After reading Ralph Waldo Emerson’s The American Scholar answer the following prompts:

1) Ethics is the study of “the good life”. Identify what Emerson believes is the role of academia (colleges and universities). How does he define the “American Scholar”? (This should be at least a paragraph in length.)

2) What is the importance of what you identified in your first paragraph to society and college students? What type of ethics (Utilitarianism, Deontology, or Virtue) does Emerson seems to be using to reach his conclusion. Be sure to explain your answer and cite examples from The American Scholar.
