What is one instance where you have seen correlation misinterpreted as causation? Please describe.

Correlation and Linear Regression
Please answer one of the two following questions:1. Correlation: Correlation Does Not Mean Causation
One of the major misconceptions about correlation is that a relationship between two variables means causation; that is, one variable causes changes in the other variable. There is a particular tendency to make this causal error, when the two variables seem to be related to each other. What is one instance where you have seen correlation misinterpreted as causation? Please describe.
OR2. Linear Regression
Linear regression is used to predict the value of one variable from another variable. Since it is based on correlation, it cannot provide causation. In addition, the strength of the relationship between the two variables affects the ability to predict one variable from the other variable; that is, the stronger the relationship between the two variables, the better the ability to do prediction. What is one instance where you think linear regression would be useful to you in your workplace or chosen major? Please describe including why and how it would be used.

Identify two scholarly resources that present the theoretical grounds of policy implementation and write a short description of the content presented in the papers in 4-5 sentences.

Discussion:Chapter 17 introduced some challenges to policymaking in developing countries. If you were an analyst working for the St. Petersburg Informational and Analytical Center, explain how you would use data available to you to prepare a report for the Governor for the State Program “Combating Proliferation of Drugs.” Briefly explain what you would include in your report to detail the problem, and what the forecast results would be for each of several responses to the problem. (You do not have to use actual data from a real model for this discussion.) The idea is to focus on how models can use real data to create forecasts. To complete this assignment, you must do the following:A) Create a new thread. As indicated above, assume you are an analyst working for the St. Petersburg Informational and Analytical Center. Explain how you would use data available to you to prepare a report for the Governor for the State Program “Combating Proliferation of Drugs.” Briefly explain what you would include in your report to detail the problem, and what the forecast results would be for each of several responses to the problem. (You do not have to use actual data from a real model for this discussion.) The idea is to focus on how models can use real data to create forecasts. B) Select AT LEAST 3 other students’ threads and post substantive comments on those threads, evaluating the pros and cons of that student’s recommendations. Your comments should extend the conversation started with the thread.

Essay #2: Literary Analysis/Critique of a Scholarly Source

This essay will focus on the element of persuasion via the lens of analyzing and critiquing a text. Length is a minimum of 4 full pages or 5 pages typed double-spaced (see syllabus).  You must use MLA format and parenthetical in-text citation (quotes, paraphrases and summary to support your assertions about the text). Additionally, this paper will focus on conducting research to obtain the scholarly source on an arguable topic, as well as employing C.R.A., wherein you will have to summarize, analyze, and evaluate the scholarly source.

You will find a scholarly source (ideally a journal article of at least 5 pages) that is related to an argumentative topic that is worthy of research (remember this can be a source also for your larger research paper). The literary work must be approved.

Page 1-2: A brief summary to establish the context for your analysis, which should address the background of the work (biographical sketch of the author, historical or current relevance to society, and the purpose of the work or why it was written).

Page 2-3: Your thesis/argument will address your assertions on the theme of the work (i.e. its purpose), and to that end, discuss how structure (patterns of development/organization), point of view (author’s perspective), tone (author’s voice/attitude), and word choice/language affects the meaning of the text. A discussion of the text’s supporting details and examples is appropriate.

Page 4-5: Analysis and Evaluation/Critique will be your discussion of whether the argument is effective why or why not, whether the conflict, the main issue/claim/position, or the central idea is realistic or unrealistic and whether it is resolved. Why or why not? Explain what you think would be a better way to make the argument, as well as if there’s an alternative solution referring back to theme, words, structure or any other examples of persuasive strategies and argumentative techniques in the text to support your answers.

Page 5 or 6: Work(s) Cited Page will be where you list the source(s) you used to support your assertions (these are all summaries, paraphrases and quotes/in- text citations from the text and/ or any additional sources included in your paper). If you meet the minimum requirement of 4 full pages, then page 5 would be your Work(s) Cited Page. All papers will have a minimum of one source listed on this page because it will be the assigned text you just used for your analysis. If you had to look for background information outside of your assigned text, then you must list those additional sources on the Works Cited Page.

Remember, regard the material in the work you have read as evidence to support your argument. Demonstrate that the details you reference are relevant to the main point of your argument. Use MLA format for citations. Make your statements and conclusion, clear and convincing. Use handouts and texts (ARG, WRP, TSIS, and Course Resources or Purdue OWL) for additional help.

Can you think of any rules that should be in place for who is allowed to perform executions? Discuss your views in at least a paragraph.

