How has social media activism shaped the growth of the movement, and is it potential for change?

#Me Too Movement- Tarana Burke
Pertinent to the unit’s project, I chose to focus on the #Metoo social movement which emerged in 2006 but trended more from 2013 to 2018. The #Metoo movement was driven by the exposure of rampant sexual abuse incidences that had rocked different workspaces and ideally intended to break the silence and empower sexually assaulted victims through solidarity, empathy as well as the strength in numbers to publicize the rampant evil deeds, and showcase sexual assault to be a monster that still exists in the present-day workplace (Lee, 2018).
When breaking down the movement, the project will focus on Tarana Burke who was its founder (Tippett, 2018), with an aim of assessing the impact that she has had in the fight against sexual assault. Complimentary to this, the three issues that I will develop in the presentation are, origins of the #me too movement, how has social media activism shaped the growth of the movement, and is it potential for change? To begin with, the origins of the #me too movement will seek to ascertain the fundamental purpose of the social movement and its founding members/premise. Secondly, the social media activism element will seek to determine how social media has transformed the manner in which social activism is conducted in the 21st century, with an aim of identifying its outreach and impact. The final segment will assess if there is any tangible change with regards to sexual assault statistics that can be credited to the identified social movement.

What trade-offs is Paul trying to make?

Paul Lambert was in a difficult situation. When he started his current job 5 years ago, he understood clearly that he would be working on sensitive defense contracts for the government. In fact, his firm was a subcontractor for some major defense contractors. What he did not realize at the time— indeed, he only discovered this gradually over the past 2 years—was that the firm was overcharging. And it was not just a matter of a few dollars. In some cases, the government was overcharged by as much as a factor of 10.Three weeks ago, he inadvertently came across an internal accounting memo that documented one particularly flagrant violation. He quietly made a copy and locked it in his desk. At the time, he was amazed, then righteously indignant. He resolved to take the evidence immediately to the appropriate authorities. But the more he thought about it, the more confused he became. Finally, he called his brother-in-law, Jim Grillich. Jim worked for another defense-related firm and agreed to have lunch with Paul. After exchanging stories about their families and comments on recent sporting events, Paul laid his cards on the table. “Looks as though you could really make some waves,” Jim commented, after listening to Paul’s story. “I guess I could. But I just don’t know. If I blow the whistle, I’d feel like I’d have to resign. And then it would be tough to find another job. Nancy and I don’t have a lot of savings, you know.” The thought of dipping into their savings made Paul shake his head. “I just don’t know. ”The two men were silent for a long time. Then Paul continued, “To make matters worse, I really believe that the work that the company is doing, especially in the research labs, is important. It may have a substantial impact on our society over the next 20 years. The CEO is behind the research 100 percent, and I gather from the few comments I’ve overheard that he’s essentially funding the research by overcharging on the subcontracts. So if I call foul, the research program goes down the drain.” “I know what you mean.” Jim went on to recount a similar dilemma that he faced a few years before. “So what did you do?” “The papers are still in my desk. I always wanted to talk to someone about it. I even thought about calling you up, but I never did. After a while, it seemed like it was pretty easy just to leave the papers in there, locked up, safe and sound.”Questions1. What trade-offs is Paul trying to make? What appear to be his fundamental objectives?2. Suppose that Paul’s take-home pay is currently $5,000 per month. In talking to an employment company, he is told that it will probably take two months to find a similar job if he leaves his current one, and he had better expect 3 months if he wants a better job. In looking at his savings account of $25,000, he decides that he cannot justify leaving his job, even though this means keeping quiet about the overcharging incident. Can you say anything about an implicit trade-off rate between the fundamental objectives that you identified previously?3. Have you ever been in a situation in which it was difficult for you to decide whether to take an ethically appropriate action? Describe the situation. What made the decision difficult? What trade-offs did you have to make? What did you finally do?

Research Topic:

To Investigate How the Rise of Social Media Use May Potentially Affect the Risk of Unrealistic Beauty Standards and Body Image Issues in Both Female and Male Malaysian Young Adults

The assignment for Dissertation: Research Project Chapter 1 is the first chapter that should be considered in thoroughly understanding the given research dissertation topic of interest.

The given research topic is entirely based from a Malaysian context. The given research topic only focuses on young adults (female and male) within a Malaysian population.

The construction and format of Chapter 1 must all be based from the attached research proposal.

The attached research proposal significantly will guide and help you with writing the whole of Chapter 1: Problem and Its Background.

I have completed the research proposal of the Dissertation/Research Project topic. It is important to always follow the proposal and write Chapter 1 according to what the proposal states.

Please take the time to carefully and cautiously read the research proposal in order to fully understand the research project and in writing Chapter 1.

You may use the content and information from the research proposal into Chapter 1 so that the research project flows and links together.

As a way to help you structure Chapter 1: Problem and Its Background, these are the main specific subheadings that you must have within Chapter 1:

1. Introduction:

• This part presents the background information about the problem and the pressing situations that prompted the researcher to work on the topic.
• The introduction needs to fully support the researcher’s intention to study the chosen topic.

2. Statement of the Problem:

• This part presents the general (major) problem stated in declarative form.
• This usually bears the title of your thesis.
• Under the general problem are the research questions stated in question forms.
• These research questions must lead to the same direction – to answer the general problem.

3. Objectives of the Study:

• The intent of the research expressed through the formulation of objectives which are the breakdown of the research problem, stated in the infinitive TO + (action words in research) such as examine, analyse, determine, measure, assess, evaluate, recommend, find out, among others; setting 2-3 research objectives is ideal for a research problem.

4. Framework of the Study (Two Parts):

• Theoretical Framework makes use of a theory or theories in explaining why a certain phenomenon, the subject of the study occurred.
– Basically, a theory is a set of concepts and their relations which explains, predicts, and interprets how a particular phenomenon exists and operates.

• Conceptual Framework has the same function as the theoretical framework. The difference lies in the types of concepts which they use.
– While the theoretical framework makes use of abstract concepts, the conceptual framework utilises and explores specific themes or issues well-related to the research problem.

5. Assumption:

• It is an educated or intelligent guess or prediction about the existence, attribute, or relationship between variables (characteristics or phenomena) covered by a study. It will be either supported, rejected or needs further exploration.
6. Significance of the Study:

• The significant contributions of the research to various sectors/groups for which the research is intended.

7. Scope and Delimitation of the Study:

• The scope discusses the parameters of the study (of what is going to be covered by the research); while delimitation presents the weaknesses of the study.

8. Definition of Terms:

• The operational definition of terms must be used – terms are defined in the context of the study.
• Only terms that are important must be defined to provide better understanding of the work at hand.
• Terms defined must be arranged in alphabetical order. Synonymous definition of terms should not be used.
