicago Manual of Style’s (Links to an external site.)

Database for Life: The Best Database-as-a-Service Solutions for 2020

Database for Life: The Best Database-as-a-Service Solutions for 2020

Read and reflect on the article . Also, read the full review for each database.

While reading the article and full reviews think about the pros and cons of the different databases, interfaces, ease of use, toolbox and the services each one provides. Which database would you select for a mid-size business and why? What would be your second choice and why? For each choice take into account the pros, cons, ease of use, toolbox, services that are provided and pricing model. What are the competitors of each and what reason would you chose the one you did over the competition? Be specific in your answers.

READ THE BOOK “THE BEST WE COULD DO”. THEN ANSWER THE DISCUSSION PROMPTS.

Please Respond to BOTH PROMPTS. Be sure to quote the text, name the author, and cite the page number(s) in your responses
1. The births of the six siblings are told in reverse chronological order (pp. 42, 46, 47, 48, 50, and 52). What was the authors purpose in doing this? Is it effective?
2. Page 66 refers to Californias Proposition 187, which voters passed in 1994 but was subsequently struck down in a federal court. What were the arguments for and against this law? What similarities do you see to debates today on immigration? YOU NEED TO DO SOME RESEARCH TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION EFFECTIVELY! Be sure to quote both your research and Thi Bui.

CORRESPONDENCE ASSIGNMENT

After reading the assigned chapters and lecture notes, write responses to all three cases below.
Case 1: (This case is adapted from UHVs 2006 Final Exam) You are the president of Victoria Media, a local media production company. To attract the best employees possible, the company has always contributed 7% of each workers monthly gross pay to a retirement plan. The employees themselves could also contribute up to 8% of their pay to the plan. But because of
rising health insurance costs, your board of directors has decided to reduce the company’s
contribution to the retirement plan by 3%. Beginning on January 1 the company will only be putting in 4% of the employees gross pay.
Under the new system, employees will have the option of contributing up to 11% of their pay to the fund (so that the total contribution in theory could still equal 15%). In addition, although the retirement contribution will be reduced, the health insurance program will remain unchanged even though the costs to the company are rising.
Write a memo to all employees of Victoria Media telling them of these changes.
Case 2: You are the owner and director of a successful daycare center. Grandmas House started with 6 students and has grown to a capacity of 65 children. The reputation of your center is so high that there is a waiting list of 78 children, and parents are beginning to register their children before they are even born. As the director and owner of the center, you are now faced with a problem you have never before encountered in your 8 years of running the center. You must expel a child from the center, and it is your responsibility to write a letter to the parents explaining the reasons and your position. You need to write a letter to Mr. and Mrs. Brady telling them that their four-year old son Brett is being expelled from Grandmas House. Brett entered your center two months ago and things haven’t been the same since! The child is not able to get along with other children. In his two months at Grandmas House, he has bitten six children (causing one child to get stitches); kicked a teacher; and scratched, hit, and pulled hair on a regular basis. The child’s vocabulary is an education, even for the adults. Seven other
parents have threatened to pull their children out of the center if Brett does not leave. You have had several conferences with Brett’s parents, an influential couple who are active in the community and who seem like reasonable people, but no changes have been seen in his behavior.
In the last conference, you indicated that Brett might be dropped from the school if his behavior did not change. Write the letter to the Brady’s, remembering the pointers for writing bad news suggested in the text. Remember, too, that Brett is the Brady’s only child, so choose your words
carefully.
Case 3 (This case is adapted from UHVs 2007 Final Exam) Assume you are the principal of Kennedy Elementary School. The most recent state-run student achievement test scores for your fourth graders have just arrived. While they did well in reading and writing, they had difficulty in math and science. Only 64% of them passed the math portion of the exam, and only 58% passed
the science portion. If the passing rates for both portions of the exam do not exceed 65% by next years administration of the test, your school will be put on probation.
To address this issue, you have decided to provide a half-hour more instruction in math and science per day for your current third graders (next years test-taking fourth graders). The half hour will result from cutting their lunch periods and physical activity periods by fifteen minutes per day each. To staff this extra class time, you are asking all of your faculty members to voluntarily cut their lunch periods by half an hour and assist in the third grade classrooms during that time.
Write an email to the faculty of Kennedy Elementary School explaining the situation and asking them to cut their lunch periods so they can help the third graders master math and science.
The cases may include information that you do not want to include in your response.
Additionally, you might need to create pertinent, realistic, and relevant information to accomplish your purpose effectively. Make sure you follow a structure and format appropriate to the situation and give the audience all the information they may need.

DISCUSSION POST: IN CUBA I WAS A GERMAN SHEPHERD

Pick your favorite story from Ana Menendez’s short story collection In Cuba I Was a German Shepherd. Please discuss why this is your favorite. Name and describe the main protagonist in the story and his/her/their motivation that propels the forward motion of the plot. Discuss Menendez’s writing style, use of poetic or symbolic language, phrases, cultural symbols, metaphors and images that stayed with you after reading the story. Do you connect personally or culturally with the theme, characterization and/or context of this narrative? What is the point of connection for you? How is the conflict in the story resolved and what do you think of the ending?

BRINGING ABOUT STRATEGIC CHANGE IN A COMPANY

Requirements:

You should be able to complete this assignment in eight to 10 pages, double-spaced.
Submit your paper using a real company. Apply Kotter’s model to a real organization and define the problem and what triggered the change. You need to address all the questions in the assignment. You can use a change effort at a company of your choosing but I won’t accept a made-up company or situation. I want you to submit the exact citations regarding where you got the information about the company and the change effort. There is no need to include any irrelevant material outside of material attached from class information.

Assignment:

In the final paper, you are to apply what you have learned about strategic change to a change effort in your organization. The change effort can be one that you want to make in the future, one that is currently taking place in the organization, or one that was attempted in the past but was unsuccessful.

The content of your final paper will vary depending on whether you are using a future, current, or past change effort.

Future change: What needs to occur at each step to make sure the change is successful? What is the plan?
Current change: Where are you in the change process? What has gone right/wrong at each step? What needs to be done to make sure the change effort succeeds?
Past change: Where did the change effort fail and why? What would you have done differently at each step in the model?

Be sure to address the following.

Background

Briefly describe the organization.
Describe in some depth what the change effort entails.
State up front whether the change you are going to present is a past change, current change, or future change effort.
Problem Definition

What is/was the current situation?
What is/was the desired outcome once the change is/was in place?
What triggered the change?

Change Process

Using Kotter’s model, describe all eight steps in the change process as they apply to the change effort you identified above.

For each step in the model:

Describe the step briefly.
Describe what should/did/didn’t occur.
Describe who should be/was/wasn’t involved.
Describe what the results should be/were for the step.
Describe what will need to be done to make sure the change effort is successful.
If this was a past change effort, what should be done next time to make sure it does not fail?

If this is a current change effort, what do you need to do to get the change effort back on track?

If this is a future change effort, what would be the most important thing you need to do to ensure success?