For this weekly check-in, let’s think about the role of the executioner in the death penalty debate. Some believe this is the sort of job that can cause permanent psychological damage or at the very least, is a struggle in the lives of those who do it. To read about this view, check out this article from pulitzer.org: Here, you will see that Morris L. Thigpen, who runs a jail in Alabama, says he has never seen anyone participate in an execution then say that he would like to do that again. However, research reveals that executioners both past and present appear to rarely feel that way about it. Some, such as Sam Jones and Jimmy Thompson, may cause you to wonder what the line truly is between murder and execution. You can learn about them here: An Executioner Explains What It’s Like to Legally Kill People For your original post, choose one of the executioners you learned about here and tell the class a little about him. What is your reaction to this particular executioner? Do you believe that what he is doing is significantly different from murder? Why or why not? Can you think of any rules that should be in place for who is allowed to perform executions? Discuss your views in at least a paragraph. After doing so, be sure to post your replies to two classmates explaining whether you agree with their views, if they helped you think of something in a new way, etc.

Introduction to Philosophy:The Examined Life

Term Paper

Write an essay of about  2000-2500  words on one of the following topics. Try to explain clearly the views and arguments you discuss and your own view of the topic. You should also try to identify the greatest weaknesses of views and arguments you discuss, and whether you think they can be replied to.

Be selective. In the space available you will not be able to discuss every aspect of the topic! Select and focus on just a few of the points or issues you think the most central or interesting. Work hard on expressing points clearly in your own words. Try always to make it clear to the reader which of the views discussed are merely mentioned for the sake of the discussion and which, if any of them, you wish to endorse.

Essays should  be typed double-spaced, with wide margins. Any standard format is acceptable (APA, MLA, Chicago). Your essay must be researched; two external sources are mandatory. Always keep a copy of an essay you submit. Make sure your name is clearly marked on the essay.

The final version of the paper must be based on an earlier draft. Drafts may not be extensive or detailed; however, they are supposed to provide an outline of your argument to be developed in the final version of your essay.

The Imperfection Argument (74-76) offers Plato’s solution to the problems of the origin of our knowledge of ideas and their identification in the objects of sensory experience. Discuss and critque it, pointing both to the argument’s problems – if you see any – and to its consequences for metaphysics and epistemology. Do you believe Plato’s solution is the only possible or at least most likely true, or rather some other answers are available as well and perhaps more convincing? Justify your position.

  1. Descartes hails as a great victory over the “Evil Demon” the claim that despite every doubt, he cannot be deceived in thinking that he exists. Just what, in particular, does he really have the right to know, based on that claim? Discuss the consequences of Descartes’ argument in the context of his Meditations and overall philosophical project.
The effect of intensive agriculture and management practices on UK lowland peatlands with alternative solutions

UK lowland peatlands have been extensively drained for agriculture beginning in the 18th Century. Peat is a soil that is high in carbon that has accumulated over hundreds to thousands of years under flooded, low oxygen conditions. Intact peatlands can have peat that is several metres deep. However, drainage results in conditions that drive rapid decomposition, adding to UK greenhouse gas emissions, and placing many peatland areas several metres below sea level. The England Peat Action Plan highlights the importance of preserving remaining peatlands and increasing their climate resilience. To achieve this, there is a need to understand how deep the remaining peat is, and how much peat carbon remains.

Please write about the effects of intensive agriculture and farming practices on the peat loss in the UK lowland peatlands focusing on the Great Fen area. Please look into field drainage, and type of farming (cereals, general cropping, horticulture, dairy, grazing livestock). Also look into type work done on the fields (Ploughing, minimum tillage, no tillage and rotations).

The main part should be:

1. Identify common management practices that have driven peat loss, and alternative practices that may reduce ongoing decomposition, and increase climate resilience.

2. Conduct a systematic literature review, identifying alternative management practices that can help reduce rates of peat wastage in land still under arable agriculture across the region, based on the globally available literature. Look into paludiculture and wet farming and other viable solutions.

3. Identify potential methods for testing impacts of land use/management intensity/restoration date on peat depth.

Please use the literature provided and any other literature you can find that is relevant. If you did not have access to some of the literature let me know and maybe I can have access through my university. Please use as many resources as you want. It does not have to be exactly 25, the more the better but it can also be a bit less.

Discuss the training and development activities that you will use to build trust and productivity in the group once they start working together.

As teams progress, they pass through stages of development. You understand that being prepared with tools and techniques at each stage is important. There is a team forming that will take on a production line. You want to be ready to provide training and development resources for this team as soon as they start working together.
You research various team-development models and pick one model that you will use to determine team-building activities before the team members start working together. Develop a plan that addresses the following:

What will you do to prepare the team for working together before they start?
Discuss the training and development activities that you will use to build trust and productivity in the group once they start working together.
How will you measure whether trust exists within the team?
How will you measure the effectiveness of this new team in each of the early stages of 3, 6, and 9 months of them working together?
