Should “Buy Better, Buy Less” be our new shopping mantra?
– Does Vivienne Westwood’s call to “Buy Better, Buy Less”, offer the fashion consumer a practical solution to sustainable growth?
(Its actually doesn’t)
– All economies are sustained by the aim of ‘growth’
– We are learning how to sell ‘more’ for brands
– Economies of scale – the bigger it gets the cheaper
– What makes fast fashion cheaper?
Low wages
Less regulation
Transport miles
– The future of the planet is in the hands of the consumer
– Buy less and save the planet?
– No government will let it happen => unemployment
We can’t ‘buy’ our way out of climate change
– Western nations caused most of the damage
– Post colonial studies
– Orientalism by Edward Said
– If we stop buying from Vietnam whats gonna happen to them
HEADINGS:
1. Does the consumer have any responsibility?
2. What effect would it have on the global fashion industry if the western nations started to produce clothing exclusively at home? (Things should be local? Example food KM Zero)
3. Considering the post colonial situation to the western nations owe any consideration to the fashion production hubs in developing nations?
