Besides biotechnology, identify one technology that seems to have the greatest potential positive effect on food security

Assignment 7

how technological advancements and changes may affect how we can work to find solutions for the global threats discussed so far. Technological advances can and do affect development in positive and negative ways.

Besides biotechnology, identify one technology that seems to have the greatest potential positive effect on food security. Discuss any potential negative uses of that technology. Do the benefits of these technologies outweigh the potential negative consequences they have on food security? Why or why not?
Assignment 8

As addressed in the readings, technology has the potential to both solve global social problems and make them worse. For example, technological devices that can interact with the environment have the potential to reduce world hunger by helping to increase food production in developing countries. However, some technological advancements—such as weapons of war and automated assembly lines—can threaten life through armed conflict, pollution of the environment, and increased poverty through eliminated jobs.

Do advancements in technology pose any direct and/or indirect threats to the global environment? Choose one advancement and provide two examples of direct or indirect threats in your explanation.

JMD Oils: Deciding on a Growth Strategy

Case Synopsis: The director of JMD Oils, an edible oils firm, is considering the strategic options to drive his company to the next level of sales and profitability. The business has been showing a steady performance, but he feels that it could improve substantially. To increase profits, the director could increase sales volumes or increase gross margins. An increase in volume could be achieved by increasing the geographical footprint, which would require setting up additional factories. Increasing the margins would require a shift from a dealer push strategy to a consumer pull strategy, which could be achieved by brand building. The director needs to estimate returns from brand building and geographical expansion. The financial risks for each are different and the implementation challenges complicate the decision.

Are non-lethal home defense weapons effective compared to lethal home defense weapons?

Untapped Market for Home Security Products Introduction
Through extensive research and a worked-out hypothesis, I have discovered a new untapped market for home security appliances. The marketing department has extensively considered all the variables for pioneering into this new market. With home invasions on the rise, there is a huge market for home security products. Further, there are many additional threats to home security, prompting more people to consider home security seriously. Our market research reveals that home security will be a significant market in the foreseeable future. While home security appliances have existed for a long time, we intend to offer advanced and efficient products that are easy to use.
The marketing team has been actively involved at the customer front lines. Listening to potential customers has given us great insight into their needs. These customers want us to tackle their pain points concerning home invasions and other threats to home security. Several products are categorized under the umbrella of home security. The home security market is huge as it includes several sub-niches that we can focus on. Our hypothesis projects the success of products that deter package theft. The increased dependence on online stores for shopping has led to spikes in package theft. To solve this problem, the marketing team contemplates developing products that can prevent thieves from stealing packages.
Market research reveals that non-lethal home defense weapons promise high sales volumes. While everyone may prefer to feel secure and safe in their homes, many consumers still dislike the idea of having deadly weapons in their houses. Therefore, we intend to develop non-lethal weapons that protect consumers without the dangers associated with possessing firearms and other deadly weapons.

Three most Important Questions to be Answered
• Are non-lethal home defense weapons effective compared to lethal home defense weapons?
• Will non-lethal home defense weapons deter home invasions and other threats to home security?
• Is it worthy of investing in non-lethal home defense weapons in terms of cost and efficiency of use? The answers will be used to determine whether there is a need for venturing in the production and selling of non-lethal home defense weapons.

Write a scientific response in the form of a position paper addressing one of the following questions/issues

Write a scientific response in the form of a position paper addressing one of the following questions/issues. A 2500 absolute maximum word limit applies for Undergraduates, and 3500 absolute maximum for Postgraduates. Bibliography, appendices, figures and tables in the text can be in addition to the word limits, and are very much encouraged (and will be read) but the emphasis is on a concise, clear and well-structured paper such as might be given as a briefing to a minister in a government. You should adequately reference all material and your response could include tables, figures, sub-headings, point summaries etc. Papers will be assessed with respect to the following three categories:
• strength and coherence of argument addressing the question;
• content, research and references;
• clarity of expression and quality of writing style.
Papers with excessive use of unsubstantiated content (eg. non peer-reviewed material, corporate material and low-quality Internet sources) will not be marked favourably. You must include detailed references – the referencing format chosen is not important (you could use footnotes, endnotes, numbers
[1], or Author (year)). Strong and well-structured arguments will be viewed as more important than a mere collection of available material on a topic, or such things as statements of the importance of climate change and just general background material.
The submitted file should have 25 mm margins all round, should have pages numbered, and a font size of no less than 12 (footnotes excluded). Title page is to have a word count indicated.

Topics:
If you choose Australian examples, ensure that you cite relevant energy policies and guidelines within Australia.
1. For the national industry minister, evaluate the potential of demand management (DM) measures in reducing the need for new electricity generation infrastructure in a country of your choice. Further, discuss the viability of this practice in economic, environmental and social terms.
What contribution could DM make to both emissions reduction, better peak capacity management and electricity price reductions?
2. For the NSW, Victorian or Queensland state governments, discuss the socio-economic, political and environmental implications of their inexpensive supply of electricity generated from coal.
Should current coal fired power stations be closed before they reach the end of their useful life? And if so, under what conditions?
3. Critically examine the requirements for the Australian electricity grid if Australia wants to meet its Paris Agreement pledges. Include, among other aspects, how much electricity must be produced from renewable technologies in 2035 and whether this is an ambitious goal. Would achieving this goal pose a problem for the Australian grid? Or is maybe the opposite the case
and the not achieving this target would present a problem?
4. Critically discuss how a renewable energy technology of your choice can make a significant contribution to the energy mix in a country of your choice within the next 20 years. Include references to social, environmental and economic aspects of the technology. Specifically address the ability of the technology to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a cost-effective way.
5. Distributed or embedded generation has been promoted as being more efficient than traditional, large centralised electricity generation. As a submission to a review of energy policy in a country of your choice, discuss this “efficiency” argument in economic, social, strategic, and environmental terms. Does distributed generation make good sense?
6. Compare energy use from buildings in Australia to a country of your choice. Are Australian houses energy efficient (hint: no)? To what extend can energy and hence emissions be reduced if different building standards were adopted. What are the cost implications of such adoptions, and what is the potential for energy savings for the duration of a building (assume a lifetime of 70 years for a building).
7. Describe and critically review the issues surrounding the exploitation of either an unconventional natural gas source or an unconventional oil resource in a country of your choice.
Address social, economic and environmental aspects. Include references to national energy policy and a global energy context.
