Compare the demographics of two countries, one less developed and one more developed.
Two countries. You must use the two countries you have been using for the two assignments unless you were told to select a different country. One of your countries must be a less developed country and one of your countries must be a more developed country. You cannot use the United States as your more developed country.
2. Compare the demographics of two countries. Answer the following questions below and then compare how the countries are similar or different. You can use information you collected in Assignment 1 and Assignment 2 to answer the questions.
a. Compare the populations of the two countries. What is the current population of each country? How have the populations changed over time? What are the current rates of growth? What are the projected populations in 2050? Do the political philosophies of your countries come closest to Malthus, Marx, or someone else we covered in the course?
b. Compare the mortality rates in each country. What are the life expectancies for males and females in each country? Are the causes of death from communicable or noncommunicable diseases? How have mortality rates changed over time?
c. Compare the fertility rates of each country. What are the total fertility rates in each country? How have fertility rates changed over time? Are the current fertility rates above or below replacement level?
d. Compare migration in each country. What are the net migration rates? What are the patterns of international migration (from or to other countries)? What migration theory explains why people are migrating to or from your countries?
e. Compare urbanization in each country. What are the populations of the largest cities in each country? Is there evidence of the urban evolution that accompanies the urban transition (urban crowding, slums, suburbanization, residential segregation, gentrification) in each country?
f. Compare the age-sex structure of each country. Find a recent population pyramid for each of your countries (include the population pyramid at the end of your paper). Describe the recent population pyramid of each country. How are they similar or different? What is the current dependency ratio for each country?
g. Compare families and unions in each country. How have marriage rates changed over time? What is the average household size?
h. Projected demographic challenges for each country. What are the projected demographic challenges each country will face? Are they similar or different?
i. Is there evidence of the second demographic transition in each country? Explain if each country has experienced the second demographic transition. Explain how you know this.
